UK/France - Artistic Licence will be exhibiting with French distributor ESL at SIEL 2004 in Paris (1-4 February) on Stand L74 in Hall 5 of the Paris Expo centre. Artistic will be launching the Pixi Range of luminaires and accessories, showing two new products from the range: Pixi-Led is a self-contained LED luminaire aimed primarily at the architectural lighting market and Pixi-Power is a stand alone power supply designed specifically for the Pixi-Led products.

The concept behind Pixi-Led is the ability to create a fusion of lighting and video allowing designers to achieve an almost limitless combination of effects. Lebanon - With a level of passion that one only finds in the Middle East - a passion that heard one fan shout to their favorite semi-finalist: "With our blood and souls, we sacrifice for you Melhem," Pop Idol fever has swept the Arab world. USA / India / Nigeria - Sussex-based LM Productions report a string of recent international projects. Firstly, continuing its 'Live It, Love It' campaign, the Hong Kong Tourism Board contracted LM Productions LLP for their first StratoFantasia event in the USA. The event took place in San Francisco over two days with the main focal point of the multimedia show being LM Productions 50ft (15m) diameter StratoSphere, with a new internal blackout dome, which allows the StratoSphere to be used as a venue with internal projection during the day. This is made possible by the blackout dome being inflated inside the StratoSphere, thus providing a cover from the light outside. The event contained elements of live performances from musicians and dancers as well as full dome video and laser effects inside the StratoSphere. There was a steady stream of people viewing the shows, which started e

UK - Birmingham based glowshop.com announced the launch of their brand new range of 'invisible paints' - white in colour, translucent when dry, they are invisible until exposed to UV blacklight, when they will glow brightly in vibrant colours of blue, yellow, red, green and orange. (The artist paints under UV blacklight).

These innovative photo luminescent materials enable the production of UV special effects artwork including trompe-l'oeil and 3D. Dual Images can be created like day to night scenes created using a combination of conventional and invisible/UV revealing paints. Under normal light the viewer sees the day scene, the nighttime equivalent appearing when the image is exposed to UV blacklight. Applications range from the obvious to the not so obvious some including special effects, scenic effects and promotion and advertising.

The paint is a quick drying, matt finish

Northen gained credit as the first lighting designer in the British theatre to receive billing as such in Gielgud's 1950 Kin

John Wilkinson OBE, chairman of Salford Rugby League Club, owns the 700-capacity venue and although sited adjacently, the two are run as completely different enterprises. The Willows has recently invested substantially in the latest production technology.

As the name implies, 'variety' was the operative word when it came to looking for new lighting. They needed a rig that could deal with every type of performance, from comedians, magicians and single performers to duos, dance troupes and large live bands of all genres - and that could also double as a disco/dancefloor system. The venue's general manager Dave Bell and lighting technician/o

UK - In one busy period over the Christmas break - a schedule designed to minimize the disruption - three London sites received substantial updates and upgrades to their dimming and lighting infrastructure provided by White Light Projects.

The Royal Academy of Music's Sir Jack Lyons Theatre is a versatile 200-seat venue used for opera and musical theatre productions and also as a teaching room. Discussions between the theatre's technician Jake Wiltshire and White Light's technical sales manager Roger Hennigan led to a project that involved installing 144 ways of ETC Sensor dimming, new Andolite outlet boxes on the flyfloor and at stage level featuring both Socapex and 15A outlets, and new internally wired bars overhead, these now ladderbeam-style for added rigidity. The plugging boxes and internally wired bars also carry Ethercon outlets for distribution of Ethernet lighting dat

New Zealand - The new Pacific Followspot from Selecon delivers the same cool beam and incorporates all the other operational advantages of Selecon's Pacific heat management technology. Ideal for smaller theatres, schools, churches and clubs, one of the many benefits of the compact followspot is the ability to choose from a wide variety of light sources to meet differing throw requirements.

