UK - Every four years, one of the world's largest trade events for the printing and publishing world moves into the NEC. Once again, leading event services company PSL was chosen as joint official AV and IT suppliers to the IPEX 2006 show by organisers IIR Exhibitions.

From its branch location at the NEC near Birmingham, PSL provided plasma screens, TFT monitors, laptops, computers and sound systems to the show.

In addition to individual exhibitors, PSL supplied equipment and crew for the special Innov8 Theatre, where influential CEOs of companies like Hewlett Packard, Heidelberg, Kodak, Xerox and Canon were speaking. Every presentation was filmed so that a compilation of highlights could be made after the show.

PSL Gary Davis explained: "In terms of turnover, IPEX is the single largest exhibition that we've handled through our NEC subsidiary since we formed it in 2001.

Costa Rica - In Latin- America, outdoor festivals create a big draw, and Costa Rica is no exception. Ramon Mendiola, director of the Costa Rica Brewery, recently staged 'The Imperial Festival 2006', which included some of the biggest local, latin and international stars. Names such as Jamiroquai, who headlined day one, Hector el Father, and The Rasmus, performed for the first time in Costa Rica. Day two's headliner Sting added this event to his 2005-2006 Broken Day World Tour.

La Guacima racetrack, just outside San Jose, was host to the two-day concert held on 1-2 April and saw more than 30,000 attendees over the weekend. Sound contractor RSTV Sonido supplied main arrays of 12 Adamson Y18s and four Y10s per side, which provided enough sound pressure to fill La Guacima. The setup was designed by RSTV 's owner Virgilio Azofeifa and techs Elias Arias and ManriI Vargas, using

UK - Entertainment lighting supplier White Light is this year returning to its roots: supporting the Royal Court Theatre, the theatre from which White Light was founded, during the Court's 50th Anniversary Celebrations.

The Royal Court Theatre in London's Sloane Square is Britain's leading theatre company dedicated to new work by innovative writers. The Court's 50th anniversary celebrations are centred around 8 May 2006, fifty years to the day from the 1956 opening of John Osborne's Look Back In Anger, widely judged to be the play that marked the beginning of modern British drama. Since that time, the Court has premiered plays by many writers, who include: Edward Bond, Peter Gill, Christopher Hampton, Athol Fugard, Howard Brenton, Sam Shepard, and Hanif Kureishi.

The Court's influence on theatre design has been equally important, with the theatre leading the way in the

UK - After a four-year gap, Hawthorn has again worked on Pro Retail, this year - the number one retail trade show in the UK, is held at Telford's International Centre. Hawthorn was contracted by DB Systems to provide lighting, sound, rigging, staging, power distribution, starcloth and crew for the two day event.

Hawthorn's project manager, Matt Oscroft specified Clay Paky Alpha Spots and Alpha Wash lights, supplemented with Pulsar's LED Par 36s and Thomas LED battens. For control, he chose an Avolites Sapphire and Irad Pixel drive. In order for Hawthorns to get across their design concepts, Oscroft used their new WYSIWYG suite, providing visuals and complex designs for both DB Systems and the final client, Palmer and Harvey. This software proved to be invaluable as time was limited onsite and there were no space or time for errors.

Oscroft's sound spec included Martin Audio li

Italy - Following a very successful first year, in which business targets for the first two years were exceeded, Star Orbit Italia has moved to larger offices. A total of 35 Star Orbit stages were erected in 2005 around Italy, ranging in size from 12m to 20m spans and extra equipment is currently being manufactured to build up the Italian stocks.

The benefit of the operation was also dramatically demonstrated on Live 8 weekend in 2005, when the UK industry completely ran out of stage roofs. But Star Events Group was able to come to the rescue provide a 20m Orbit system by shipping it over from Italy to the organisers of B-Live on Clapham Common at very short notice.

TC Electronic's press call detailed numerous products about to hit the market. Amongst these was the C300 Dual Stereo Gate/Compressor, a dual engine dynamics processor providing compression/limiting and gate/expansion, and which begins shipping in May. Also from TC, VoiceSolo is a new range of near-field voice monitors, optimized for easy setup with conventional microphone stands and booms. The range consists of the passive VSM-200P monitor, the active VSM-200 monitor, and the active VSM-300. All models are now shipping.

German manufacturer K.M.E. launched two active professional stage monitors, the CLP 320 and CLP 350, to add to its Cluster Series. The CLP 320 is equipped with 12" + 1" neodymium loudspeaker, the CLP 350 with a 15" + 1" speaker combination. Both models have a 350W class D amplifier for high quality audio. Both monitors feature an optimized dispersion, due to the 80° x 60° rotatable horn. The low profile casings are equipped with an angle of 45°.

