With a capacity of 3,000, Ireland’s largest dance club opened its doors this month in the town of Carrickmacross, County Monaghan. Owners Kevin McKenna and PJ Woods have invested nearly €5 million in developing what is arguably Ireland’s first superclub, around a Martin Audio Wavefront 8 Compact system. Woods had known Rea Sound from previous leisure ventures but the Cookstown-based company still had to win a tender to develop the dancefloor and balcony (with a small, 200-capacity chill-out room in the next stage of development). "When they gave us a chance to quote we thought we’d show them just what the Martin Wavefront system was capable of, as we were under serious pressure from other leading brands," says Sean. "So we took them on a tour, and they were quickly convinced."

This sounded the signal for Martin’s product manager, Richie Rowl

The Alien 51S from Mach is a recessed speaker system designed for demanding background installations where wide dispersion and high quality audio reproduction is needed. Designed around a 5" co-axial drive unit with a 3/4" neodymium tweeter, the Alien 51S offers high levels of clarity and a wide and well-controlled dispersion.

The compact design integrates a passive crossover and a 100/70V transformer into the housing and allows the user to operate the speaker from either traditional or 100V amplifiers. Because it is based on the same cabinet as the Alien 05 colour changer, installing multiple Alien products - both colour changers and speakers - is straightforward. Useful in a wide variety of applications, the 110-degree acoustic coverage pattern ensures even sound pressure and tonal balance throughout the coverage area. As a special feature, the Alien S51 comes with a softwa

ESTA has announced that two draft standards are up for public review: BSR E1.5, Entertainment Technology - Theatrical Fog Made With Aqueous Solutions Of Di- And Trihydric Alcohols, is available for a second public review. These theatrical fogs and mists are often used as visual effects or to enhance lighting effects in live performances such as dramatic productions, musicals, and popular music concerts, and are commonly called "glycol fogs." Canford’s Tecpro range has been expanded to include a completely new digital ‘Wireless’ system. This new development includes the full functionality of the existing Tecpro system, but without all the drawbacks of a ‘hard-wired’ system. A full range of complementary products has also been designed and manufactured by Canford to provide a complete wireless communications infrastructure.

At first glance the new Tecpro Wireless system looks almost exactly the same as the existing hard-wired Tecpro system. This is no doubt as a result of the familiar, robust extruded aluminium cases Canford’s and Tecpro products are so often contained within. However, those sturdy little boxes conceal the latest in DECT technology permitting over 100 wireless beltpacks to be used in the same physical area and at a distance of up to 300 metres from a base station. The BBC Proms season finished in typical style with the finale of the Last Night of the Proms at the Royal Albert Hall, which was relayed via a giant screen link to open-air audiences in London, Gateshead and Dublin as part of the biggest-ever final weekend of the Proms. Hyde Park in London also hosted two extra events on the day after the ‘Last Night’. Pop Idols Will Young and Gareth Gates joined the BBC Philharmonic for a sell-out CBBC Prom in the Park on Sunday afternoon, and Sir David Attenborough hosted a magical ‘Blue Planet’ Prom in the Park later that evening. Outdoor event specialists System Sound were contracted to provide the audio requirements for events in Hyde Park across the weekend, and they turned to Hand Held Audio for all their radio and licensing needs.

HHA supplied System Sound with some 40 channels of radio over the whole weekend, the major

At the recent PLASA Show, New York-based Audio Reality USA Inc signed a major distribution deal with Opus Audio for the US East Coast territory. An initial order was placed for a 60-box demo system, including XS series system controllers and HD series high definition power amplifiers.

Richard Dyne, of Audio Reality USA Inc. commented: "This deal has been in the planning for over two years now, ever since I first experienced the effect of the Opus system at a major London event, Gatecrasher and Creamfields. Their modest British approach, drive for innovation and the company’s pursuit of excellence in sound reinforcement completely won me over and has convinced me that the US market is now ready for this unique product. Audio Reality USA Inc operates from a 15,000sq.ft warehouse and office facility just 20 minutes from NYC in Kenilworth, NJ, complete with a purpose-built demon

CP Sound continues its incredibly busy year with its latest club sound and lighting installation at Harry's Bar in Weymouth. The busy nightspot in the South Coast resort has undergone a complete refurbishment and its new look is a colourful, contemporary psychedelic interior with a powerful and impressive sound system.