For example, the Pacific Followspot is efficient in the smallest school drama room or rehearsal space using the regular 600W tungsten halogen lamp (1000 lux at 18.5m) as it is in a medium-sized theatre, using the 80V Power System (1000 lux at 23m). It can also deliver the output necessary for a church or auditorium using the MSR hot restrike 575W lamp (1000 lux at 39m) with its flicker-free operation. Other lamp choices are the 800W tungsten halogen (1000 lux at 20m) and the 1000W tungsten hal

UK - Entec Sound & Light supplied a full lighting and sound production package for "East Meets West" 2004. The event was a variety show extravaganza staged at the Carling Apollo Hammersmith, and performed by students from Imperial College Indian Society.

The show featured dance and music - from rap to classical Indian - plus various fusions and theatrical performance. Lighting designer Andrew Keighley, an Entec regular, lit the event for the second year running, and with no stage set apart from some basic props, the visual impact was all down to the application of lights.

He chose a series of simplistic, bold and colourful looks that were ideal for mixing and matching for quick and effective improvisational techniques. There was no time for a full rehearsal or run though, and for lighting in particular, this meant a heavy reliance on Keighley's intuition and busking

UK - The Swan Theatre in Stratford upon Avon, part of the Royal Shakespeare Company, has recently purchased nine Vari*Lite VL1000 Tungsten Profiles. The units will hang inside the Elizabethan-style space as a permanent addition to the lighting rig.

Lighting supervisor Wayne Dowdeswell, who chose the VL1000 units commented: "They offer a broad appeal for us, not only as versatile specials but for more delicate moving effects. The VL1000TS luminaires have already been used in a number of productions by the RSC but these are the first units they have purchased. Wayne continued: "They offer astounding value at present which was a key factor in our decision."

UK - London's fabric nightclub has completed major upgrades to its sound and lighting systems. Key to the lighting installation is a package from Coemar UK and its sister company, Lighting Effects Distribution. Coemar iSpot 575 moving heads, iCyc 250s, ProSpot 250s and a variety of LED-based products have been utilized in Rooms 1, 2 and 3 as a result of a new design from Dave Parry's technology team at the club.

The new equipment is predominantly for Room 2. "The room is essentially a black box, but I wanted to put a bit more focus onto the lasers," said Parry. "The room contains a massive block of colour and we've used Coemar iCyc 250s as an architectural backdrop."

The club has also used six Thomas PixelPar 87s from Lighting Effects Distribution to highlight the structural arches, along with a pair of Coemar iSpot 575s and a CF7 as a centrepiece effect. P

UK / USA - When L&SI Online revealed in January that six key members of the Flying Pig Systems team had resigned from the company - including FPS co-founder and Wholehog designer Nick Archdale and product manager Richard Mead - it triggered a spate of rumours across the industry about the fate of High End Systems' European HQ, and of its flagship control product, the Wholehog III.

UK - Software provider Stardraw.com has announced the availability of downloadable demos from its website, a move that coincides with the launch of their newest application, Stardraw A/V Lite.

The demos work exactly like the full version software for 30 days from installation, but rather than having to wait for and install from a CD, you can download the application of your choice from the website in just a few minutes. According to Stardraw marketing director Rob Robinson explains: "This is a logical step that offers clear advantages, the age of software distribution by physical media is coming to an end. Italy - Renowned for its cheese and ham, the Italian city of Parma also boasts the Farnese - the largest baroque theatre existing inside a building. Built in 1618, this was also the first theatre in the world designed for use with movable scenery and with a proscenium arch.

This historic venue recently hosted an Italian version of Elizabethan dramatist John Ford's 'Tis a pity she's a whore (pictured), directed by Luca Ronconi. The show's lighting designer is Guido Levi, who has worked with directors such as Warner Herzog and Jonathan Miller.

The Farnese's steeply-tiered U-shaped seating influenced later theatre design, but this, combined with the fact that it's built almost entirely in wood and stucco, compelled Levi to run a series of strict tests on moving head fixtures, as the 3,500-seat venue's problematic acoustics amplified any noise from fixture motors. Levi selected S