Apollo Design Technology's Keith Kankovsky and Milad Khouli were in attendance. The company reports that it is now a leading supplier of gobos to European moving light manufacturers - quite an achievement for a company from Indiana, especially considering the abundance of European gobos on offer. They found the show fairly busy, with most interest directed at their high resolution glass and steel patterns, and at the Smart Color scroller. Apollo also experienced strong international interest at this show.

"The Earth is covered largely by water," pointed out Sennheiser's Rolf Meyer, helpfully. "But a much larger area is reliably covered by Sennheiser RF." And with that, cue the introduction of Net 1, the first steps in the company's next generation of RF. Net 1 is a hub for up to 10 Sennheiser wireless systems, but is designed not to render the existing million-or-so channels of Sennheiser RF redundant overnight.

"You can count on Sennheiser RF forever," continued Meyer playfully. "I was recently in an environment that was inaccessible to most of us until the early '90s - where 15 years ago you'd have been shot, in fact, without authorization. But it had a 1036 Sennheiser RF system - deep in the recesses of the Kremlin! I can't tell you how it got there, but when I asked the sound guy if he wanted to upgrade to a newer system he said, 'WhyΩ It wor

Clay Paky always has a major presence at SIB, and this year was no exception. The large stand, with its hands-on demonstrations of its leading Alpha range of moving head luminaires - not to mention its hospitality - was a hive of activity throughout the show. The Alpha range, first introduced at SIB two years previously, now offers lighting designers a choice of 10 units. The latest models added to the range are the Alpha Profile 1200 and the Alpha Wash 1200.

Baldwin Boxall displayed brand new voice alarm products and a new range of microphones, as well as pouring a good pint of real ale at this year's show. Vigil EVAS is a range of DSP controlled voice alarm products, Vigil Eclipse2 is a cost-effective wall-mountable voice alarm or public address system, and BDM400 is a networkable range of paging microphones. If these products are as good as their hospitality is warm, then they are onto a winner.

Look Solutions had several foggers on display with some new products including the Low Fogger, exhibited as a prototype and shipping in a couple of months. The new Unique2 was also featured on the stand.

Studio Due's Graziano Carosi was keen to talk about the company's new factory in China, stressing that the factory, working closely with the company's Italian staff, enabled prices to be reduced whilst quality had remained unchanged. The company presented a new model of the City Color, with 2500 or 1800W of power. A new asymmetric bracket gives the head more inclination, and the unit is IP54-rated. Also presented was the Shark 250 and 150 units as well as the CityLED, which with RGB DMX-controllable LEDs offers a cost-effective graphic solution for architectural applications.

Behringer kicked things off with another 10 new products to add to the 32 launched at NAMM. "We continue to be all about value for money," said Michael Leidel, sales manager for Behringer's European Business Centre, which makes no distinction between pro audio and MI sales channels. "We're still very strong in small mixers and 19" rackmount units, but computer-based recording is the big future for us." Leidel also dismissed the recent news about Behringer being fined $1 million in the US as purely a local issue, with no effect on - or relevance to - European trading conditions. Moving on, then . . .

The team from Pulsar reported a busy show, with lots of "important" people and overseas visitors attending. As seen in the March issue at ARC, the new Chroma Range has just begun shipping and includes: the ChromaBatten 50, ChromaStrip X3 and ChromaBankIP.

MA Lighting's GrandMA products also dominated: grandMA video version 1.28 was released at the show with three new key features - admin, multi-screen preview and soft-edge blending. These new functions, in combination with previously released ones such as four live video inputs, the keystone effect, beam shape effects, and the FOH blind editing function directly from a grandMA console, make grandMA video a powerful tool. www.vari-lite.com www.pulsarlight.com www.lightpower.de

Although RCF also had something to say in conferencing, sales director Fausto Incerti kicked off with a similar plug for its loudspeakers. "This year, with the introduction of the line array, we complete our offerings across all the different marketplaces," he said. "It's an important achievement because in such a short space of time we've completed the lines for fixed installation, for touring and theatre and for conferencing - as well as continuing our transducer developments. This is only the start of the third year of RCF's latest incarnation."

RCF's Forum 6000 is a fully digital congress control system, but will soon gain a bigger brother discussion system - "the most important in this product family," Incerti said. Prototypes were on display, as were new flying, rigging and installation solutions that single out the TT+ (Touring and Theatre) range, i

Hot news on the High End stand was the Studio Command H, which was launching at Frankfurt. High End's Fons de Vreede demonstrated a new 1kW tungsten fixture which will be shipping in a couple of weeks, and hinted at more news to come before PLASA.