Russia's biggest new stadium has opened with an Apogee sound system. The new 30,000-seat Locomotiv Stadium in Moscow, the home of Russia's major league Locomotiv soccer team and Russia's national team, is the first stadium of its size in Russia designed and built to include a state-of-the-art sound system. The new stadium features 16 Apogee ALA-9 Line Array loudspeakers and is the first open arena system in Russia in which audio signals are routed and distributed entirely within a CobraNet network.

"Locomotiv Stadium combines distinct and unusual architectural ideas with high-tech safety, communication, and other systems - including the finest sound in Russia," said Andrei Kremenchugsky of MediaMatrix Center, the installation department of Dom Zvuka Ltd of Moscow. L-Acoustics has remained faithful to the principle of coaxial technology that it pioneered in the late eighties with the introduction of the MTD product line, and has recently released the XT line, featuring the latest generation in coaxial components. Compared with traditional horn and woofer combinations, L-Acoustics systems are ideal for distributed sound reinforcement, and demonstrate the benefits of coaxial technology, such as single point source radiation and excellent phase response; total wavefront coherency at any frequency; axi-symmetrical directivity and dispersion characteristics free of polar lobbing.

The end result is natural, studio monitor level sound quality, ideal for proximity use and perfectly matching semi-reverberant environments. Multi-purpose in their format, MTDs and XTs are all-in-one products that can be used as a compact FOH system (with or without subwoofe

Amália The Musical has been taking the Portuguese theatre scene by storm over recent months, becoming the most successful Portuguese production ever - with audiences exceeding 1.5 million to date. Directed by Filipe La Féria, the musical charts the life and career of the Portuguese fado singer, Amália Rodrigues. Tragically, she died just before the première of the show about her colourful past opened in Funchal, Madeira, in December 1999, moving to the Politeama Theatre in Lisbon in July 2000. The show went out on tour in early 2002, complete with a new Cadac F-Type Live Production Console, and is currently set to move to other European cities in 2003 and ultimately Brazil as well.

The sound system was designed by Carlos Esteves, technical director of CHS Sound and Light Hire. Amália The Musical is a complex and challenging show to mix, with 54 actors on stage and 38

The Stanton Group has announced the purchase of the assets and brand name of Cerwin-Vega Inc. Confirming the company’s successful bid, Stanton president and CEO Gerard Cohen stated: "We are very excited about this opportunity to grow and expand our business portfolio. We feel that the strength and heritage of the Cerwin-Vega brand name will be a strong complement to our existing businesses and create synergies in the future. We also clearly recognize the value of the existing customer base and are committed to maintaining strong business partners going forward. Stanton will stand strong behind the Cerwin-Vega product and brand name."

Recognizing the difficulties Cerwin-Vega had faced this past year - requiring them to solicit protection from creditors - the Stanton Group had become instinctively attracted to owning one of the greatest names in the speaker industry over

In mid-August, Zurich hosted the 10th Streetparade, Europe’s largest techno music event, which was attended by 600,000 people from across the world. The event’s central features were the Lovemobiles, huge trucks equipped with high-power sound systems, and animations, to ‘bombard’ the crowd with techno sounds.

This year’s event featured a total of 29, of which three (24m long and 3.5m high) were 'armed' with systems by Italian manufacturer Outline: 4 Modulo Road High, 4 Modulo Road Bass, 8 Doppia, 4 Bomber, 8 Stackbass, 8 Victor Live, 4 Victor Disco, 4 Topsub, 8 Minisub, 16 Digita, 8 Omnia, 2 Tripla, 6 Flyone and 2 Stage 15 - all powered by digital T series power amps and processed by Genius 6 DSP. The Youth Wind Orchestra of Grimma, Germany, was hit hard by the recent catastrophic floods - but Telex/EVI Audio was able to help. Along with countless households and firms, the Youth Wind Orchestra of Grimma was severely affected, but what was particularly cruel in their case was that after spending years saving up for a first class sound system, they had barely had time to unpack it when the waters of the Elbe burst in and destroyed not only their new acquisition (a new Dynacord Cobra system) but virtually all their orchestral instruments as well.

