Hong Kong - Barco's ILite 6BK LED backdrop was recently used for the Miss Asia Pageant 2009. The event, whose grand final competition took place on 1 November 2009 in Hong Kong, was produced by Asia Television in cooperation with Barco rental partner AV Promotions Limited Corporation (AVP).

The ILite LED tiles were all provided by AVP and deployed in a complex configuration for the event. AVP worked closely with the Asia Television design team and production crews to configure the visual display stage backdrop in a relatively short period of time. What's more, as is standard with all Barco rental partners, along with the visual solutions, AVP also provided professional technical support 24/7 throughout the event. The team effort paid off, as the show was a resounding success. Miss Xu Ying, from the Chinese mainland, won the crown as Miss Asia 2009.

USA - Elation Professional will be introducing an intelligent spot/wash moving head "like no other seen before" at LDI 2009 in Orlando. The new Platinum Spot 5R emits an output comparable to a 575-watt fixture, yet it's half the size, uses less than half the energy, and weighs half as much as a typical 250-watt fixture, says the company. It also moves faster on pan and tilt, as well as on colour/gobo changes.

In comparison to a 250-watt fixture, the Platinum Spot 5R not only weighs 50% less, but blasts out twice the output, uses 25% less energy, while measuring 2/3 the size.

This ability to obtain 575-watt-like brightness in such an incredibly small, fast, energy-efficient package is something that designers and lighting installers have constantly asked for, said Eric Loader, director of sales for Elation Professional. The Platinum Spot 5R represents a giant advance

Denmark - Martin Professional has teamed up with Wybron to offer an innovative lighting feedback system based on the industry-standard feedback protocol Remote Device Management (RDM).

Called Martin RADAR, an acronym for Remote Access Diagnostics And Reporting, the information feedback and monitoring system enables users to communicate with lighting fixtures by gathering lighting fixture data remotely and sending it to operators for immediate attention. It allows troubleshooting and fixture repair to be completed in minutes instead of hours, cutting down on expensive repair time and increasing productivity and ROI.

Martin RADAR uses RDM to collect fixture data from an installed system - or from a rig before and during a show - and then modifies it if needed (DMX, lamp, fixture status, etc.). It enables checking lighting equipment and diagnosing any problems from the convenien

Poland - During the Sunrise Festival, Kolobrzeg becomes a real focus for techno fans in and around Poland. DJs like Eddie Halliwell, Fergie, Ferry Corsten, John O'Callaghan and many more performing on two stages ensured that everybody had a great time at this year's event. Lighting designer Pawel 'Spider' Pajak chose a grandMA control system, and for the first time, a brand new MA VPU (Video Processing Unit).

The festival ground was divided into the Cube Stage and the Ring Stage. The Cube Stage was run by two grandMA full-size consoles, one MA VPU and three MA NSPs (Network Signal Processors) which were controlling 60 Clay Paky Alpha Beam 300s, 24 Alpha Wash 575s, 10 GLP Impression XL luminaires and 22 A&O Falcon 7Ks.

On the Ring Stage was a single grandMA full-size plus a grandMA light, with two MA NSPs. The rig here included 12 Clay Paky Alpha Beam 1500s, 44 Alpha Wash 575s,

India - Lighting designer Tim Dunn specified a grandMA full-size console to run lighting for the Twenty 20 Champions League cricket Opening Ceremony event, staged in the Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bangalore.

Produced by Venkat Vardhan of DNA Entertainment Networks, one of India's leading international event companies, the 30 minute all-action Opening Ceremony show featured a cast of 350 including Japanese drummers, Shaolin Monks, lotus flower dancers, silk performers and local schoolchildren, plus three international stars - Chaka Khan, Jamelia and Shaggy.

Dunn (from Gearhouse South Africa) was asked to design the event's lighting by DNA after delivering an impressive show for the Closing Ceremony of the Indian Premier League (IPL) cricket tournament in Johannesburg in May, for which he also used a grandMA.

He didn't think twice when it came to specifying a console. He's used a gr

China - Approximately 40,000 people packed into the TaiZhou Sports Centre Stadium to see a star-studded line up of the biggest music and comedy superstars from China and Hong Kong perform in the acclaimed Golden Autumn concert. This was recorded for broadcast by the local TV station, TaiZhou TV.

Over 100 Robe moving lights - a mix of ColorSpot and ColorWash 1200E ATs - were used for the show in a design by Bovey Xie, with all the equipment supplied by Beijing based rental company Wen Jing Xuan's Shanghai office, along with 30 lighting crew.

