USA - The Ghost Bar on the 55th floor of the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas has recently upgraded its lighting with a design created by Adam Gregory of Kelly Communications. The installation features Martin Architectural Alien 05 stem mount fixtures hung from the ceiling above a series of curled acrylic photographs. Light from the Aliens penetrates the images, stretching the figure out onto the wall behind. The Alien fixtures (600mm stems) typically project a subtle blue but the Alien's palette of other colours is also integrated from time to time with six different looks programmed on a Martin 2518 controller.

USA - Element Labs Inc reports that Large Screen Video Imaging has taken initial delivery of a 50sq.m order of Versa Tile. The equipment has been placed in LSV's rental inventory, and the purchase makes LSV the first rental partner for Versa Tile in the US.

John Rigney, president of Large Screen Video, commented: "We are very excited to have this product in our arsenal. Everyone who sees it goes 'Wow, that's cool!' It's clear that Versa Tile's innovative and unique nature will keep our inventory very busy."

UK - Telectra, manufacturers of the ice lighting range announced recently that it is now available to order direct from the company. The initial product consists of eight hexagonal ice lighting tiles fixed to a batten which has its own power supply and on-board thermal management system adapted from Telectra's aerospace experience in electronic engineering.

Each tile contains 48 pixels which are individually addressable RGB LEDs featuring a Beadlight diffusion screen (patents pending). The Bead light technology (patents pending) employed within the system was originally developed for the aerospace industry to gain the advantages of LED lighting such as low power consumption and low heat emission, without the disadvantage of directional glare often associated with LED's.

Japan - Tokyo City Keiba is a horseracing track located in Ooi, Tokyo, one of four built in the 1950s in central Japan. Since its opening, Tokyo City Keiba has entertained huge numbers of fans and, since 1986, has made a great success of its night time Twinkle Race.

With the help of Martin color changing projection, Tokyo City Keiba is continuing to change the horse track's entertainment concept. USA - VLPS Lighting Services, Inc. has announced that the Software Version 5.0 upgrade is available for all Virtuoso consoles. The new version is the first to run natively in the Mac OS X operating system, and the upgrade includes the latest release of Mac OS X Panther.

New features include inhibitive sub-masters, track and fill cue editing, a media window providing graphical browsing and selection of digital media content, and a high resolution encoder mode for precision control of 16-bit parameters. Other enhancements include luminaire type-specific parameter labelling in the console status windows and timing/function filter displays, expansion of DMX512 support to over 700 universes (using external Virtuoso Ethernet Nodes), and expansion of the Beam Palette to 200 selects. The Virtuoso SV 5.0 upgrade is now available exclusively for purchase through VLPS Lighting Services.

Chinese manufacturer Pearl River recently signed with Italian distributor EtaBeta Electronics. The company was demonstrating a wide range of fixtures at SIB including its Pilot 575 moving head, which is available in 100/120V and 200/240V versions, and includes various colours (two wheels of six dichro colours plus white), gobos (seven interchangeable glass gobos plus fixed wheel) and effects (including three and five-facet indexable prisms).

Space Cannon introduced an extensive line-up of new architectural lighting fixtures utilizing high-power Luxeon LED sources. These included the Helyos external colour-changing fixture; the Heos in-ground colour changing fixture for internal applications; the Olympus colour changing washlight for indoor and outdoor use; the Athena striplight - ideal for colour-washing individual window spaces; and the Poseidon underwater colour changing washlight. These fixtures were in addition to the range of conventional source fixtures, including the Pegasus - a 150W/250W unit which uses a patented colour-mixing system consisting of two dichroic tubes, one of which slides in and out of the other to produce a wide range of colours and shades. Using the same colour change system is the Focus, available in 575W, 600W, 700W or 1200W versions.

Tryka LED had recently sealed a distribution agreement with One 4 All. This was the first time Tryka had demonstrated its LED colour-changing lighting products to the Italian market. Indoor fixtures include colour changing strips in a variety of lengths (with the option of optics to control the light output), the flexible LinkLED in either single-colour or RGB, the popular MR16-sized Module 3 and Module 6 and the bigger Module 12. Tryka's outdoor range features IP67 and IP68 rated units (the latter suitable for underwater installations); projectors include the Module 12 (equivalent in size to AR1-11/Par 36) and Module 36 (now available in IP68 version) and in-ground units like the compact but bright Module 1.

UK - Lighting and sound sales and installation specialists Lighting Logic has designed, specified, supplied and installed a complete lighting system for the television studio at The Brit School in Croydon, Surrey.

Lighting Logic's Mick Cocker worked closely with Brit School technical manager Andrew Smith to design and specify exactly the right equipment for the studio. The space is used constantly by students from the School's Media Department for project creation, and also by students and staff from other courses. Cocker has worked on two previous Brit School installation projects.

A major feature of the installation is a flexible Manfrotto IFF Top Rail advanced studio suspension grid system. This tracking mechanism is movable, allowing all overhead lighting fixtures to be moved around the studio quickly and easily without using cumbersome and complex access gear. Effectively

The extension offers two extra banks of 10 playbacks for larger shows, with motorized faders and LCD buttons as per main console. The extension slots easily onto either side of the desk, thoughtfully catering for both left- and right-handed operators.

