After many years with Trantec, Tim Riley has left to form his own company - Richmond Unicorn Ltd - with the aim of marketing and selling what he describes as "the value for money option in many market areas".

Riley has his venture with Smartwireless. "After so many years in the radio mic business, it's clear that there is a large chunk of the market that is never likely to be as brand aware as the large radio mic companies would have us believe." he says. "Certainly there are end users the world over that will settle for nothing less than the market leader but I'm hoping to exploit the vast section of pro audio consumers, schools and colleges, churches, pubs, clubs, karaoke, DJ, aerobics and countless others that will rarely if ever be influenced by the hundreds of thousands of pounds of marketing money spent on them." He continues: "These people neit

Professional audio distributor, Rock Centrum, has completed a major indoor and outdoor installation in the Slovakian city of Martin. The company was approached by the city's mayor and a panel of architects to create a fitting audio system for a high profile new pedestrian area and the glass-sided ‘Millenium’ building within it. The open air space is dominated by 10 translucent columns, which project a light and sound show into the central square. An Allen & Heath GR1 three-output analogue zone mixer routes audio to the columns, which contain five Crown XLS series amplifiers and 10 Tannoy i8 AW all weather speakers. Delays are provided by a Digitech Studio Quad4 multi-effects processor.

Beyond the columns, the pedestrian area is overlooked by the suitably impressive Millenium bar. The building is divided into four independent zones, each fed by an output from an Allen & Heat

Rising dance stars Kosheen have gone from touring pubs and clubs in a Transit van to playing the main stage at V2002 in just 18 months. This month, they embark on their first ever production tour with a Martin Audio, XTA, Midas and Sennheiser system supplied by Capital Sound. The nine-date UK tour runs from October 10-25 with the final night at Brixton Academy.

Capital Sound’s Paul Timmins explains: "We supported them and provided monitors on a 12-week tour last year when they were on their way up, and they’ve come a very long way very quickly. A year and a half ago were still going around in a van and now they’re taking out a full production including sound, lighting and projection."

This autumn’s one-truck tour production features a Midas Heritage 3000 for FOH with engineer Simon Thomas and a Midas XL4 on monitors, mixed by Dave Lee. 14 cabinets as

One of the largest concentrations of its kind in the world, a record-breaking number of 26 BSS Jellyfish has been ordered for installation in the leafy backwater of Bagshot in Surrey. Denon has unveiled the latest addition to its range of CD players - the DNS5000. Among its many features are a Motor-Drive Active Platter offering scratch and search with the feel of an analogue turntable, 2 in 1 alpha track, hot starts, hot disc, mirror mix, user-replaceable drives and three-way scratch.

The most significant feature of the S-5000 is that the platter spins - the machine is a true CD turntable. To emulate a record deck as closely as possible, the turntable has a vinyl disc on with grooves cut into it, replicating the feel of a conventional record! The S-5000 offers the ability to manipulate the vinyl disc in the required stylistic manner, plus the added bonus of no stylus - and no jumping! The Forward/Back function is perfect for ‘cutting in’ samples without having to close the mixer fader - like having an extra hand! The platter can be assigned to scratch e

JBL Professional is excited to announce the first international installation of Precision Directivity Series loudspeakers. Vodafone Arena, a premiere sports and entertainment venue in Melbourne, was recently renovated with PD speakers, receiving a very positive response. The 10,800-seat Vodafone Arena features retractable and removable seats to accommodate various events including tennis, basketball, live music concerts and a velodrome for bicycle races. A retractable roof, which takes ten minutes to fully open or close, allows the venue to be transformed from an indoor arena to an outdoor venue. The roof presented an understandable challenge when designing the sound system. Since the system could not be mounted in the centre of the arena, the catwalk running around the perimeter of the open roof was utilized.

The original sound system, consisting of a six-element circular array of 15&

Hayden Laboratories, exclusive UK distributors for Rane pro audio products from the US, launches Rane’s new AC 24, stereo 4-way active crossover. The product is aimed at domestic, commercial or professional use, and for those wanting to optimize their audio systems. The AC 24 combines conventional analogue controls with digital signal processing. The result is a fully-featured, high performance product.

