For the filming of ‘Chicago,’ Miramax's reconceived film version of Bob Fosse's hit Broadway musical, director Rob Marshall called on two of the renowned theatrical lighting designers - Peggy Eisenhauer and Jules Fisher - to light the musical numbers. To light the film's detail-specific musical fantasy sequences and transitions, they chose Vari*Lite Series 2000 automated luminaries.

"The central core concept is that the musical numbers take place in different theatrical environments," Eisenhauer explained. "There is a contrast between the real-time scenes and the 'fantasy' musical numbers. All of the lighting in the film was achieved in a wonderful collaboration with the Cinematographer, Dion Beebe. In addition to lighting the musical numbers Jules and I collaborated with Beebe on many of the transitions between reality and fantasy."

Beijing Bei Ao Grand Cultural & Sports Events Company of China cooperated with Martin Professional recently in providing a large number of intelligent lights for the ‘928’ Beijing Concert. The ‘928’ concert featured the foremost singers of the year from China, Hong Kong and Taiwan. Aside from the lighting system, Bei Ao was also responsible for the entire production for the concert, including sound and staging. The event was very successful and received a rapturous response from both the audience and the media.

With a 50,000-strong audience at the Beijing Worker's Stadium, Bei Ao used more than a hundred of Martin’s MAC series moving head fixtures, including MAC 2000, MAC 500 and MAC 600s, hung on the curved trussing system above stage and projecting innumerable changes of lighting and patterns onto the stage and set.

Coe-tech/Robe UK, exclusive UK distributors for the fast growing Czech moving light brand Robe, has supplied Dublin-based distribution company Aquarius with a large quantity of Robe intelligent lighting fixtures for Lacey’s, a 1500 capacity club at the Carrickdale Hotel, Dundalk, Republic of Ireland.

This is the first Robe installation in Ireland since Northampton-based Coe-tech took on the UK and Irish distribution in July this year. The lighting rig for the newly revamped club was designed by Wayne Winstanley and installed by the Carrickdale’s own technical team led by Brian O’Keeffe. The space consists of a large, single multi-purpose room that’s also utilized as a Sunday carvery and occasional restaurant. It is also used as a venue for a miscellany of events including business conferences and weddings - and the lighting scheme was required to be as versatile

ESTA (the Entertainment Services and Technology Association) presented its 2002 Eva Swan Award to Bill Groener, north-east regional vice-president of PRG, for his remarkable service to the Association over many years. The award was presented at ESTA’s Annual Dinner on Thursday, 17 October in Las Vegas, Nevada, during the LDI show.

The Eva Swan Award is presented to a member who has contributed exceptional efforts in time, expertise and personal resources on behalf of ESTA and who has been instrumental in shaping and promoting the direction of the Association. On 19 October at a press conference held during the LDI show in Las Vegas, Martin Professional’s US subsidiary, Martin Professional Inc, presented its second annual Intelligent Lighting Technology Grant.

The company’s CEO, Troels Volver, presented the 2002 Grant to the University of Nevada Las Vegas (UNLV) Department of Theatre. On hand to accept the award on behalf of the university was Brackley Frayer, lighting designer and head of design/technology at UNLV. "The Grant will allow UNLV to teach students with state-of-the-art equipment and help to establish an Entertainment Engineering programme," he stated after the presentation. "Las Vegas is the centre for entertainment technology, thus we need our students involved in all aspects of lighting."

Eric Hanson has joined PRG as the director of business development, based in Chicago. Jere Harris, chairman and CEO of the Group, has welcomed the appointment: "Eric brings to PRG a wealth of experience serving trade show and corporate event clients. PRG currently serves a lot of trade show clients in that market, but we believe we have many additional opportunities for growth there. Eric will be leading our growth efforts." Lighting companies trading on the Internet are being warned to keep a watchful eye after a number of businesses in the industry have seen their Internet traffic unlawfully directed to a rival’s website.

The warning comes from commercial law firm, Taylors, who successfully helped a leading Lancashire-based lighting manufacturer win a legal battle against their competitor who had unlawfully placed meta tags on their website so that customers searching for their rival’s products would be directed instead to their own. Further investigations by intellectual property lawyers at Taylors also revealed that the website contained 15 meta tags for other rivals’ sites.

Now fewer than 300 Arrisun Event 575 Daylight Pars were on duty at the British International Motor Show - all hired by north-east London-based Static Light. Some 200 of these were featured on the spectacular Vauxhall stand - mounted on 50 x 50 GP truss to create a dramatic effect in front of a Dataton Watchout soft-blend backdrop.

The ballasts - power factor corrected, dimmable, and controllable via DMX - were stacked in groups of three in specially made 19" racks. Andrew Mama, a director of Static Light, said that Marshall Design, who designed the Vauxhall display, had insisted on using Arri. "These are ideal for motor shows because of their fast set-up, advanced optics and the fact they have a dichroic glass reflector behind the light. This produces an even field of light - rather than the polished aluminium which degrades quickly."

