Sydney - For four nights only, the Sydney Festival transformed Sydney Town Hall into a swing-dancing heaven - featuring a huge dance floor and floorshow, with swing music played by Sydney's all-girl Sirens Big Band, just as in the venue's halcyon days - but with plenty of 2011 edge. Sydney's original Trocadero had its heyday in the 1940s and 50s but was demolished in the 70s. Today, its spirit lives on in the re-imagined nightclub named the Trocadero Dance Palace.

The lighting in the venue, designed by Matthew Marshall and including around 50 moving lights and a collection of LED fixtures along with generic theatrical lights, was programmed and operated by Peter Rubie who opted to use a Vista T4 running the V2 Byron software for control. "After beta testing Vista Byron in its early stages I was impressed by its feature set and vast improvements on Vista 1," remarked Pe

In 1991, Sir Paul wrote the Liverpool Oratorio with Carl Davis for the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra's 150th anniversary.

USA - Main Light Industries has introduced the LED-powered LightStar fibre optic illuminator, part of DiCon Lighting's FiberLamp product line. LightStar uses an LED light engine comprised of Red, Green, Blue, and White LEDs for a broad spectrum of colour choices as well as reducing the power draw and weight.

A key feature of the LED-powered LightStar is that it produces an output comparable to, or greater than, a fibre optic illuminator using a 150-watt metal halide light source. In a white colour mix, the LightStar is equivalent to the 150-watt metal halide powered illuminators. By using an LED light engine there is no transmission loss with a colour filter, so in deep, saturated colors, the LightStar has a greater output that is equivalent to 250-watt illuminators.

"By using LEDs as the light source, we have significantly decreased the power draw for the illuminator sin

UK - Light Tape UK has announced the launch of new portable, quick recharge, compact, battery units to drive the Light Tape product in its various portable applications.

The new units have been specifically developed to address the existing limitations associated with driving Light Tape using portable battery technology.

Light Tape has been used for many applications in the event, exhibition, entertainment and safety industries but the main barrier to its more widespread use in these sectors has been the size and poor performance of current battery technology, says the company.

At present, a DC power unit has to be supplied separately to the battery, switch and charger which can make the solution bulky and difficult to conceal if for instance the Light Tape is required to be lit for an extended time, so requiring a larger power unit. Or, time consuming if a smaller battery w

The new site is full of useful information, and not just about RC4 products: "Getting into wireless and making the most of it really demands a bit of general knowledge about different kinds of batteries, about the various rf bands and frequencies being used, about what's involved in getting DMX and other kinds of control information into the air and back again. Without facts it's difficult to make an informed decision about which product is right for a particular application," says Ja

Australia Linkin Park's latest Australian shows saw Linkin Park's lighting designer, A J Pen, use 41 x Vari*Lite VLX Wash as well as 12 Vari*Lite VL*3500 Wash.

"Every manufacturer has their LED wash light that is slowly evolving and I first heard about the VLX just prior to its release," says Pen. "I was programming a show in the States when a Vari*Lite rep told me all about it so I was excited to see it nearly a year later. I placed one side by side with a couple of other LED wash lights and immediately I could see it was a 'game changer' - an evolution of the wash light. It's definitely a tool and not an effect.

"The approach that Vari*Lite seems to have taken is to replace the guts of what the wash light already is, what we've come to know and love. Wash lights have colour mixing, they generally have a dimmer that's separate from a strobe channel and the
