UK - Blackburn-based HSL continues an active 2010, supplying lighting and crew to the current UK and European tour by Australian drum 'n' bass rockers Pendulum, whose distinctive hi-energy sound and performance is storming around the world with their third album Immersion.

The show, a fusion of video and lighting, is designed by Mark Calvert of Immersive (formally known as Pixel Addicts), together with his colleagues John Munroe and Dave Green. It features a striking set architecture constructed from special dollies containing Barco MiStrip LED screen, which has its own set lighting system some parameters of which are controlled, along with the video content, by Immersive's Addict show control system. Additional lighting onstage is controlled through a 'traditional' lighting console operated by lighting designer Simon Barrington.

USA - Martin Professional has confirmed that a deal has been reached between Inner Circle Distribution (ICD) and Martin Professional, Inc. (MP) that sees industry veterans and ICD owners Nick Freed, Noel Duncan and Gary Mass trading in their circle for a yellow triangle and rejoining the Martin US team.

During their time at Inner Circle Distribution, Freed, Duncan and Mass, all of whom have previous work experience at Martin US, emerged as key players in the US rental market.

Inner Circle Distribution has been involved in the entertainment industry since 2005 as a distributor of primarily moving head lights throughout the USA, Canada and the Caribbean.

France - For the past 12 years, Cyber Fest Noz has taken place in Brittany as one of the major cultural events for Bretons. For seven hours on 22 May, multiple bands had Breton people all over the world dancing via the Cyber Fest Noz website.

This year, over 200,000 people were connected via the Internet to the event, which took place at the Music Hall in Rennes. To transmit the concert via the Web, broadcast staff used eight high definition cameras, as well as a package of Martin lighting and control gear provided by rental company MES of Nantes at the request of SIWA director Jose Nedelec, who handled technical direction and audio for the event.

For this year's event, The National Broadcaster of Norway, NRK utilised a maXim M supplied by Multitechnic in Oslo for Stage Motion control, drapery, silks and drop downs.

Ukraine - Coemar has helped to unearth new stars in Eastern Europe. Successfully Got Talent, the talent show for amateur artists, has just finished in Ukraine, duplicating the success of the previous year which attracted 13m viewers.

For one evening the various contestants were illuminated by the same lights as those used for the great world artists, a deliberate contribution to the show by the lighting designer Maksim Balashov who used various Coemar projector models in order to create different atmospheres and emotions.

The impressive lighting installation created entirely by the Italian company, comprising over 120 projectors, illuminated a whole range of talents - dancers, singers, musicians, actors and many others.

UK - HSL supplied all stage lighting equipment and crew to the Israeli Opera production of Verdi's Nabucco, staged at a new purpose-built open air site in the middle of the desert on the World Heritage site of Masada Mountain, by the Dead Sea in Israel.

HSL was brought onboard by Jerusalem and Tel Aviv based Stage Design, who supplied all the technical infrastructure for the high profile six-day event, and built most of the site. It was the first time the two companies had collaborated, which happened after HSL came highly recommended by several contacts.

USA - The 2010 Tony Awards were announced in New York City last night, with the Donmar Warehouse's production of Red leading the pack with six awards - more than any other single play or musical production. Red won best new play, best director (Michael Grandage - artistic director of the Donmar) and best featured actor in a play (Eddie Redmayne). Other members of Red's British creative team also came out on top, with Christopher Oram winning for best scenic design, Neil Austin for best lighting design of a play and Adam Cork for best sound design of a play. Austin, who earlier in the month won the Drama Desk award for his work on the same show, was actually nominated twice in the category, the second nomination for the Donmar Warehouse's Hamlet.

The course saw 11 people become certified Vari-Lite technicians, including five from DWR, whose Duncan Riley organised the workshops following recent significant sales in the region, including to rental company, Gearhouse South Africa and the newly kitted out Supersport HD Studio at M-Net, where VLX Wash luminaires were supplied by AV Unlimited.

UK - An innovative lighting scheme based on a system used by American fire and rescue trucks will provide the finishing touch to the refurbishment of one of Edinburgh's most famous landmark buildings. The system, designed by Edinburgh-based lighting company Black Light, comprises 14 lamps that will illuminate the upper level and copper dome of the Usher Hall. The new lights will be hidden when not in use and will be deployed using a system of pneumatic masts like those used on the roofs of emergency vehicles in the USA.

"When we were handed this project we looked everywhere for the right technology and found the perfect solution in America. USA - Wireless Solution Sweden once again joined the lively crowd of Coachella, California's fastest growing music festival.

The three-day Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival held 16-18 April in Indio, California near Palm Springs used the W-DMX system to achieve otherwise impossible cabling for an event of this size.

The production company for the site lighting at Coachella was Visions Lighting of Placentia California run by Todd Roberts. The system consisted of a single W-DMX BlackBox S-1 transmitter and 20 receivers controlling 20 7kW Falcon moving lights from A&0. The lights were mounted on 30ft towers, surrounding the festival area. An 8dBi omni antenna was at the transmitter, and each receiver had a 24dBi grid antenna. The longest distance was 2033ft.

Qatar - Athletes from 150 countries competed in the IAAF World Indoor Championship held in Doha, Qatar recently. A total of 1,134 athletes and officials attended what was the IAAF's most important event of the 2010 World Athletics Series.

The event was held at the Aspire Dome, credited as the world's largest indoor multi-purpose dome, offering the highest quality facilities for multiple sports and international events.

The event was managed by Big Events Australia. At the opening and closing ceremonies, TechnoPro (Qatar) provided and installed lighting fixtures and truss structures - with the lighting dominated by automated fixtures from PR Lighting (which they distribute in the region). Hungary - Clay Paky products were found in abundance at the recent Havasi Symphonic Red Concert held 4 - 5 March 2010 at the Budapest Congress & World Trade Centre. This was a surprise concert during the conference of the 20th anniversary of Generali-Providencia Insurance company, Hungary's second largest insurance company.

Noted pianist Balázs Havasi was the featured entertainment, performing with the Havasi Symphony and 40-person choir. Havasi holds the Guinness Record for The Fastest Pianist in the World by managing to beat the same bar on the piano 490 times within a minute - a title he earned in November 2009.
