UK - Since the release of their debut album Speak & Spell in 1981, Depeche Mode have had 50 songs in the UK singles charts, 17 top 10 albums in the UK chart and have sold over 100m records worldwide. For their current Depeche Mode Global Spirit Tour, Front of House engineer Antony King has chosen an L-Acoustics K1 system, supplied by UK rental company Britannia Row Productions.
Depeche Mode have worked with Britannia Row for more than a quarter of a century and this longstanding relationship with the company and the pristine equipment it provides gives peace of mind to both the band and their engineers, who are certainly putting it through its paces, with the stadium tour starting this past May in Europe and concluding in March 2018 in South America.
With the tour playing over 90 dates in stadiums and large-scale venues around the world, a system that prov

USA - For over 30 years, DeHerrera Event Services has been working behind the scenes to make the performances, conferences, and celebrations in the area around Pueblo, Colorado come to life.
The company’s highest profile work includes concerts for up to 5,000 people (Foghat, Jimmy Eat World, War, etc.) and its regular gig running AVL for the three free stages of Colorado’s State Fair. But DeHerrera Event Services also has plenty of bread-and-butter work running modest AVL systems at weddings, graduation ceremonies, and the like.
Because its large-format consoles are overkill on those smaller jobs, company owner Wayne DeHerrera recently picked up two of Ashly Audio’s new digiMIX24 digital mixers, which pack all of the features of his larger consoles into a 14” x 20”, 17lb frame using a clever workflow that, in DeHerrera’s words, “has anyone I’ve shown it

UK - Funktion-One rental house and sound production company, Sound-Services Ltd., worked together with the loudspeaker company to produce the Funktion-One ‘Experimental Ambisonic Soundfield’ for The Glade Stage – the major electronic and dance music stage – at The Glastonbury Festival.
Sound-Services put in a Cadac CDC seven live sound console FOH, for its audio performance, allowing the audience to fully appreciate the ambisonic configuration of the Funktion-One Evo system.
Sound-Services installed a Funktion-One Evo Touring system, comprising a main-stage FOH system with four additional positions; the six loudspeaker positions arranged in a perfect hexagon, 36 meters in diameter, to create the sound-field. The ‘Experimental Ambisonic Sound-field’ was not a discreet configuration but a system design wherein all loudspeaker positions conjoined to generate a

The Netherlands - In July, the Dutch port of Rotterdam hosted the 42nd North Sea Jazz Festival, attracting over 75,000 people to enjoy a rich variety of music. Headlining the Nile stage on the final night was Jamiroquai, where a Yamaha Rivage PM10 helped a capacity audience of 10,000 to get funky.
Taking place across 15 stages in the city’s Ahoy arena, the North Sea Jazz Festival is so popular that it sells out every year. This is partly due, no doubt, to the variety of music on offer. As well as classical, contemporary and futuristic jazz from across the globe, the festival features blues, pop, hiphop, dance, soul, world and funk.
Yamaha Music Europe supplied the pianos and drum kits for all stages at the festival and actively helped to provide a range of backline for many of the artists.
Funk / acid jazz specialists Jamiroquai brought the festival to a close

UK - Shure Incorporated will be returning to the PLASA show next month at Olympia, London.
Shure will showcase its comprehensive line of digital wireless systems and participate in the traditionally well-attended PLASA seminar programme. Tuomo Tolonen, Shure UK’s Pro Audio Group manager and RF expert, will discuss how to prepare for the loss of the 700MHz RF band, which is being auctioned in May 2020, and will no longer be available for wireless microphone and in-ear monitoring system use.
Shure now offers several digital wireless systems to meet a variety of budgets. The entry-level GLX-D Advanced system, mid-tier QLX-D and ULX-D, and the flagship Axient Digital wireless system will all be available for demonstration at the Company’s exhibition stand at PLASA (G40).
Launched earlier this year, Axient Digital incorporates a newly designed minimal-latency dig

“I’ve been with SXS a while now and have been blown away by how well our team maintains some of the highest standards I have seen in every discipline in which we work. SXS is a genuine one-stop shop with technical an

