The National Botanic Garden of Wales in Carmarthen offers visitors a view of botany through the years. L&SI looks at the AV installation.

The National Botanic Gardens, officially opened in 2000, was a hugely ambitious project and the first of its kind for nearly 200 years. The Gardens are set in the Middleton Estate - 586 acres of landscaped park set against the stunning Welsh landscape. It has varied topography, a variety of water features offering diverse aquatic habitats, a range of microclimates, rich wildlife, established woodland and, amazingly in the present day, is virtually free from pollution.

Response to the project has been highly positive - during the first year, the Garden attracted over 250,000 visitors. It boasts the largest glasshouse in Europe, designed by architects Norman Foster and Partners to mirror the contours of the surrounding hills. The Theatre Botanica, a

Andy Ciddor profiles the New Zealand-based lighting manufacturer . . .

If you were setting out to establish an innovative luminaire company, it is unlikely that you would choose to site it in a country with only a handful of professional theatres, and strategically located over 10,000 kilometres from its major markets. Yet that is precisely the situation in New Zealand, the base from which Selecon has launched its international success. It has turned what ought to have been disadvantages in its location into major strengths.

Selecon luminaires can be found in places as disparate as the Opera Bastille in Paris, the Royal Tyrell Museum in Alberta, Canada, Boston Catholic Television, the Grand Theatre in Blackpool, the Sydney Opera House and Santa Monica High School in California. The broad range of products it produces, includes families of fresnels, PC spots, fixed, zoom and condenso

Although the news may have passed you by at the time, Guildhall Yard in London wrote itself into the history books in 1998 following the discovery, by archaeologists, of a Roman Amphitheatre at the site.

Since then, the remains have been kept under lock and key while a major feat of engineering suspended them in situ between the floors of the Guildhall Art Gallery. The painstaking and lengthy restoration process - costing £1.3million - revealed an arena that was oval in shape and approximately 100m long by 80m wide.

It’s believed that the Amphitheatre was first built in 70AD and would have been the setting for gladiatorial fights, executions and a range of activities, many of them more bizarre, cruel and horrific than anything Hollywood has ever dreamt up. Animal bones, including those of a bear, have been found, as well as remains of a timber drainage system used to carry a

Elstree Light & Power (ELP) has acquired the Film and TV assets of Playlight Hire Ltd in administrative receivership. All current contracts and ongoing work will continue un-interrupted operated by Elstree Light & Power. All crew employed by Playlight on these contracts will be retained to ensure continuity.

The administrative receivers hand over to ELP today, and from now on all transactions will be handled by ELP. This acquisition significantly strengthens the ELP equipment stock and product range. In particular by the addition of two Twin Generator trucks, one being 2 x 140kW and the second being 2 x 200kW. With the exception of the twin generators, all Playlight Hire stock will be withdrawn from service pending thorough overhaul and testing. Existing ELP stock will be supplied in the meantime. Bright Lighting, a developer and manufacturer of LED lighting effects, announced today that it has changed its name to Pixeon. According to Nils Thorjussen: "Pixeon is short for pixilated neon-which is exactly what our debut product, Color Stream, looks like. We want a name that better reflects what we do. At this early stage of our company, we don't expect much confusion resulting from this change." Thorjussen continues: "But most importantly, I want an e-mail address that takes less time to write!"

Color Stream is a dynamic LED lighting effect, which recently received an Award for Design Excellence at the recent PLASA show in London. Each fixture contains a dense array of red, green, and blue LEDs arranged in individual pixels. Each pixel is controlled separately to produce dynamic movement along the tube.

The Finnish National Theatre has been a venue for Finnish culture and the people of Helsinki since 1872. The historic theatre has four stages - the Main Stage, the Small Stage, Willensauna and Omapohja, with the Main Stage recently being completely rebuilt from lighting systems to stage machinery and audio/video systems. All of the stage lighting was supplied and installed by Selecon’s exclusive distributor in Finland, Manex Yhtiot Oy Foki. The Main Stage rig now has 30 Arena Theatre Fresnels 2500W, eight Pacific 80V 1200W profiles, two Performer Quartz Followspots, 12 Aurora 4-way Cycs, and four Aurora 4-way Groundrows to complement the existing Selecon stock of Acclaim and 1200 Fresnels and PCs.

James Thomas Engineering’s new Pixelrange series of LED lighting fixtures now qualifies as an energy-efficient approved product, qualifying for the government’s Enhanced Capital Allowance (ECA) Scheme. This will bring massive financial benefits to anyone investing in these specific LED products. The first three Pixelrange products were launched last month at PLASA 2002 - the Pixelpar 660, Pixelpar 87 and Pixeline 1044 batten - and all qualify under the ECA Scheme.

