Germany - Berlin's Berghain dance club has wrapped up its first year of operation with a Meyer Sound system in its Panorama Bar.

Installed by Schalldruck of Berlin, the sound system for the relatively intimate (13m x 4.4m) Panorama Bar features a pair of JM-1P loudspeakers in each corner of the dance floor. Visceral bass saturates the space from two hidden stacks of three-each 600-HP subwoofers, while an L-C-R system with three UPA-2P loudspeakers and a 500-HP subwooferprovides DJ monitoring. Both systems are optimized and driven by a Galileo loudspeaker management system with a Galileo 616 processor.

USA - Built in 1850-1852 on land donated by American Revolutionary War General Thomas Sumter, the Church of the Holy Cross is recognised as a National Historic Landmark, with Bavarian-made stained glass windows and one of the few original Henry Erben pipe organs in existence in the United States. The church is the burial site of former US Ambassador Joel Roberts Poinsett, botanist and namesake of the poinsettia.

The church walls were constructed by a technique known as "rammed earth" which creates a structure that is durable and holds excellent thermal characteristics. And in fact the building has survived an earthquake, tornados, and hurricanes. It was termite damage to the wooden parts of the building that ultimately required restoration of the church.

In 1998 the Union of Municipalities of Greek Salento and the Diego Carpitella Institute conceived a festival for Salento's traditional music, pizzica, to take place in several towns in the province of Lecce, the Greek Salento.

Their idea was to organize a large concert in the hellenophone area in which local folk music would mix ad mingle with other musical traditions, thus getting new life and experimenting a different way of composing contemporary music. Through the years that initial conception has evolved and earned its current national and international renown.

UAE - Dubai-based Al Laith Event Services devised a lateral and highly inventive motion control solution for tracking two 30m sections of Lighthouse L7 LED screen across a distance of 140m for the Opening Ceremony of the 2011 IDEX (International Defence) Exhibition. The exhibition was at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre (ADNEC), and Al Laith's client was the OC show producers, RedFilo Events from Abu Dhabi with its headquarters based in Singapore.

The challenge was that the tracking system had to be able to withstand 104km per hour down-currents from helicopters hovering just 40m above - not exactly an everyday requirement, and one that rendered most of the known entertainment automation systems inappropriate.

Students were challenged to produce entries in any of four design categories. The winners in each category (stage design, costume design, poster design and online educational content) will be judged by a team of specialists from the Royal Opera House. Winners will be announced following an afternoon performance of the opera in Covent Garden on Thursday 17 March 2011.

As part of a bid to attract a broader audience, the 12 May event will now be called the Classic Brits. Organisers said the name change "reflects the show's ambition to embrace a more diverse range of music genres including musical theatre". Light Bureau was awarded winner in the Workplace Lighting category for their work at KPMG's new Canary Wharf headquarters project. The judges said of KPMG's space "this is such a fun and stimulating environment that the judges all said that they would like to work there."

UK - Unusual Rigging's work on the Wizard of Oz wasn't just unusually big, it was also unusually heavy. The show uses two scissor lifts in the basement, which weigh in at four tons each, while the steelwork which was installed in the basement to support the set weighs 20 tonnes.

"We went in to the theatre to begin the three week fit-out, installing the mother truss with 40 chain hoists and tracking beams to help get the steelwork into the basement," explains project manager Simon Stone. "But the Royal Variety Show took place half way through, so the production crew for that came in and took possession, laying their show floor over ours for the duration."

The chain hoists and 300ft of truss above the stage enable the set to be flown in and out of place. But, in a theatre as old as the London Palladium, none of the counterweight sets were heavy

It is a 112" display with all the picture quality and brightness of LED, but its lightweight and easy to install properties means it could be hung above the arena with very little infrastructure. Our clients were able to show full motion footage on this incredible large display with the minimum of fuss."

UK - Crawley's Hawth Theatre has installed installation a Yamaha digital mixing system. Opened in 1988, the West Sussex venue offers a lively and diverse programme, featuring over 350 annual performances.

The theatre's facilities include an 855 seat main space, a smaller 146 seat studio space, exhibition space, eight meeting rooms, coffee shop and bistro, two bars and an outdoor marquee and amphitheatre which are used for performances throughout the summer.

A recent technical upgrade has seen a Yamaha M7CL-48ES digital mixing console, together with three SB168-ES stage boxes, purchased for the main theatre.

Supplied by AC Lighting, the system was chosen because of the experiences of the in-house technical crew, led by technical manager Chris Wilcox.

Finland - ETC's Finnish dealer Studiotec has held its fourth annual Congo group training session in Helsinki. Over the course of three days, Oskar Krogell and several colleagues taught 30 people how to programme and run a show, from introduction to advanced level.

"With two students to each desk, users were able to work together while still getting plenty of hands-on time with the desk," says Krogell. "We've held the training around the same time every year since 2007, and it's always been really well received."

USA - AXYS Scope loudspeakers recently made their Broadway debut on Elf the Musical at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre. The musical is based on the 2003 Warner Brothers movie and is the tale of Buddy, a young orphan who mistakenly crawls into Santa's bag of gifts and is transported to the North Pole.

The show boasts some of the best creative in the business. The book is by Thomas Meehan, who won the 2003 Tony Award for co-writing the book for Hairspray. The musical side of the show is take care of by the Matthew Sklar, who received a Tony Award nomination (Best Original Score) and a Drama Desk nomination (Outstanding Music) for his work on The Wedding Singer, and the lyrics are provided by Chad Beguelin, who wrote the lyrics and co-book writer for The Wedding Singer.