Germany - The spectacular classical music production Schloss in Flammen (Castle In Flames) in the courtyard of the Mannheim Castle was recently mixed on an Allen&Heath dLive C Class C3500 provided by Auditiv from Kassel/Germany.
Schloss in Flammen – a classical music highlight in the festival season in Germany – is a stunning mixture of classical music and synchronised fireworks. The orchestra and solo singers from the National Theatre of Mannheim perform arias and other parts of various famous operas.
“The big challenge of this production is that we have nearly no time for rehearsals and soundcheck,” explains FOH engineer Rolf Dressler. “This is where the easy handling and flexibility of the dLive shines and it got even better with firmware 1.4 and 1.5 and new features like DCA spill and the improved scene management. I also love the sound,

Brazil - As one of the world’s most famous tenors, tickets for the final world tour by José Carreras have been in huge demand. The A Life In Music tour has seen sold out shows around the globe, but a particular highlight for Front of House (FoH) engineer Peter Schneekloth was the Brazil concerts, which he mixed on a Yamaha Rivage PM10 console.
Peter has been the live sound engineer for Carreras for 16 years, mixing hundreds of shows in concert halls, arenas and stadiums in more than 50 countries. The A Life In Music tour started in 2016 with a sold-out show at London’s Royal Albert Hall and has included concerts throughout Europe, the Middle East, the Far East, USA, Central and South America, Australia, Russia and other territories. Sell-outs and standing ovations have been a regular feature, with Carreras’ management hoping to book more for 2018.

Singapore - Cloud Electronics has appointed Loud Technologies Asia (LTA) as its new distributor in Singapore. LTA, a subsidiary of Trektech, is a principal distributor in the region, providing the Singaporean market with a portfolio of products from a number of reputable brands, such as K-array, One Systems and Chauvet.
Having confirmed the appointment following a productive meeting at ISE2017 earlier in the year, Cloud managing director Simon Curtis feels his decision to appoint LTA as their distribution partner has been fully justified.
With offices in Singapore, Indonesia and Cambodia, LTA is managed by Colin Quek. ‘I’ve been a fan of Cloud’s engineering quality, such as the perennial Z4 and Z8 zone mixers for many years, representing the brand is a great honour’, Quek comments.
“From an installer’s point of view, the reliability of their easy-to

Europe - Front of House engineer Pete Johnson is impressed with DPA’s d:facto Linear Vocal Microphone, which he is using on the current Glass Animals tour.
“It’s absolutely great,” he says. “At points in the set Dave Bayley (Glass Animals’ vocalist) often sings quite softly while at the same time we want the show to be big, punchy and powerful. The d:facto Linear has excellent feedback rejection and lets me keep the amount of surgery I need to do to a minimum - always a bonus. We’ve used it in all different settings too, from tiny clubs to football stadiums. It’s taken all the stress out of achieving a solid vocal sound.”
Johnson has been a FOH engineer for 15 years and has worked with an impressive list of artists including Bonobo, Coldcut, Laura Marling, Leftfield and Django Django. He’s been mixing Glass Animals since May 2016 and is currently to

Adlib’s director and account handler Dave Jones looked after the audio elements alongside senior account manager Dave Eldridge who oversaw the lighting & video requirements. Jones comments: “We are immensely proud to have worked with Brendan and the cast over the years and to see the concept grow and develop. We’ve

UK - Old Barn Audio has completed its third Martin Audio CDD installation within Olympic class venues owned and operated by Lee Valley Regional Park Authority (LVRPA).
Following successful fit-outs of the Lee Valley White Water Centre and Lee Valley Ice Centre, they have now completed a challenging installation at Lee Valley Athletics Centre in Edmonton.
This required the company to install a 30m-long roof truss section down the middle of the 200m six-lane oval track, six and a half metres up in the air, to support over half a tonne of Martin Audio’s popular CDD 12, CDD 10 and CSX sub woofers.
Built 10 years ago at a cost of £15m, the Centre plays host to a wide range of athletes - operating as an elite venue for Olympians as much as a walk-in facility for the general public. Boasting 4,000 admissions a week, it is the busiest indoor athletics facility in the

UK - Live Recording’s Rob Baldock took himself and his six Audient ASP880s up to Nottingham’s Splendour festival last month, to capture multi-track recordings of all the artists on the main stage, including Gabrielle Aplin and Busted.
Hired by local TV station, Notts TV, Baldock is in his fifth year at Splendour - where this year a record-breaking 25,000 people partied at Wollaton Park in the rain - and wasn’t fazed by the increased audience, or the weather. Indeed the eight-channel ASP880 mic pres from the British manufacturer continue to serve him very well. “The patch at a festival changes with every band, and the advantage of having the same mic pres across every single channel means that I can rely on that sound quality and gain without compromise - regardless of what microphone or line signal I'm being given,” he says.
“It did rain this year at Splend

