In line with the increasing use of video projection in theatrical productions, together with the development of products such as High End’s Catalyst, DHA has put its vast knowledge and experience behind a new company, Scene Change.

Officially launched at this year’s PLASA, Scene Change has been a year in development: housed in a purpose-built studio at Waterloo Road in London, the company will employ state-of-the-art equipment in the design and creation of original digital video content specifically for projection. As a market leader in gobo and slide projection, DHA’s expertise in this area will prove invaluable.

Scene Change unites two market sectors - entertainment technology and video projection, but developments in these sectors are by no means in sync. The video industry has developed at a faster rate than entertainment technology and video clips are being u

Acme, from Taiwan, showed its £50/50W moving lights for mobile and bedroom DJs, and the new Penguin scanning moonflower-type effects. Its Spot Queen moving head was also featured, complete with HTI discharge lamp, which can be run on six DMX channels or as a stand-alone unit.

Antari, the smoke machine company from the Far East, appointed Coemar UK as its distributor just prior to the show and, shortly afterwards, Jon Petts, previously synonymous with JEM, crossed the wire. Consequently, we can look forward to some interesting developments from that camp in the years to come. Right now it has a broad range of smoke machines for many applications, mostly entry level units. However, the new ‘X range’ includes four models - three foggers and a Fazer. The X310 Fazer is everything from hazer to fogger, hence the name. Three sizes of fogger feature in this range, these being the

Never known to turn down a challenge, the White Light Group chose one of the busiest weeks of the year - immediately after supplying 10 stands-worth of equipment to the PLASA Show, running its own stand at PLASA and loading out the rigs for several West End shows including Contact and Our House - to hold an Open Day at their headquarters in Wimbledon, south-west London. The reason? To mark the first anniversary of the move to the new building.

For visitors who hadn’t previously made it to Wimbledon, the Open Day allowed White Light to demonstrate its greatly expanded facilities and improved access; those who had already been were able to see how the office and warehouse facilities had been fine-tuned over the first year, and to inspect the newly-finished demonstration area. Visitors were also able to play with the very latest lighting products, many making their fir

No stone has been left unturned to bring you the most comprehensive insight into everything that took place at Earls Court 1 in September.

Abstract, winner of the Best Large Stand award for its atmospheric club environment, showed the new VRX bar scanner fixture, which is wall-mounting - obviating the need for any complicated or obtrusive rigging. Its motorized mirror, which flips round and up-lights by day, skews round to emit from the front (or side) by night. Abstract also showed its light screens, which have a mirror finish when off, and any of 10 different colours when illuminated. There’s been a revolution at AC Lighting: they’re now applying their unique expertise to handling audio equipment. AC Audio lists over 50 leading brands, and it will be interesting to see how this affects the traditional audio dealer establishment. On the lighting side, there were two signi

DHA's years of experience in the field of image projection have enabled the development of a unique custom slide service, to complement its existing service offering specialist large-format slides and its extensive custom and catalogue gobo services.

"Responding to the success of Rosco's Image Pro (I-Pro) gobo slide projector," said managing director Diane Grant. "September sees the introduction of three new types of custom-made mounted slides, developed specifically with the I-Pro in mind. Producer Harley Medcalf and the Australian production team responsible for ‘Barry Humphries: A Night With Dame Edna’ was interested in creating a very special effect for this latest comedy tour. The production, which opened in Miami on 10 September, required a 30ft x 30ft backdrop, which was completely white for the purposes of the lighting designer. An assortment of coloured lighting, automated lighting and projections were to be directed at the drop. The drop also had to be durable, lightweight and manageable for extensive touring and ease of set-up and strike. In addition to these standards, the production team wanted the white backdrop to transform to a photo-realistic portrait of Dame Edna on cue! Realizing that there is only one studio that could deliver all of these effects, Harley contacted LA-based UV/FX Scenic Productions. The result proved to be breathtaking.

All eyes were on Hyde Park this July for the annual Party in the Park, the largest single day event in Europe, watched live by 100,000 people.

Now in its fifth year, the Capital Radio Party in the Park had an impressive line up of acts from around the globe, including Westlife, Shakira, Enrique, Natalie Imbruglia and Will Young, and the Prince’s Trust show sold out 100,000 tickets in just over four hours, in the process raising a huge sum for the charity.

