USA - Since forming in the late-1980s East Bay Area punk scene, Green Day have gone on to rack up over 70m in record sales, win multiple Grammy Awards and stage one of their most successful albums, American Idiot, as a Broadway production. The power trio - frontman Billy Joe Armstrong, bassist Mike Dirnt and drummer Tré Cool - now routinely play to crowds of 80,000 or more at festivals, arenas and stadiums worldwide. Whatever the size of the venue, Schoeps microphones play a critical part in the band’s live sound in two key spots.

“Billy Joe wants to hear the crowd sing his songs back to him all night,” says Danny Badorine, Green Day’s monitor engineer for the past 18 months. He uses eight Schoeps MiniCMIT miniature shotgun microphones at every show to capture the energy of the audience for the lead singer and guitarist. “Those Schoeps mi

Canada - From sold-out arena shows to major festival stages, a wave of Canadian country music is sweeping the continent - and behind the sound of some of its biggest stars is FOH engineer Jordan Waller and his trusted Allen & Heath dLive C1500.

The 31-year-old FOH engineer from Langley, British Columbia is the sonic force behind Josh Ross, the 2025 JUNO Award winner for Country Album of the Year. With a resume that now includes the Reklaws, Johnny Orlando, Jess Moskaluke, Dallas Smith, and Tyler Joe Miller, Waller has become one of the most in-demand engineers in Canada’s booming country scene.

Germany - Set against the scenic backdrop of the Ohmbachsee lake in western Germany, Iron Fest Open Air has quickly earned its reputation as one of Europe’s most exciting boutique metal festivals. With a focus on top-tier curation and high-quality production, this year’s edition once again pushed the bar, especially when it came to sound.

To meet the festival’s technical demands, Iron Fest’s longtime audio partner, SPV Neuschwander, selected the HK Audio Cosmo Line Array System to provide sound reinforcement across the weekend. Known for their close relationship, the SPV team recently attended an HK Audio Cosmo demo and were impressed by the system’s flexibility, reliability and sonic character.

“We had complete trust in the Cosmo system,” said Karsten Neuschwander, Iron Fest’s technical producer. “It prov

USA - Situated at Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU) in Murfreesboro, The Murphy Centre - home to the university’s men's and women's basketball and track teams - recently commissioned a new Martin Audio WPS line array system, after a long gestation period, dating back several years.

The contract was won by the experienced Nashville-based Spectrum Sound, which has been providing audio production services to customers since 1979 and has lately been turning increasingly to Martin Audio for its installed sound solutions.

The arena’s outdated PA system had reached end-of-life after years of patchwork fixes. To deliver modern performance and reliability, Spectrum Sound was tasked with designing a new solution. Key goals included consistent coverage, high speech intelligibility and full-range musical reproduction across the 11,520-seat venue. With

USA - The City of Lakeland in Miami Beach, FL celebrated its inaugural Freedom Festival with a full-scale community event that brought together more than 2,000 residents for live music, food, and fireworks at the new Soccer Annex at Lakeland Preparatory School. To ensure the success of the city’s first large-scale Fourth of July celebration, Lakeland enlisted Memphis-based production company ProductionOne, led by CEO Kiley Butler, to manage full production - including critical sound reinforcement for the event’s headline band, regional favourite Landslide.

While the event site was not exceptionally wide, it extended deeply, with scattered food truck generators creating persistent ambient noise. On top of that, the logistical layout was being shaped in real time, with teams adapting to the space for the first time. The challenge was clear: delive

UK - Sound designer and car sound recording engineer Chris Jojo was tasked recently with capturing high-speed audio from a rare Ford RS 200 Group B rally car at BGM Motorsport, which followed a high-speed recording session at Millbrook Proving Ground’s Mile Straight circuit. To ensure the precise detail needed for such specialised applications, Jojo opts for his trusted collection from DPA Microphones.

“I’m obsessed with delivering a visceral, true-to-life racing experience. It’s not just about creating effects, it’s triggering memories and sensations,” says Jojo. “It’s sound design on the ragged edge of engineering, physics and raw emotion. That low-end rumble, the high-frequency scream, the way the exhaust echoes off a tree line - I want to put you there. Using DPA microphones allows me to isolate and reproduce the complex layers of automot

USA - James Butera has chosen Clair Global and multiple Clair brands for audio rental and support many times during his career as both a FOH engineer and production manager, and in his most recent outing with pop star Halsey, he's working with the group once again.

"One of the vendors I grew up working with in Dallas was Onstage Systems which was purchased by LD Systems, and then LD Systems was purchased by Clair Global, so it's kind of come full circle now," he states.

"Large-scale audio and touring are something I've always wanted to do, but I had to pick up other skill sets along the way to get where I am now. The audio vendor I got in with worked with Mary J. UK - As part of LSi's 40th anniversary celebrations, we'll be taking a tour through the archives at our coverage of various shows and productions over the decades. First up, a musical that launched at around the same time as LSi, and is still going strong! When Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Phantom of the Opera debuted at Her Majesty’s Theatre in London’s West End in October 1986, reviewers raved about its spectacular stage effects. These included “a thousand candles arising from a subterranean lake and a ‘gas lit’ recreation of the Paris Opera House of the 1870s”.

Having itself launched just a year earlier – in November 1985 – LSi ventured backstage to meet the creatives responsible for that fascinating flicker effect; something we might not think twice about today, but which was as magic as Paul Daniels back in the ‘80s!

UK - Having won the 2025 Olivier Award for Best Sound Design for Fiddler on the Roof at Regents Park Open Air Theatre, sound designer Nick Lidster revised his solution to meet the requirements of a new, indoor home, the Barbican Theatre. Unlike many conventional proscenium houses, the Barbican relies on chain hoists to fly a PA, making a line array the preferred solution. Happily, sound supplier Autograph offered Lidster the latest technology, in the form of d&b’s CCL (Compact Cardioid Line Array) system.

The new CCL system – bringing d&b’s renowned directivity control to its most compact line array yet – proved the ideal solution for sound designer Nick Lidster at the Barbican Theatre . . .

Lidster was happy with the prospect, having had positive experience of the XSL – the smallest member of d&b’s SL-Series. “I ha

Europe - The World of Hans Zimmer - An immersive Symphony: The Theatre Experience is an orchestrated concert series, that opened in the Oberhausen Metronom Theatre and touring Europe in Spring 2026. Featuring many soloists from Hans Zimmer’s team, the requirement for individual monitor mixes was high, so monitor engineer Thorben Stroehlein turned to DMI-KLANG to deliver all the immersive mixes required.

“We started planning in December and going straight into rehearsals was intense,” Stroehlein explains. “Creating a show from scratch meant we had a lot to cover. We knew the orchestra would be large, with many soloists, and KLANG was our only option. Choosing DMI-KLANG reduced the channel count, but the effortlessly customisable console integration made it worthwhile.”

The show connects audiences with Hans Zimmer’s music in an int

UK - WaveCo Productions once again relied on Dynacord TGX series amplifiers to drive the TW AUDiO sound system for Glastonbury’s Avalon Stage. This was backed up by Sonicue Sound System Software which provided a flexible and user-friendly solution to design, monitor and control the sound system as required.

WaveCo has been supplying the sound and lighting systems to the Avalon Stage for the last four years, using the combination of Dynacord amplifiers and TW AUDiO loudspeakers for the last two editions. For the 2025 setup, WaveCo selected VERA36 vertical array speakers for the main hangs and delays with low-frequency support from VERA S33 subwoofers.