Brazil - A personal dream to bring state of the art recording facilities to the Brazilian city of Porto Alegre has led producer/engineer Rafael Hauck to invest in PMC MB2 XBD monitors for his new studio, Audio Porto.
The monitors have been installed in the facility’s main control room, which links to five recording spaces including a large live room with a fibre optic internet connection for live streaming. Audio Porto also has a second, smaller control room and a 250-capacity lounge area with a stage for live gigs, presentations, courses and events.
Rafael Hauck chose PMC monitoring after hearing the MB2 XBD system at Metropolis in London and subsequently visiting PMC’s facility in the UK for further demos.
“I was immediately hooked,” he explains. “It didn’t take long for me to realise that this system was exactly what I wanted for Audio Porto. It

South Korea - A 1500 seater church in South Korea is installing speakers made by Lincolnshire-based Logic Systems Pro Audio.
The church has chosen to install 18 of Logic’s Ethos VA range, a vertically arraying front of house PA system suited to a wide range of applications. A minimum array is composed of three boxes, with more typical configurations being composed of six to 12 boxes.
Leigh Comins, Logic Systems’ operations manager, explains: “The installation also includes two Nd315 cabinets for extended bass response and a ground-stack of four Nd218.
“The Nd315 can be flown above an array or used as the basis of a ground stack. If required, multiple Nd315 cabinets will lock together when ground stacked. For larger applications, where substantial sub bass reinforcement is required, the Nd218 cabinet can be ground stacked with the system. Twelve compact a

Spain - BBC Radio 1 made its annual pilgrimage to Ibiza during the first weekend of August, with an extensive programme of live events and studio broadcasts. The event was powered by a Funktion-One Evo sound system from Cheshire Event Production.
“Café Mambo asked us to supply the complete audio production,” explained Cheshire Event Production’s Olly Wayman. “This is the second time the event has taken place on the rocks and the second time we have been asked to supply. We provided everything audio, right up the BBC splits.”
The Funktion-One rental partner deployed a main system comprising six Evo 7E (three per side) and 12 F121 single-21in bass en

UK - A comprehensive seminar programme at the forthcoming PLASA 2017 exhibition at London Olympia, 17-19 September 2017 includes a presentation on Safety First by Helen Goddard, fellow member and vice president of The Institute of Sound & Communications Engineers (ISCE).
On Monday 18 September, 11:00am-11:30am in the Fast Track Theatre at the exhibition, Helen will present a Safety First seminar outlining the ECS Certification Scheme and how it affects audio engineers working on sites and in venues. She will also outline how sound engineers can become accredited for this growing Health & Safety and core competencies standard within the construction industry.
A recognised ECS trade card is increasingly requested by clients and main contractors in order for operatives to gain access to sites and venues for equipment upgrades and routine maintenance.

USA - Two EAW sound reinforcement systems have been installed at the First Baptist Burleson, located in Burleson, Texas for use in their traditional sanctuary and their contemporary multi-purpose worship space, named three1seven.
First Baptist Burleson technical director JimBob Brown worked closely with Tim LaPrade from Pro Audio, a Texas-based distributor and systems integrator in Grand Prairie, Texas, to design and install the new systems.
“When I came on board the church had recently installed a system in the sanctuary that just wasn’t getting the job done,” explains Brown. “It was the wrong system for the space with poor coverage of the room. It got to the point where they decided to do something about it when I joined the organization, so I contacted Tim LaPrade at Pro Audio, to see what our options were.”
The original church sanctuary is a tradi

South Africa - The line-up for Huawei Joburg Day held earlier this year at Emmarentia Dam included Freshlyground, Jeremy Loops, Locnville and Gangs of Ballet. For. Sound Stylists came to the party with DiGiCo and were commissioned as the full technical suppliers of the event.
The owner of Sound Stylists, Kevin Glover, is no stranger to Joburg Day and remembers the early days when the festival was hosted at Gold Reef City. A capacity crowd in those days was 2 500. “This year we supplied the full infrastructure from power to lighting, audio and screens,” said Colin Loock, branch manager at Sound Stylists. As for Kevin, he was stationed at FOH, looking after each of the band’s FOH engineers while sound engineer Shaun Hershel took care of the monitors on stage. Colin managed the stage with the rest of the team.
The sound system included a DiGiCo SD10 which was used f
