Attracting leading players from around the world, WSOPE presented by Betfair, complements the WSOP event, which is held annually in Las Vegas. WSOPE 2009 was held at The Casino at The Empire, Leicester Square and broadcast in the UK on sports television channel ESPN (UK).

For the second year running, Innovative Show Design's president, Christopher Runnells, was hired by Nevada based Poker Productions and ESPN (UK) to design the television and scenic lighting for the event.

UK - Entec Sound & Light recently purchased and then promptly employed the new Martin MAC 250 Beam on a House of Worship event at Wembley Arena, the Word at Work Conference hosted by Christ Embassy.

Entec provided lighting, sound, rigging and trussing, media servers, and set video projection for the event. Lighting designer was Entec's Ryan Brown who had six MAC 250 Beams, 12 MAC 700 Washes, 12 MAC 700 Profiles and 20 MAC 250 Washes as well as other automated and static fixtures at his disposal.

The MAC 250 Beam upgrade kit converts any MAC 250 Wash fixture into a punchy new beam effect in only five minutes. Brown chose to use the MAC 250 Beam because "we wanted to achieve beam effects that would render on camera while hiding the fixtures from view," he stated. "I originally had envisioned them for use in 'walk in' looks where they stood a better chance o

USA - As energy concerns rise, LEDs have commanded much of the lighting world's attention.

"When we were first investigating the properties of commercially available LED wash fixtures," says Wybron director of technologies John Sondericker III, "it became obvious that the current offerings were poor in both the color rendering and the amount of light these fixtures produced. We surveyed some of the new and emerging LED technologies for what would be a generation ahead of the current offerings."

Wybron says that such new technologies have made possible the Wybron Cygnus 200W Wash, an LED luminaire . Cygnus is the first fixture on the market to incorporate red, green, blue and white elements housed in a single LED package. This technological adaptation allows colour mixing to occur in the lenses, rather that outside the fixture itself, and also eliminates dis

UK - The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has released a consultation document outlining how it plans to implement a European Union (EU) Directive to protect workers from hazardous sources of artificial light.

Intense sources of artificial light in the workplace, particularly from UV radiation and powerful lasers can harm the eyes and skin of workers and need to be properly managed.

The Directive aims to ensure that standards are set and harmonised across the EU so all workers are protected from harm arising from exposure to hazardous sources of artificial light.

Workers in Great Britain are generally well protected from hazardous sources of light and the majority of businesses know how to manage these risks effectively. The draft regulations are designed to ensure that businesses do not face unnecessary additional burdens where there is no risk of harm to workers.

USA - Jason Lyons, lighting designer for the new Broadway musical Rock of Ages is using a full Martin MAC rig to visually energize the rock love story.

Playing at the Brooks Atkinson Theatre, one of the ideas of the show, says Lyons, was to have a flavour of 1980s rock lighting, "par can rock" as he calls it. He started by creating a configuration of MAC 2000 Washes that worked both theatrically and looked great in the air for the show's big numbers.

"The 2K Washes are amazing and punchy and perfect for this kind of task," he comments. "What we really needed was the ability to cut through the washes in a big way, both for punchy aerials and very powerful specials within full stage looks. The MAC III Profile fit the bill perfectly. Even with dense templates and saturated colour, the MAC IIIs really stood out as a major part of the stage picture.&