"This year’s production infrastructure included several new products or procedures introduced by suppliers to build on our experience as a team over previous years," said Probyn. "The relaxed nature of the

In what can only be described as a milestone event, the Professional Lighting & Sound Association (PLASA) has cause to celebrate after recording one of the most successful shows in its 25-year history. PLASA's annual show confirmed its status once again as the leading international trade show for the entertainment, communications and presentation technology industries, as more than 400 companies from across the globe filled the Earls Court Exhibition Centre in London from 8-11 September, 2002.

13,810 people (subject to ABC Audit), up by 4.2 per cent from last year, visited the PLASA Show to see the array of new product launches, attend the Masterclass Programme, network with industry colleagues and strike up new business relationships. PLASA managing director, Matthew Griffiths, said the show bucked the exhibition industry’s recent downward trend as many exhibitors conducted good

More than 250 years old, The Royal Danish Theatre is located in the heart of Copenhagen and also houses the Royal Opera and Ballet.

Nylin detailed his technical requirements, to ETC’s distributor Bico Professionel A/S, who came up with the perfect solution. "As the theatre’s staff were already using Expression and WYSIWYG, Emphasis was the next logical step, providing a seamless fusi

Coemar UK has taken on the UK distribution for Hungarian strobe giants Hungaroflash. According to Coemar UK managing director, Ian Kirby, this is a direct result of having supplied (via Vari-Lite) five of Hungaroflash’s massive T-Light 85K strobes for use on the Rolling Stones’ world tour.

One of the competitive advantages of T-Light - the latest product from the Budapest-based company - is that it can be purchased outright, rather than being restricted to hire use only. Requiring 63A/230V mains power supply, control is either in the form of the pre-programmed lightning strikes, or it can be created by the operator in the T-Light dedicated controller.

The lamp is low pressure non-explosive xenon - offering a flash length ranging from 1/24-sec to 3-sec - and the beam angle can be varied from spot to wide angle. Barn doors and colour filters are optional extras. The unit ha

After embarking on a successful new line-up of lighting fixtures over the past 12 months, Coemar has now turned its attention to developing a range of unique tools that will become a vital part of every lighting operator’s tool kit. The DR-1 is a remote device which virtually eliminates the need to gain access to fixtures when programming or servicing lighting equipment. This diagnostic instrument allows the functions (and history) of a fixture to be monitored and interrogated from anywhere in a venue. Offering bi-directional communication with the fixtures (which ‘talk back’ to the device over a normal 3-core DMX cable), when inserted into the DMX 512A chain, the DR-1 will replicate all functions and information, which until now were accessed only via a fixture’s on-board display panel.

A single DR-1, for instance, will allow the operator to remote access as ma

Architectural lighting specialists i-vision were approached by international property consultants KingSturge, to design a lighting scheme for the Eastgate Centre in Cardiff. The newly refurbished Centre is a large office complex in the heart of vibrant, downtown Cardiff. It's off-beat 1970's styling comes from four, different sized flat-fronted, conjoined blocks, bordered by roads on all four sides, giving the Eastgate Centre a high profile.

The main façade of the building is constructed of brick with long runs of windows along each floor. However KingSturge has been progressive in the re-fit of the building, adding a glass stairwell to the exterior and a new entrance canopy. These new features, together with the overall re-fit, have greatly improved both the architecture and the working environment. The lighting scheme of i-vision's Geoff Jones is intended to transform Eastgate House

On the evening of 4 September, the curtain was raised on Phantom of the Opera at Madrid's Teatro Lope de Vega, with creator Lord Lloyd Webber himself amid the opening night audience. Fourth Phase was successful following a competitive tender process in supplying a replica of the lighting rig that appears in the original London West End production - all at very short notice! Contracted to supply the entire lighting spec, Fourth Phase was given two weeks in which to send substantial quantities of equipment to Spain, from dimmers to lanterns, followspots and cables.

Re-creating Andy Bridge's West End design was the show's associate lighting designer Michael Odam, who had to work around the limitations of the Spanish theatre: "We lost 1.5m of electric flying space on the grid as a result of the depth of the stage. In the original Phantom production Digital Light Curtains play