Digital technology links the analogue inputs with the analogue outputs (these are XLR balanced) with the analogue controls on the front panel allowing the AC24 to perform in a way not possible using analogue circuits. The analogue Linkwitz-Riley implementation guarantees, by definition in phase adjacent outputs, which allows the two signals to sum correctly. The use of digital processing allows the product to add appropriate phase compensation so that all outputs add properly when

D.A.S. Audio sound reinforcement systems have been installed at ‘Dinopolis’, one of the worlds most modern theme parks, based on the age of the dinosaurs. Dinopolis, is divided into various halls, each with its specific subject matter, such as the Hall of the Sea, Hall of the Mammals or the Paleontology Workshop. Besides the now famous ‘Time Traveler’ attraction, which places the visitor in a special all-terrain vehicle for a ride through the origins of life on our planet, two new attractions have been added. ‘Saurus Park’, aimed at keeping the very young visitors busy and ‘T-Rex’, featuring a life-sized Tyranno

Some of the biggest names in television gathered at the Royal Albert Hall in London on October 15 for the ITV 2002 National Television Awards. But everyone in the packed auditorium had a ring-side seat - thanks to the presence of several Screenco big screen displays. The main backdrop was a 40sq.m 25mm LED screen, upstage centre, reinforced by two 13 x 8 sq. metre 15mm IMAG displays, situated left and right of the stage. Screenco also provided a plasma display for the backstage press area.

While the centre screen was sent a feed comprising of stage close-ups, the flanking screens and plasma display took its feed from the live television mix. Hosts Trevor McDonald and Tess Daley presented the awards, screened on ITV1, while this year ITV2 also broadcast exclusive coverage from backstage and the glamorous after-show party. Taunton-based rental company APR Audio has just invested in an impressive 60-box X-Line system from Electro-Voice, complete with 14 racks of the new Electro-Voice P3000RL DSP remote-controlled amplifiers, all supplied by Shuttlesound. Following the product's UK PLASA launch, this is the very first remote amplifier sale in the UK, and the first worldwide that will be supporting a stadium-sized X-Line system. In addition, APR has also purchased a 40-input Legend 3000 supplied direct from the Midas factory in Kidderminster.

For Andy Reed of APR Audio, an existing X-Array user, the decision to invest in X-Line was straightforward. "I had been looking to increase my inventory for some time, and as an existing X-Array user, my first port of call when looking for a new system was naturally Electro-Voice. I was invited to go and see how the X-Line system performed on Rod Stewart, and fran

The Aberdeen Exhibition & Conference Centre in Scotland is about to complete a one-year, £18m expansion and redevelopment project. The venue’s two existing halls have been expanded to provide conference capacities of 2,000 and 500 respectively, while two new 700-capacity multi-purpose suites have been added.

GB Audio of Edinburgh won the contact to supply and install sound systems in these four spaces. The brief was to deliver consistent, high definition sound throughout the complex. To further complicate the requirements, each individual suite has the ability to divide into two independent spaces, meaning that the sound too would have to divide down and even operate in different directions if required. GB Audio achieved this by deploying a BSS Audio Soundweb DSP system controller, which offers instant recall of preset EQ and delay settings at the touch of a button. A total of 4

David Corrick of Stringwood Professional Services in Cardiff has recently completed a number of church installations using a full suite of Telex/EVI products, in particular from Electro-Voice and Dynacord, supplied by Shuttlesound. Among the most recent is the Thornhill Church Centre in Cardiff into which Stringwood has installed a full multimedia system. The Thornhill is far more than just a traditional church - the building was completed five years ago, and in addition to providing church services also acts as a community centre with activities going on seven days a week morning, noon and night. To that end, the budget to put in the multimedia AV system was quite generous.

In the main hall, where the majority of the church services take place, Corrick has installed two ElectroVoice Sx300 full range cabinets and a SUB 800 A active subwoofer from Dynacord, while foldback on stage is

Edinburgh-based AVC was recently appointed by The Gleneagles Hotel to design and install a complex integrated audio system as part of a massive refurbishment program to restore its magnificent Ballroom and to make it suitable for use both as an entertainment venue and a multi-faceted conference facility.

As the sole distributor for Bi-Amp in the UK, beyerdynamic’s Jon Stanley and Simon Druce collaborated with Douglas Bolton, AVC’s System Designer to specify a very flexible, multi-purpose system, which centred around Bi-AMP’s digital audio platform - Audia. The Ballroom, complete with stage, proscenium arch and balcony, is ideal for theatre-style conferences, awards ceremonies, live performances and gala evenings. The Gleneagles Hotel required a system that could be used flexibly by its in-house technical team and easily operated by non-technical users if necessary.