USA - With the introduction of Catalyst DV v1.0 Media Server and Software, High End Systems Inc. now offers two scalable Catalyst Media Server solutions for any size project and budget.

High End Systems (HES; Austin, TX) is now segmenting its Media Server products into Catalyst Pro and Catalyst DV offerings. In 2003, HES introduced the Catalyst Pro v3.0 Media Server, featuring four video layers and twin outputs. Now designers also have the option of the Catalyst DV v1.0 Media Server and Software, which offers three crossfadable video layers and one output, sized for many new budgets and projects. Decima's distributed product lines include Look Solutions' range of tiny smoke machines and Le Maitre's more heavy duty models; also represented were hoists from Verlinde and rigging hardware from Doughty Engineering, as well as ETC Europe and Transtechnik Lichtsysteme. New from ETC was the CEM+ (Control Electronics Module) which, the company says, takes dimming to a whole new level. Designed to connect directly to the ETCNet2 Ethernet system, the CEM+ equips the dimmer rack with an Ethernet control signal input that is fully configurable with a range of patching and priority programming capabilities. ETC also showed its new RRFU (Radio Remote Focus Unit), which joins the RFU (cabled Remote Focus Unit) and WRFU (Wireless Remote Focus Unit) in the company's range of hand-held tools.

Italian manufacturer Coef showed its stylish new MP 200 wash and spotlight fixtures, both single-arm yoke-mounted moving heads using a 150W lamp source (CDM-SA/T, HQI-T or HSD). Features of the wash version include 11 colours plus open (with intermediate colour positioning), adjustable speed rainbow effect and strobe, blacklight filter and internal PFC; the spot version additionally offers four metal and two dichroic gobos (all interchangeable).

Alongside its Giotto range of moving head fixtures and its Regia lighting control consoles, SGM introduced its stylish new Palco range of LED-based architectural washlights. Design for both indoor and outdoor use, the IP65-rated Palco fixtures use high-power Luxeon LEDs in either 3W (Palco 3) or 5W (Palco 5) variants. The output is given as an impressive 2,500 lumens for the Palco 5, and a range of interchangeable lenses are available to suit varying throws. Palco units are compact and weight just 13.5kg.

USA - VLPS Lighting Services recently provided a full lighting package for the nationally televised awards gala honouring those who help and improve children's lives. Hosted by Children's Miracle Network's co-founders Marie Osmond and John Schneider, the annual awards ceremony was held over two evenings in the ballroom of Walt Disney World's Coronado Springs Resort. Utah-based Cornerstone Technologies provided technical services for the event.

"In previous years, the show depended heavily on a conventional rig with 3K and 5K Fresnels," said lighting designer Matt Endicott of Cornerstone. "For the first time, I requested a full line of Vari-Lite products, complete with VL 3000 Spot luminaires, VL 2000 Spot luminaires, VL 1000 TS, VL5 Wash luminaires, and VL6 Spot luminaires, because we were really blown away by the performance and flexibility of these lights. Ayrton's export manager Ivano Burato reported good business for the company's LED-based Easycolor colour changing moving heads, which come in large (36 LED) and small (18 LED) flavours. Burato added that the level of interest in the products from the TV studio market in particular had been surprisingly strong; examples include the use of 28 units for the French pop TV show, Hit Machine.

PSL - 'Programmi e Sistemi Luce' - now supplies a number of brands aside from its core show lighting products. Other ranges available from the company include the Lightmakers range of lighting fixtures for theatre, architectural, exhibition and decorative applications, the Aromadispenser - which does exactly what it . . . etc, Tecno Truss trussing and the Party Line range of DJ lighting effects and smoke machines, among others.

Italian manufacturer LDR is one of the few companies around which has enjoyed significant sales growth over the past 12 difficult months; director Lisa Papi puts this down to the company's compact and therefore manageable size, and also the relatively tight market focus of its range of stylish but functional theatre luminaires. On the same stand, Jan de Jonge was showing the latest dimming products from IES, with emphasis on custom units for differing power requirements.

A bespoke solution designed for the National Theatre in London is now offered as standard - a 6 x 2.5kW dimming pack switchable to 3 x 5kW.

The new iSpot 1200 from Coemar, previewed at SIB, is a moving head fixture available in normal or electronic ballast (EB) versions. Utilizing a 1200W discharge lamp, its includes a five-colour wheel, a high-resolution colour-mixing system, two gobo wheels (each with six gobos), two rotating prisms, proportional frost, CTO correction filter and iris.

Also from Coemar, the ShowColor 3200K and ShowColor 1200 have a halogen lamp and a discharge lamp with electronic ballast respectively. These moving head spotlights are designed for stage and TV studio applications, and form part of a new range of luminaires engineered to provide maximum light output from the source, say Coemar. Both offer colour mixing via an "innovative radial CMY system", while the discharge version additionally offers a strobe effect.