A year after the devastating events of 11 September, 2001, light is gleaming again in the Winter Garden, the centrepiece public space of the World Financial Center complex. The vaulted glass atrium was severely damaged during the collapse of the towers, and the lighting system, including speciality entertainment luminaires and architectural-control functionality, was destroyed. Miraculously, people were evacuated in time to prevent injuries. As part of the $50m renovation, a new glass façade archway has replaced the footbridge which led to the World Trade Center. i-vision has launched the I-Vex Flagstaff - an illuminated flagpole which embraces a broad spectrum of applications including the architectural, retail, corporate branding and events markets. The I-Vex is currently available in three different versions: as a wall-mounted pole, as a standard upright flagpole or as a mobile upright flagpole.

Variations in height can be achieved, but currently, the three standard lengths for the wall versions are 1.3, 2.3 and 3 metres. The uprights are available in three standard sizes - 4, 6 and 9 metres - and the mobiles come in 4 and 6 metre heights. Contracted by Unusual Services, Fourth Phase London has paid yet another visit to the Royal Albert Hall. As the lights went down on Wednesday 16 October, the London landmark became the venue for 'Whip Craic', an evening of music from the worlds of rock, pop, classical, opera, comedy and theatre hosted by the Countryside Alliance.

The Countryside Alliance promotes the interests of rural people, including all countryside pursuits and field sports, sensible wildlife management and wider countryside concerns such as employment and environments. As all of the £200,000 raised by this event will be used to support the organisation's work, it was essential that the evening of music and entertainment made an impact on the audience.

Australian company Jands Electronics, the well-known manufacturer of a leading range of lighting consoles and dimmers for the entertainment industry, is the latest manufacturer to join the Art-Net Alliance. The purpose of the Alliance is to promote the wide-spread adoption of the Art-Net Ethernet Standard. The Art-Net Alliance with the inclusion of Jands is now truly a global network.

From their Australian base Jands supports a global customer network. "Supporting Art-Net will ensure that we maintain our position as a supplier of leading edge products. Martin Professional has announced that Claus Puggaard, managing director of Martin UK, is to step down from his position and return to Denmark to take over a new challenge within the Martin Group, following the completion of a three-year restructuring process in the UK. The company has also stated that chief financial officer, Johan Delfs, has stepped down "in order to assure a long-term management solution at Martin Professional Plc."

Selecon and Rosco held a hands-on open day at the end of October at RADA’s new premises in London. Members of the ALD, STLD and PLASA were invited to have a closer look at the newer products that were launched at this year’s PLASA Show.

Amongst these was the Finelite II projector which was used to project images in the theatre at RADA, thus demonstrating the potential for this product. Also on show was the new dowser for use with Selecon’s MSR Pacific - well received by those in attendance who see it as a key development in lighting control. Rosco demonstrated its award-winning ImagePro: attached to a Selecon Pacific, it provided food for thought for those wanting to use gobos but not wanting to have the high costs associated with glass gobos.

The Italian fashion show Moda in Villa took place in early September. The event, organized by Uniontessile and Unionorafi of Apindustria, Vicenza, was staged at the Villa Cordellina Lombardi in Montecchio Maggiore (one of the most prestigious Vicentine villas with frescoes by Tiepolo), and previewed not only this winter’s fashions, but jewellery that was to be later presented at Orogemma 2002.

Eurolites Productions, Ireland’s largest lighting and production rental company, is moving to a new 12,000sq.ft warehouse in Portlaoise, Co Laois. However, it’s going to go down as one of the shortest moves in the history of the industry as the company is literally moving from Unit 3 on John Keyes Business Park to Unit 5. The new unit will provide more space for the company and allow more room for manouevre in the pre-building of full rigs. It will also provide a second loading bay and a separate area for the programming and preparation of moving lights.

Eurolites’ existing 6,000sq.ft building will be retained by the company and will be occupied by Eurolites Sales, the lighting sales division of the company and Martin Professional distributor for Ireland. No sooner had we got the news online that Le Mark had been nominated for the Huntingdonshire Business Spirit of Ingenuity Award than we got a message to say that the company had actually won it. Ruth Bagnal, from The East of England Development Agency, presented the award to the company on Friday 1 November in front of 200 top business people at the Marriott Hotel in Huntingdon.

The Judges selected Le Mark for the new ‘Ingenuity’ award following close scrutiny. The company had proven that following the commercial slow-down which had affected many businesses, Le Mark had "self-invested, innovated and diversified into new business sectors," showing a new level of performance and growth.

Not only a new landmark, but a watermark on the south-western English coast, the National Maritime Museum Cornwall (NMMC) in Falmouth will open its doors to the public for the first time in December 2002.

Designed by award-winning architects Long & Kentish, the magnificent harbourside blends with and enhances its surroundings. The exhibitions within were designed by Land Design Studio with Kevin Theobald of London-based Maurice Brill Lighting Design onboard as lighting designer. Although an unconventional-looking building, the museum is fitted for the most part with conventional exhibition lighting equipment, but for two of the galleries, the Dark Gallery and the Daylit Gallery, more sophisticated lighting systems were needed.

The Dark Gallery required a control system capable of co-ordinating the lighting with an AV system, so Theobald specified an ETC Express 250 Lighting Playback
