UK - A regional meeting of the Association of Lighting Designers (ALD) is to be held at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama on Wednesday the 22 January between 5.30 and 8.00pm. The Conference Room in the Alexander Gibson Opera School has been booked and the meeting is being hosted by David Ripley, the Academy production manager and ALD member. USA - The long-anticipated option to upgrade from halogen lamps to LEDs has arrived, thanks to a new speciality coloured LED lamp launched by OptiLED. Bernadette Olson at San Francisco-based Laser Reflections was one of the first in line to upgrade. Within a week of seeing the new lamps at Lighting Dimensions International (LDI) in November 2002, Bernadette had replaced 50W halogen spotlights at the Laser Reflections gallery with 2W LEDs.

The major benefits to the gallery, the world's most advanced holographic imaging studio, are three-fold: power consumption has been reduced from 750W to 30W, so reducing costs; the light output is confined to a narrow band, giving improved contrast and superior visual quality; and the long-life element means there'll be no need to replace them for about 20 years. Olson sees the launch of CHIP lamps as an exciting development, suggesting that th

The concert, called Now Or Never Live, was put together by Anant Singh's Videovision Entertainment and Amitabh Bachchan, Indian cinema's biggest star.

Gearhouse Durban was awarded the contract to provide all the technical aspects of the show. Aside from the massive stage, and three enormous screens, the Gearhouse team managed the technical requirements of live singers, a band of 18 musicians (on a raised platform on the stage), dancers and chorus singers as well as the retinue of stars. The concert aimed to convey that sense of Bollywood opulence and extravagance and the Gearhouse team had to not only create this opulent stag

Denmark - Martin Architectural continues to expand its line of interior colour-changing products with the introduction of the Cyclo series, a range of tubular washlights featuring RGB colour mixing or colour correction control.

The Cyclo is a surface-mounted fixture with a slim design. Designed for use in cove lighting, perimeter lighting, light walls, or behind semi-transparent materials and space where room is restricted, Cyclo comes in three varieties. Cyclo 02 is a fluorescent colour temperature changer which can recreate natural fluctuations in daylight. The smallest in the series, it consists of two dimmable T5 tubes, a warm white at 2700K and a daylight white at 6000K.

By adjusting the relative intensity levels of the two tubes, any colour temperature between the two extremes can be generated to create smooth transitions between warmer and cooler tones. Cyclo 02 can be

Ireland - Bandit Lites recently completed what it hopes will be the start of a long-term relationship with The Irish Tenors. The three singers recently completed a number of highly successful performances at Odyssey Arena in Belfast and at the Point Arena in Dublin.

Although Bandit Lites has an office in Dublin, the shows were handled by its UK arm. "The Dublin office was so busy with work, that we asked the UK office to pitch in on this one," explained Bandit's Phay MacMahon. Production managing the events was Harry Tucker, with the lighting designed by Steve Fallon, and the Bandit crew consisting of Stephen 'Nipper' Fitch as crew chief and Jim Allison as moving light technician. The equipment consisted of an expansive three truss system, stacked with High X Spots, Studio Beams and PCs, and Studio Color 575s controlled by a Wholehog II desk.

UK - At a time when the IT sector as a whole is experiencing a marked downturn, indeed, even industry giants such as IBM and Sun Microsystems are reporting reduced profits and scaling back their predictions for next year - Stardraw has announced a staggering 55% growth in sales of its traditional shrink-wrapped range (namely Stardraw Audio, Stardraw AV, Stardraw Radio, Stardraw Lighting 2D and Stardraw Professional) over the last 12 months.

Stardraw marketing director Rob Robinson is understandably pleased: "Annual growth of 55% is a considerable achievement under any circumstances, particularly as it represents almost three times the growth rate we achieved in the preceding period, but against the backdrop of the slowdown currently being experienced within the IT and entertainment technology sector, it is especially gratifying. It proves that we are on the right track with

USA - Club Nero, the hot nightspot at Caesar's, Lake Tahoe, keeps its patrons buzzing 365 nights a year. Techno and House music, Go-Go dancers and a laser light show have made this Lake Tahoe's premier nightclub. When Adam Camp of Neu Visions Design was looking for some LED accent lighting, he visited LDI 2002 in Las Vegas, looking for a cost-effective, simple lamp replacement with colour LED sources that didn't need a separate controller, power supply or transformer. The only lamp he saw with all the requirements he was looking for was the new CHIP series lamp, launched at LDI by OptiLED.

Neu Visions Design has now installed OptiLED CHIP lamps in down-lighting bars, to up-light glass tables and edge-light acrylic. "A great attribute is variable voltage," said Camp, "but probably the best feature of this simple unit is the variable lens configuration, which allows

USA - American DJ has launched two new lighting effects for the DJ and clubs markets. The Roller Tron and Scan Tron are 2-in-1 special effects featuring a removable X-Y mirror head. This innovative and easy-to-use feature allows each effect to quickly convert from a scanner to a colour changer.

With the X-Y head on, the units function as scanners which make broad, sweeping movements across the dance floor. With the head off, the motion stops and the unit creates colour-changing beams. As a colour changer, each effect can be used with one of 14 gobo patterns or with the 'spot' gobo to produce 11 different colored spotlights (plus white) with no pattern.

With their unique ability to transform from a scanner into a colour changer, the highly affordable Roller Tron and Scan Tron fill a huge need in today's lighting effects market, say Amercian DJ. "Many clubs now have both li

UK - The latest pop musical to arrive on the West End stage is Our House, written by Tim Firth and featuring the music of eighties legends Madness. Mike Mann reports . . .

Despite the complexity of the flying manoeuvres (and AVW's heavy workload elsewhere in Europe during the fit-up), Brown reports that the system went in smoothly, and has coped well with the demands of a fast-moving show. "We did a lot of work with Delstar who provided the mechanical engineering. Although we have AVW control at the National Theatre, this is the first time that Impressario Advance! has been in the West End, and it's being used to control several moves with motors running at full speed."

The Impressario Advance is the second generation of theatre controllers from AVW, and was launched just prior to the show's opening. Based on the original Impressario product, the new system adds seve
