USA - The US Department of Energy (DOE) has announced today that the Bright Tomorrow Lighting Prize (L Prize) competition has received its first entrant, a product from Philips Electronics. Philips has developed, manufactured and will bring to market an LED replacement for the common 60W incandescent light bulb. Philips developed this product in response to DOE's industry-wide challenge, and was today recognized by DOE as the first company to submit an entry.

DOE launched the L Prize initiative to spur development of high-quality, high-efficiency LED replacements for the common light bulb. Every year it is estimated that more than 425 million 60W incandescent light bulbs are sold in the United States alone, representing approximately 50% of the domestic incandescent light bulb market. According to DOE, an LED replacement for this could save 34 terawatt-hours of electricit

USA - The Wybron Mobile Showroom, a custom-built, state-of-the-art enclosure hits the road for its first leg of stops beginning the first week of October 2009.

While in the San Antonio, Houston and Dallas areas, the Mobile Showroom will provide hands-on demonstration of Wybron offerings and an opportunity for 'tΩte-à-tΩte' with lighting professionals, including their local dealers. Most importantly, however, the Mobile Showroom offers education on the general theory behind and mechanics of professional lighting to an audience who may be unfamiliar with either or both, says the company.

"The challenge of this industry is to actually get information to the people who will benefit from it," said Wybron CEO Keny Whitright. "A trade show is terrific, sure, but you're often lacking time to connect with all the folks you would like to."

Denmark - The Martin Professional MAC 401 Dual is a versatile LED moving head washlight with a double-sided design that gives it flexible dual functionality, for example as a double washlight or beam reflective mirror.

The MAC 401 Dual's advanced wash characteristics combine with a host of other useful features like fast zoom and individual LED segment control to add a new and inventive element to touring and rental applications, TV shows, corporate events, night-time venues and leisure environments, says the company.

36 new, multi-colour, single-point source LEDs produce "an outstanding colour quality". The 401 Dual's innovative colour mixing system fully blends colours at the source before they leave each lens so that individual source colours are not seen. This eliminates the problem of rainbow shadows and the messy multi-colour lens looks of traditional LED fixtu

Canada - CAST Software has announced that Ubisense, with offices worldwide, is the latest partner to BlackBox, providing rapid response real time location detection to the product. Ubisense specialises in precise realtime location systems, tracking people and assets.

Ubisense provides BlackBox the live precise location of moving objects and people needed to automatically direct lighting and sound equipment with zero latency. This object can be anything from a live performer to a scenery piece.

Through Ubisense, BlackBox processes a constant stream of exact 3D locations needed to control movement of sound and lighting equipment automatically. This Ubisense system

UK - Royal Philips Electronics' LED based lighting solutions have contributed to the overall reduction in energy consumption on Radiohead's latest tour. Value added reseller, Architainment, supplied a variety of LED systems advocating Radiohead's keen commitment to environmental responsibility.

Andi Watson, creative director for the In Rainbowstour, explains: "Doing away with conventional lighting on set was a massive leap of faith for us. Of course our concerts are all about delivering the music but the fans expect a visual spectacle as well. At the same time, we can't just pollute the atmosphere merely for effect."

Watson continues: "Having put the LED equipment through its paces we were convinced it was the right way to go. To be honest, not having a single discharge or incandescent lamp in the design has set a new benchmark for us."

UK - Martin Professional had on display at PLASA09 show a full Maxxyz Modules concept, the company's modular lighting control solution that is creating a buzz among lighting designers and installers.

Martin Professional product manager Paul Pelletier explains: "Today's lighting control needs cannot be satisfied by a single surface that works for everyone and every application.

"The Maxxyz Modules concept allows for full customization of a lighting control system while keeping it simple and easy to manage for rental houses. As an example, a set of four Maxxyz Modules can be used on a single rental event or split over four different rental applications, something simply not possible with typical large moving light desks. Flexibility is the key word here. The modules concept is certainly the way forward for controllers."

UK - When satellite television company Sky realised that their ever-growing staff numbers and hectic production schedules were making it harder and harder to host a traditional staff Christmas party, they invented a completely different alternative: Skyfest, a mid-summer outdoor festival exclusively for Sky's staff and their guests. Running over two days in London in July for the London-based staff, then two days in Edinburgh in September for those working for Sky in Scotland, Skyfest this year featured lighting from White Light.

