UK - Visual Connection Ltd (VCL) has completed a glittering event in Cardiff, supplying specialist lighting equipment along with planning, design and programming expertise for a spectacular light and video show at the 21st British Academy Cymru Awards.

For the second consecutive year, David Horner of VCL worked closely with lighting director Andy Cottey and lighting gaffer Gafin Riley of NEP Cymru to create a special look for the ceremony, hosted on the night by the The One Show's Alex Jones at the Wales Millennium Centre in Cardiff.

2012 is a momentous year for BAFTA Cymru, which is celebrating its 21st anniversary. With this in mind the lighting team created a high gloss, Hollywood feel for the evening, devising layers of different looks which changed throughout the night to keep up audience interest.

Oman - The Royal Opera House Muscat, which is one of the Middle East's most prestigious arts venues, has made a point of stocking a variety of Vari-Lite luminaires since it opened three years ago. These include VL3500 Wash and Spot plus VL1100 TS and AS luminaires. Davis of Davis Entertainment had the pleasure of christening the new Martin MAC Aura wash light at the Hale Centre Theatre in Gilbert, Arizona, for their first show of the season, The Secret Garden.. The theatre in-the-round space added nine Auras (installed by Clearwing Productions) overhead to allow for colour saturation and isolation.

Jeff A. Davis was the lighting designer hired for the season opener and could not be happier with the choice in fixtures. "Martin did an exceptional job with LED dimming and no colour shift while fading; something fixtures from the competitors can't hold a candle to."

UK - The St James Theatre in London SW1 is the first newly built theatre complex in central London for 30 years. Specifically designed as a smaller, off-Broadway type venue in which to develop shows prior to moving to the West End, the new complex, designed by Foster Wilson Architects, features a main 312-seat theatre and a smaller 100-seat studio theatre as well as a brasserie and lobby bar.

The sound design for both theatres was entrusted to Mathew Smethust-Evans of London-based consultancy firm, Theatreplan, who specified EM Acoustics products throughout.

Smethust-Evans worked closely with the theatre's technical manager, Nick Butler (previously at the New Wimbledon theatre) to ensure that the general philosophies behind the equipment matched his approach. Butler was more than happy with Theatreplan's recommendation of EM Acoustics, having already used the equipment elsewhe

France - It's been a busy summer/autumn for the Uniline Solution rental network, with events and festivals of all types and sizes taking place throughout Europe. One such festival was Jazz à Vannes, now in its 33rd year and an absolute must on the European jazz circuit. The line up this year featured the likes of Marcus Miller, Malia, the Kyle Eastwood Band, the Jacky Terrason Trio and many more.

Rental company and jazz specialists, Studio Sextan, were in charge of the audio requirements for the festival. They supplied an APG Uniline system as the PA for the main stage in the Jardins de Limur complete with a DX Series stage monitor system and two Innovason Sy48 consoles at FoH and monitors.

Germany - This year's water-shows at the Autostadt in Wolfsburg which attracted an audience of 235.000, set a new attendence record. For the first time, they were held in the harbour basin, with the historic Volkswagen power plant as backdrop.

UK - Having been approached once again by Ronin Events to supply audio for the Shakedown Festival at Stanmer Park, Brighton, Capital Sound's Charles Ellery swung into action to provide a Martin Audio system for the event.

"Initially, I was looking at using a mid size Martin Audio LC system," says Ellery, "but I had seen the site plans and I realised we were looking at a different part of Stanmer Park for the Main Stage arena, and an increase from an 8,000 to potentially a 15,000 audience capacity in this arena, so I changed the spec to a large format cabinet with the Martin W8-L."

However, Capital's general manager Paul Timmins suggested to Ellery that he might be able to the company's brand new purchase, the Martin Audio MLA system, for the event.

TheatreCraft is open to anyone between the ages of 17 and 25 and provides a unique glimpse into the behind the scenes world of theatre - from stage management to wig-making, lighting to marketing and writing to designing.

PLASA Skills will be present at the event to give young people advice about getting the skills and experience they need to give them a head start towards an enjoyable career in theatre.

USA - As a key part of the lighting rig for hip-hop artist Drake's Club Paradise Tour, Clay Paky Sharpys are proving how heavenly they are to work with. The fixtures have been selected by lighting designer Patrick Dierson for Drake's European and North American tour in support of his second studio album, Take Care.

Sixty Sharpys form the basis of the touring rigs hung in chevron-like formations above the stage and mounted at 90º angles in the show's iconic ParaCube wall. "The units are used as aerial beam effects, overall stage washes and, as unconventional as it may seem, also key light for several intimate moments in the show," Dierson explains.

UK - Stage Technologies has been contracted by Radiohead production manager Richard Young and Richard Kent of Aerial Rigging Techniques to provide a 60 axis 'pod' system running 12 free flying video screens on the Radiohead tour in Europe, New Zealand and Australia this autumn. Following a well-documented roof collapse earlier in the summer the tour's automation system had to be replaced. Despite being in the midst of its busiest year to date the Stage Technologies rental team created a new bespoke system within 30 days.

Stage Technologies provided control for the band's existing winch system including: 10 AU:tour control racks, a 60 axis system, plus new motor looms racks, desks and programming tools. Each pod in the system contains 4 point hoist winches each lifting a corner of the screen. Each is able to rotate to create multi-dimensional movement within the screens.