Luckily, help was at hand: the Rudolf Wild Werke of Heidelberg, the Großkelterei Rötha GmbH, the Musikhaus Dassler of Choren and Telex EVI Audio stepped in quickly and put together a rescue package consisting of money and material aid sufficient to reequip the young musicians not only with new instruments but with a new Cobra system as w

Brähler ICS has completed the planning, supply and installation of conference technology systems for the main boardroom and press briefing room in new premises now occupied by E-ON, a major energy corporation in Dusseldorf. Video and projection were included as part of the overall project. Joinery was provided by Koenig & Co. Being on the 9th floor, the boardroom has a magnificent view over the city, while the building’s architecture imposes a curvature on both the room and the table, which create a visual dynamic as well as having implications for the acoustics.

The CDS-200 microphone management, which is integrated with a 16-channel interpretation system, allows board members to listen to the proceedings, vote, and use their authenticating chip-cards. The standard TM55 microphone was modified to a length of 500mm to allow for even better audio quality. Information conveyed by

Stardraw and ProSoundWeb have announced the launch of 'Stardraw.net from ProSoundWeb'. Stardraw.net is a suite of technologies that allows one to design and document integrated systems through a browser using an on-line library of thousands of industry-specific symbols, and is believed to be the world's first web-based CAD system.

'Stardraw.net from ProSoundWeb' represents the introduction of a web-based application that incorporates tools and data tailored to the professional audio market. Stardraw MD David Snipp explains "Our conventional applications have established the sorts of tools that integrators find easy to use and valuable for system design and documentation. This web-based application has been customized for ProSoundWeb to provide their Stardraw.net subscribers with similar functionality within a ProSoundWeb web page."

The recently-launched Artist Elite series of microphones has quickly established itself as the first choice for some of the biggest names in the music industry. Artist Elite users include Rush, Jewel, Vanessa Carlton, Puddle of Mudd, Third Eye Blind, Def Leppard, Amy Grant, Michael W. Smith, and Cinderella.

Currently on tour with Rush, front-of-house (FOH) engineer Brad Madix, a long-time Audio-Technica user who has worked with Marilyn Manson, Def Leppard, Queensryche, and Bruce Hornsby, commented on Rush’s choice of Artist Elite: "We’re using AE5400s for lead singer Geddy Lee’s vocals and two AE3000s on Neil Peart’s rack and floor toms," stated Madix. "Our monitor engineer and I did a blind listening test and put the AE5400 against all the usual suspects. We turned our backs while one of the sound guys went from one mic to the other, and we both

Audemat, Aztec Radiomedia and Digigram have announced the merger of Audemat with Aztec Radiomedia, a subsidiary of Digigram, with effect from 31 December, 2002. The merger will result in the formation of a new company within the Digigram group: Audemat-Aztec Solutions.

"This is a logical move in Digigram’s development strategy for the broadcast and public address markets," said Philippe Delacroix, Digigram managing director. "This merger will accelerate growth, especially in the broadcast sector. Audemat-Aztec Solutions will reap benefits from the commercial, technological, and financial assets of all three companies involved."

"We find ourselves today at a turning point in broadcast. With the arrival of digital technology and the development of Intranet/Internet networks, companies need to be reactive. Both Audemat and Aztec Radiomedia rose to this cha

Following a highly successful launch at the recent PLASA show, Hand Held Audio has become the first company in the UK to invest in the new APM Series (Advanced Personal Monitoring) hardwired distributed personal monitoring system from Garwood.

The APM Series is designed to provide a simple and cost-effective solution to a familiar problem for sound engineers and production managers: how to provide distributed monitoring for a large orchestra/band setup (such as with a West End musical or a studio recording session) without the hassle and expense of either a wireless system, battery- or mains-powered headphone monitoring, or open loudspeakers. It also provides a perfect solution to providing large numbers of audio feeds at events such as press conferences.

According to Hand Held's Nick Bruce Smith, the APM Series addresses a very real issue to which they had yet to find a completely s