Brought in to the project by event organisers The Rouge Partnership, White Light provided a complete lighting service to both the London and Edinburgh Skyfests, including equipment rental, installation, show operation and load-out. South Africa - The Joburg Theatre (the re-branded Johannesburg Civic Theatre) has just received training for its new grandMA2 full-size console.

Enos Ramoroko, stage officer at the Joburg Theatre comments: "We have to cater for many international companies and the grandMA platform is the most specified console on any technical riders. That's the main reason we bought it. Our team are very happy to have a new desk." The training from DWR Distribution was presented by Nick Britz.

Duncan Riley from DWR Distribution says: "A grandMA2 full-size is what they wanted. There was no demo either, and it was just to cope with their international shows." On a personal level, Riley adds, "I have had a relationship with the Joburg Theatre since 1994 and it has always been a pleasure to deal with everyone there. I would personally like to thank Bernard Jaye and his am

Germany - Stephan Aue, lighting designer for chart-topping German rock band Silbermond used 24 i-Pix BB7 LED wash units as the main over-stage lighting on the band's latest tour, promoting their Nichts Passiert (Nothing Happened) album. The concept was such a success that he intends to expand it for the next leg of the tour in November, when the shows step up a level.

The band's initial brief for the tour lighting included a request for a 'classic' rock 'n' roll appearance to the stage that was not full of modern clichés and something that specifically didn't resemble any of the standard 'LED looks' that are the trend of the moment. His challenge was to produce something different within those parameters.

He took the bold move of deciding not to use any moving lights overhead, and no LED panels. The no LED panels idea was re-thought for the festival section of th

Italy - Cruise line Costa Cruises (Costa Crociere) has launched two new ships - Costa Pacifica and Costa Luminosa - simultaneously at a spectacular ceremony at Molo Doria in Genoa. The double launch, a first of its kind, was lit by LD Fabio Maschera of Switch On of Milan, using Martin MAC III Profile luminaires.

Maschera needed a fixture with the power of the MAC III Profile to handle long throw distances as well as a stage dominated by an LED wall; a high impact light that could cut through the many videos involved in the show.

Reliability was also an important factor. Maschera was especially concerned about the need to project gobos diagonally because of the difficulty in maintaining focus at varying distances and angles.

Enter the MAC III Profile, which had recently been purchased by Italian rental company Musical Box Rent. "It is really quite different

Offering seamless integrated control of lighting equipment of all types, Clarity is a software-based system running on either PC or Mac that offers an interface familiar to users of existing lighting controls, but also a host of new techniques for controlling the com

Lighting designer Howard Harrison and associate lighting designer Pia Virolainen used a grandMA full-size, a grandMA light and three MA NSPs (Network Signal Processor) as well as grandMA 3D for pre-visualisation.

Pia Virolainen comments, "The central issue here was to make the show tourable whilst retaining the original look of the show. We reduced the number of conventional units quite considerably and adjusted the moving light rig accordingly. The back cloth is now lit by led battens instead of striplights and ETC pars - this proved to be ver

Germany - E/T/C London's Ross Ashton was invited to create a video projection art work on the Germania statue located in the Niederwald Landscape Park, near Rüdesheim am Rhein, Hesse, Germany, as part of the 2009 Rheinpartie Festival of Light.

Ashton's carefully crafted mix of colour and precision lighting transformed the imposing 38m tall monument, built to commemorate the foundation of the German Empire after the Franco Prussian war in 1883, into a symbol of European peace and harmony.

Ashton was first approached at the beginning of the year to contribute a work to the festival by its curator and co-ordinator Helmut M. Bien, who already had Germania in mind as a site. Says Ashton "It was a huge honour to be invited to the Rheinpartie, and even more so to specifically be asked to work on a such a key site with the historic and strategic relevance of Germania.&quo

UK - The people behind FocusTrack, the increasingly popular tool for documenting show lighting, have announced the launch of another useful lighting tool: SpotTrack.

SpotTrack is a new program for making and managing followspot cue sheets - something that has traditionally been done in Excel or Word using ad-hoc documents created from scratch as required. SpotTrack, by contrast, has been built for the job - managing shows with one to four spots, and making it easy to do things that have traditionally been hard, like printing the cue sheets for each spot without it being full of blank lines occupied by cues for the other spots. At the same time, SpotTrack breaks up the cue sheet into scenes or songs, making it easy for the caller and all of the spot ops to find their place when jumping around the show during technical rehearsals.

SpotTrack also aims to reduce the amount of typi
