UK - Football and art, though often seemingly worlds apart, share a deep connection – evoking human expression and emotion. Artist Ryan Gander sought to explore how the integration of technology could combine art and football to create a playful exhibition at this year’s Manchester International Festival (MIF).

Collaborating with Naostage, Gander was one of six artists to work with football stars – including Manchester United’s Eric Cantona, Lioness Ella Toone, and Edgar Davids – to create Football City, Art United, an interactive group exhibition conceived by World Cup and Champions League winner Juan Mata.

Using Naostage’s K System, Privileges of Hindsight 2025 allowed a spotlight to dynamically track visitors throughout the gallery, creating an interactive, ever-changing experience. This gave visitors the a

Strike Preparations - Actors’ Equity Association in the US is to continue with "strike preparations" in New York, after the union and the Broadway League failed to reach an agreement following two days of mediation. The union and trade association the Broadway League have been in negotiations since August over the production contract, which contains the terms of employment for stage managers and actors on Broadway. The last three-year contract ended on 28 September.

A central issue of the negotiations is healthcare and the Broadway League’s financial contribution to the union’s healthcare fund. AEA is asking Broadway League to "pivot toward humane scheduling, including providing paid time off", to pay its "fair share toward our health insurance" and to "reasonably and safely staff our workplaces to foster safety and prevent emergencies".

USA - Last year, to mark their 54th anniversary, The Doobie Brothers surprised the music industry by breaking new ground on the uplifting Walk This Road album, their first recording ever that featured both Tom Johnston and Michael McDonald.  (The two had recorded with the group at different points in the past, but never together.)

This embrace of the new carried over to Seth Jackson’s production design for the successful national tour that has been supporting the album this summer and fall. Breaking with traditional expectations, the show supported the Doobie Brother’s performance with a vibrant new storytelling design that included no beams.

Jackson explained the inspiration behind the creative process. “Since this show is supporting the first recording with Tom Johnston and Michael McDonald, we wanted something out of the ordinary.

Austria - Linzer Klangwolke, a large open-air multimedia event, has been running annually in the city of Linz since 1979. On 6 September this year it again attracted nearly 100,000 visitors to the Donaupark. Titled Urban Pulse, this year’s edition translated the city’s heartbeat into captivating images and beats – a visually staged concert that harked back to Klangwolke’s roots all those years ago and placed sound itself at the centre. Manfred Nikitser was again responsible for the lighting design, incorporating over 100 weatherproof fixtures from GLP.

The musical foundation for this performance was a multi-part work by the Upper Austrian composer Johannes Berauer, performed by the Bruckner Orchestra Linz and enhanced live by the internationally renowned multi-percussionist Christoph Sietzen, who lives in Linz.

France - ETC’s automated fixture Lonestar was selected to light up the French ‘President of the Republic’ Emmanuel Macron during his speech at the Louvre Museum earlier this year.

The President’s team sought advanced lighting fixtures that could deliver consistently high-quality, reliable output across a wide range of environments for upcoming presidential events.

It was at the annual JTSE tradeshow in Paris where a member of the Élysée Palace team (the official residence of the President of France) discovered Lonestar at ETC France’s stand.

The High End Systems Lonestar offered advantages that were hard to ignore by the team: bright output given its very small footprint, and its quiet operation.

After a thorough phase of testing and research, the Elysée Palace team chose and ordered six Lonestar fixtures from ETC which w

Spain - On the roof terrace of the boutique hotel Monsuau in Cala D'Or, Mallorca, guests can enjoy cocktails at sunset, listen to DJ sets and experience live shows – with a completely new sound and lighting system.

The installation service provider responsible for the new system, Sonomusic, developed a customised system based on solutions from LD Systems and Cameo. The audio and lighting setup is managed and controlled via the QUESTRA design and management software from LD Systems.

The requirements for the audio system were an appealing design to match the look of the rooftop bar, and even sound coverage without disturbing the hotel rooms below or neighbouring residential buildings. “By using the compact LD Systems MAUI i1 column loudspeakers and DQOR SUB 8 subwoofers, we found an optimal solution for this challenge,” explains Andreu Femenias,

The Netherlands - DI-RECT entertained 50,000-plus fans at De Kuip Stadium in Rotterdam for three nights this summer, as the band from The Hauge celebrated a quarter century of making music.

The show started with a soft, gentle mood, with lead vocalist Marcel Veenendaal and guitarist Frans ‘Spike’ van Zoest performing on a diamond-shaped 360-stage. The show then moved to a full (non-360 stage), as the show amped up to included more symphonic parts with an orchestra on tiered risers backing the band, as well as a full-fledged rock show vibe with two towering video walls and beefy lighting rig.

Running this production on five ChamSys MagicQ MQ500M Stadium consoles were Leon Driessen and his team at LD Company. Three of those consoles were used during previz - one for controlling a Disguise GX3 server for video, the two others for controlling lights

USA - Vari-Lite has announced the VL3200 LT Profile IP, a compact, long-throw production profile fixture with over 20,000 lumens of output in a small, outdoor-rated format.

“Smaller outdoor-rated moving lights are becoming highly desirable for use both in production systems and installations. The VL3200 LT Profile meets that need without compromising in specification or performance,” said Martin Palmer, Vari-Lite marketing and product management leader at Signify.

“Unfortunately, many midrange IP6X fixtures currently being offered are not being built to the same robust quality and performance as that of the larger fixtures. Compromises in the design of many current offerings result in poor and inconsistent light output and a lack of overall performance, affecting the longevity of the fixture. Productions are looking for a compact IP-rated movin

USA - Fans got an unexpected surprise near the end of Bassrush Arizona’s closing slot. Headliners Black Tiger Sex Machine shocked everyone when they tore off their glowing tiger masks and performed the final 10 minutes of their show bare-faced.

Matching the sounds with an equally dynamic visual background was a distinctive lighting design by Luis Torres of HiLite Designs powered by 164 Chauvet Professional fixtures supplied by Hardwired Productions.

Torres used this power-packed rig to immerse the entire venue in intensely bright light. At times this light was made of monochromatic washes accented by splashes of white and amber. During other passages during the one-day festival the immersive light was created by video displays, geometric patterns, and laser beams that hurled their way over the entire dancefloor.