Under the Scheme, expenditure on approved technologies and products can qualify for 100%, up-front tax relief, delivering a significant cash-flow boost and shortening the payback period on the investment. In addition to this initial financial incentive, anyone buying products from the Pixelrange will enjoy the long-term benefits of the LED technology - with its long lamp life, low power consumption, low maintenanc

For the eighth year running, Entec supplied the lighting production for LD Mike 'Sooty' Sutcliffe at the National TV Awards, staged at the Royal Albert Hall, presented by Sir Trevor MacDonald, and broadcast live on ITV. Entec's client was production company Indigo Television. They worked closely with production manager Ruth Tester-Brown and Mike Sutcliffe to ensure the lighting fit up went like clockwork.

Sutcliffe chose a large palette of moving lights, including nearly 50 Vari*Lite 2202s and 2402s, 11 Clay Paky Stage Zoom 1200s and 12 Stage Scans as well as Martin MAC 300s, 500s and 33 MAC 600s. Stardraw has introduced ‘Rubber-Banding’ as the September Feature of the Month. This much-anticipated upgrade has been under development for many months and represents a significant enhancement to their design and documentation applications.

This major new functionality means that the elements in schematic designs stay connected as you move them within the document. So, if you wish to change the look of your block schematic and move products, either by dragging the selected symbols to their new position, or by nudging them with the arrow keys, the connections follow automatically. Furthermore, Rubber-Banding operates independently of Modifiers (Snap to Grid, Snap to Object, etc.).

This is an extremely important development, says Stardraw’s marketing director, Rob Robinson: "Rubber-Banding has been at the top of our ‘Most Wanted’ list for some time,

Laser Hire’s ‘Lightning Water Fountains’ entertained over 350,000 people assembled in Walsall Arboretum for the annual illuminations this autumn. The first display to stop crowds in their tracks as they entered the Walsall Arboretum was Laser Hire’s water fountain and laser display.

Lasers and coloured lighting were used to bring the ‘lightning water display’ to life. Set to music, Laser Hire used Pangolin software to carefully synchronize the lasers, moving lights, static lights and projections to produce a dynamic, spectacular show.

More recently, following a successful display at the 2001 Showman’s Directory Dinner, Laser Hire exhibited at this year’s Showman’s Show showcasing their services, from large outdoor spectaculars to corporate events and exhibitions. "This show demonstrates our commitment to bringing different

Color Kinetics Inc (CKI) has been awarded its 13th patent (including US and international patents) relating to its line of solid-state lighting technologies for the digital control of LEDs. The new patent includes nearly 50 separate technology claims and covers a wide variety of methods and systems for illuminating materials with colour-controlled LED systems, say CKI.

One aspect of the patent relates to a variety of illumination applications where features of a material - such as a design within an object, or a colour in a sign or graphic - are highlighted by a colour or colours of light. This technique may also be applied to distinguish specific elements in amaterial from their surroundings, such as in machine vision or medical applications. Another aspect of the patent involves providing a positioning system to remotely align LED illumination systems to light a material, much like t

This year marks the debut of the International Festival of Musical Theatre in Cardiff - and White Light is supporting the event by supplying the lighting for the Festival's centrepiece production, Babes in Arms, at the Cardiff New Theatre. The same rig also performed double duty, lighting the Festival's opening Gala Concert.

Faced with the challenges of minimal rigging time, no changeover time between concert and show, little focusing time and two shows to light, lighting designer Neil Austin opted for a largely automated rig featuring 16 Amptown Washlights with beam shuttering and 10 Strand Pirouette PCs with Rainbow scrollers. Neil selected both units because of his preference for working with tungsten light sources, but complemented them with four Martin MAC 500 moving spotlights. Completing the rig were Strand Alto and Cantata fresnels, Par cans, ETC Source Fours, L&E batten

City Theatrical, the New York-based manufacturer of lighting accessories and theatrical products, has donated $500 to Light Relief - the fund set up to by and for the lighting industry, to offer lighting designers and those working within the field, assistance and support with life’s catastrophes. $250 was donated by City Theatrical employees, an amount which the company then matched. Le Maitre are set to stage a spectacular firework and pyrotechnic display from the roof of Harrods to mark the switching on of the Christmas Lights on 3 November. The display will go ahead despite the proposed fire strikes. As the strike is due to start on 2 November for 48 hours, Le Maitre’s events director Karen Haddon has employed private fire crews to cover the event. This will be in addition to the British Army’s Green Goddesses, already covering the strike nationally, and Harrods’ own fire officers stationed on the roof itself. Although it is extremely expensive to bring in private fire engines and crew, ensuring safety at the event is paramount, and the decision to go ahead with the show has been welcomed.

The display is very complex, and will be fired with a pyro digital system. It runs just under 15 minutes and is set to the James Bond theme tune. It will beg