Xie's creative starting points for the design included making it look big, bold, bright and lively with an appropriate sense of spectacle. He also needed to make each of the 12 performances - which included Kelly Chen, Alan Tam, SunNan, JiangKun, A-Mei and many more - look different and individual, matching each of their styles with

UK - amBIENT XC made its debut at the Higher Life Conference at Wembley Arena, featuring five shows over three days, 11-13 September. Each day featured a morning service and an evening service, with the audience remaining within the arena between the shows.

The idea was to use the amBIENT XC to run the LED lights in the arena between services to achieve a dynamic look that would respond to the stage state without having an operator present. The stand-alone DMX 512 hardware controller for RGB LED lighting fixtures is designed to create sensory surround experiences synchronising light, video and sound.

The amBIENT XC controlled 12 x 1m XBAR LEDs, 48 x i-pix Satellites and 10 x Thomas PixelLines. The ambient effects proved to be gentle and smooth enough to not detract from the ongoing religious experience, yet it still provided a dynamic look without having to program or o

UK - EvenLED, the modular LED cyc backlighting system has continued to win new friends across shows of all genres in the year since it was first supplied by White Light to the UK tour of Mary Poppins - the company having recently supplied systems for new opera, for television, for corporate events and for comedy.

"I think it's the best new piece of kit I've seen in ages - I never want to light a cyc again without it," is how lighting designer Peter Mumford describes his experience with EvenLED on Prima Donna. The new opera, written by Rufus Wainright and performed at this year's Manchester Festival, used an array of 111 panels to light Anthony McDonald's set. "I was able to use EvenLED for the cyc, but also for the back 'glass' wall of an enormous room - and even 'raw and exposed' in intense green for one of the enormous scene changes. The sequence f

South Africa - The Market Theatre Johannesburg, made its choice of new lighting console after researching and testing the various options for nine months.

In an historical connection, Dan Riley from DWR Distribution, was involved with the installation of the Market Theatre's first desk - a Compact 80 - when he worked there as a technician in the early 1970s. Some 33 years later, he was more than delighted to present them with a slightly newer model... a grandMA2 ultra-light.

Carl Johnson, production manager at the Market reports that various issues influenced their decision to go with MA. "The majority of the theatres/companies that we receive, and also those we send productions to are utilising or migrating to grandMA technology, including some of our international partners. Many Lighting Designers with whom we work regularly speak very favourably about the grandMA, the

Belgium - ADB Lighting is showing its newest products at JTSE 2009, from 24-25 November at Dock Pullman Paris - including several products that are on show for the first time in France.

ALC4, the new ADB LED cyclorama fixture for theatre and TV studio lighting, launched at IBC 2009, offers a range of one million DMX-controlled colours including pure yellow and soft ambers and seven levels of preselected white (2700° K to 6500° K). The unit is exceptionally 'green' in terms of energy efficiency, delivering the equivalent of 1250W of halogen power for an actual power consumption of just 160W.

Uniform colour mixing in the LED source eliminates coloured shadows and visible pixels. It provides smooth, flicker-free light output, with no colour or white changes when dimmed, while an optical feedback circuit, per LED source, guarantees consistency in colour, white and light ou

UK - With the opening of the prestigious Westfield Shopping Centre in West London, earlier in 2009 exterior media specialists Ocean Outdoor installed three Lighthouse LED screens nearby on the A3220/A402 Holland Park roundabout. The screens have proved an outstanding success and Ocean has now completed the next phase of the project by providing two more Lighthouse screens for Westfield, this time over the dual carriageway section of the A3220.

Despite being one of the shortest A roads in the UK, the A3220 is also one of the busiest, forming a vital link between Clapham on the south and the A40 at White City. So the overbridge at the northeast corner of the Westfield site was the ideal location for further Lighthouse screens to complement the highly successful installation at the Holland Park roundabout, just to the south.

Two screens have been installed, one facing northbound

UK - Having thoroughly enjoyed their union at the recent PLASA show, Red Square Audio and Gearsource Europe have continued working together to increase their respective market goals.

RSA MD Paul Nicholson explains: "Due to the economic downturn I was looking at ways of making what we believe are already extremely competitively priced products, namely the Tannoy VQ Live and the Innovason Eclipse, even more affordable. It's clear that some rental companies are reluctant to enter into finance schemes when interest rates are virtually at zero, yet lenders are still asking for 10% + APR interest on leasing and hire purchase deals.

So, we decided that one particular route to owning new cutting edge audio products would be to offer a brokerage scheme whereby Gearsource Europe could directly manage a deal to move on a customer's existing or redundant equipment in order to release