Nexo SA has published EASE and CATT data files for its PS and Alpha loudspeakers, along with the GEO S830, on its website. The data was measured by Nexo R&D under the direction of technical director François Deffarges and R&D manager Rémi Vaucher.

"With the growing use of EASE and CATT, not only by acoustical consultants, but by design/build contractors in many countries, we feel it’s important to make accurate data available in current formats," Deffarges commented. "We hope that this new data release will make it easier for sound system designers to compare the predicted performance of Nexo loudspeakers with similar products and to make the best choice for any given application."

The EASE and CATT data files are available as a 752kb Zip archive from the website below:

Biamp Systems has announced the introduction of several new products and significant software enhancements that will serve to expand its digital audio platform. One such introduction includes a group of three remote panel controllers, as well as a Logic input/output box to control Audia.

The three remote control panels offer several new features: Volume 8 allows up to eight individual or group levels with Audia. The levels may include inputs, outputs, mixer levels, matrix cross-points or any number of volume controls. Select 8 provides the selection and control of up to eight actions from within Audia. This control can be used to establish presets, mutes, ducking and/or combining. Volume/Select 8 combines the functionality of the Volume 8 and Select 8 on one two-gang panel. According to Ralph Lockhart, president of Biamp Systems: "We wanted to give the end-user as much flexibility

Following the launch of its new sales department earlier in the year, Birmingham's SSE Hire has recently completed a major overhaul of the audio system at Sheffield University. The brief given by the University's technical manager Pete Brenchley was to provide separate systems for the three venues at the University. The Octagon, the largest of the three venues, was to have a new main PA system capable of handling touring acts. The Foundry, which runs seven nights a week with a variety of events and music styles needed new main PA, foldback and control equipment and Fusion, the Union bar, was to benefit from an installation capable of running in the background all day and coming forward to power the DJs at night. On top of this, the systems needed to be completely compatible with each other so that gear could be moved from venue to venue depending on the show to be supplied.

VDC has supplied Taunton-based rental company APR Audio with custom-built cable looms for its new Electro-Voice X-Line PA system, enabling the remote operation of its Electro-Voice P3000RL DSP amplifiers. This is the first application of its type in the UK, and the first in the world to be configured for a stadium-sized X-Line system.

Andy Reed of APR Audio has been a customer of VDC since he started out in the audio rental business, so it is no surprise that every length of cable for his new X-Line rig has been sourced from the London company. A variety of Van Damme products, including Black Series, Blue Series, Socapex-based speaker multicores and breakouts, and associated panel work, is in place, but the innovation lies in the custom link looms that combine armoured Cat 5 data cable with audio lines. These looms connect stage systems to the front-of-house control, and enable the amp

Marquee Audio has masterminded a multifunctional/multimedia design and installation in the 1000-seat auditorium of a greenfield development in Tonbridge, Kent. The company was awarded the contract by Harvester Conferences, a subsidiary of Harvester Trust, to equip their new development at The River Centre.

This will enable Harvester - a community-motivated, Christian charitable organization - to operate as a conference and community facility, as well as a church centre. Harvester had already made the decision not to extend to the 9m high ceiling which would have enabled them to have presented unamplified speech projection (instead opting for a 6m floor-to-ceiling pitch). They also opted for an amplified state-of-the-art PA system with full conference facility audio-visual, and put the work out to tender.

With seven-day utilization in prospect, Marquee recommended a Nexo system as bei

Audio Projects have supplied and installed a Martin Audio sound reinforcement system to the Hazlitt Theatre in Maidstone, having won a competitive tender. Sound engineers had been unhappy for a while about the sound in the theatre, particularly the dead spots. The theatre’s production and operations manager, Eric Lund, realized that an upgrade was essential, so with Audio Projects’ Stephen Hall set about investigating several alternatives before being invited to a demo of the EM series at Martin Audio’s High Wycombe HQ.

"It was a question of finding a product that would provide the right coverage, because there are 300 seats in the stalls and a further 56 in the balcony," said Stephen. "I knew the Martin range would provide the coverage and versatility for the wide band of shows the theatre receives - and because several of their management live locall
