AKG (Harman Pro) gave its new large diaphragm, multi-pattern condenser microphone, the Perception 400, its first European outing at PLASA. The Perception, which features selectable cardioid, omni and figure-eight polar patterns is also equipped with a 10dB pad, bass cut filter and spider shock-mount. The introduction of the 400 completes AKG's range of large diaphragm microphones.

Apollo Design Technology reported an excellent response to the Right Arm (which made its debut at PLASA) - its design enables it to add pan and tilt capabilities to a wide variety of lighting, video, and projection devices up to 40lb. Repositioning previously stationary gear via a console can reduce equipment and labour costs, as well as possible safety hazards, making the Right Arm a good choice for numerous applications. Besides the usual upgrades and tweaks to its existing product lines, Robe Show Lighting introduced three new products - Digital Spot, StageQube 324, and the 700 Series.

StageQube is an LED videowall module, 800mm by 800mm, with an add-on diffusion cover for soft lighting type effects. Modules fit together through tapered spigots, weigh just 20kg and are IP54-rated. No IP address is required - it's done automatically in the software, just daisy-chain power and Cat 5 connectors.Low-resolution VGA input to the Qube software works best; the software can change focus through Gamma control, as well as access all the usual parameters.

Just four years old, and appearing at PLASA for the first time, EM Acoustics (distributed in the UK by Autograph Sales) showed off their new DA1, a single 18" (utilising a Precision Devices driver) sub in a 9ft folded horn capable of reproducing high SPLs down as low as 30Hz, with a recommended upper roll-off at 200Hz.

Sharing the stand was Global 9, another new company to the PLASA show, showing their G9-G series of six installation speakers. Four cabinets are full-range and based variously on 6.5", 8", 12" and 15" drivers; low-end grunt can be added with either the G-212B (2 x 12") or the G218B (2 x 18") dedicated subs.Specialist analogue desk-only manufacturer APB also shared the stand with EM and Global 9. Having showed their prototype Spectra Series console last year, the full production version is now available.

Chevin Research were showing their new range of line level and audio amps on their stand at PLASA. Launched last year at Frankfurt, the S-Series are available in 100, 50 and 70V line configurations, where as theA-Series amps - increasing in power from the A2000 at 1.2kW through to the A6000 rated at 3kW into 2 ohms - were also on show. UK - Marquee Audio have carried out a discrete sound system installation for the new, prestigious Club Bar & Dining, an upscale restaurant and bar in London's Soho, on the site formerly occupied by The Sugar Club.

Situated in Warwick Street, the venue comprises an informal bar and dining room with 80 covers on the ground floor, and a downstairs cocktail lounge bar, with seating available for 100 people.

The operation is a joint venture between successful Soho operator Brenhan Magee, and entrepreneur and Crystal Palace FC chairman Simon Jordan. Magee has worked with The Breakfast Group over the past 11 years and was instrumental in setting up bars and restaurants including Jerusalem and recently Salvador & Amanda.

Swedish gobo manufacturer Beacon displayed their new high definition digital gobo range, issued as two series, each containing 12 clips. They are available in QuickTime, photo-JPG and 1920x1080/25 PAL code formats. Beacon also had their standard digi gobo ranges on display, and were specifically highlighting their customised digital content service.

GDS's Blues System, available in the UK through Leisuretec, is a new approach to performance working lights, replacing the bulkheads, fluorescents and theatre profiles currently used for performance blues. Manufactured from UV-stable polycarbonate, their sleek, compact and robust design is sealed to IP67, making installation possible in most environments. These design factors produce an extremely reliable fitting that will give many years of trouble-free operation. The Beam and Dome have onboard dimming which allows simple connection to a control line or dimming pot removing the need for other components. All fittings are directly mountable onto a conduit back box.

The occasion of Martin Audio's 35th anniversary saw attention firmly fixed on three areas of product development. In monitor world, the smooth lines of the new LE Series follow on after a decade of success with the 400 and 700 models. The LE1200 and 1500 sport a 12" or 15" with a 1.4" compression driver onto a 'differential' horn producing pattern control narrowing from 100° to 60° as you move back from the wedge's main axis. The LE2100 model is a bi-amp 3-way version with 2x12".

The Longbow addition to the Wavefront line array system was seen at last year's show: main features are an extended low-end response, down from 50Hz to 35Hz, and added SPL, now 142dB continuous in the high end.

This comprises a TiMax Audio Imaging delay matrix driven by a Track The Actors (TTA) system, comprising a TTA Cordis Radio Eye mounted above stage which receives signals from radio tags (pictured below) worn by each actor which are fed via Ethernet to the TTA software, which analyses them to derive positional information about the actors. The TTA software sends MIDI messages to the TiMax software which sets level/delay in the TiMax matrix to place the actors' audio images in the appropriate localisation zones on stage - automatically and in real time.

UK - Leading UK-based amplifier manufacturer MC2 Audio Ltd. has expanded its lightweight (switchmode) E Series with the E4-75 power amplifier.The E4-75 comes after 18 months of development - working closely with distributors and users - and is designed for use in a wide variety of applications, including touring monitor racks.

The E4-75 is a 4-channel amplifier capable of producing 750W RMS per channel into four or eight ohms; it has automatic impedance sensing and changes the power accordingly. MC2 had been receiving requests for such a unit since the E-Series came onto the market in 2003, they report. Much of the R&D has been spent addressing the use of onstage monitoring. 5 Star Cases celebrated their 25th anniversary at the show, drawing the crowds in with their generous giveaways and their stunning transparent flight-case/aquarium, complete with tropical fish.

The '5 Star Speed Challenge' was housed in a custom-built 'Super Tour' flightcase, complete with racing seat, steering wheel and pedals. Each hour, the fastest speed won a limited edition anniversary briefcase with an overall prize of £2,500 to spend at 5 Star Cases for the fastest lap during the entire show.

Also on display was Pioneer's brand new DVJ-1000 player - a console system containing two twin DVJ-1000 DVD/CD decks, the latest Pioneer DJM-800 mixer, VSW-1 video switcher and triple TFT 6.5 " display monitors - for which 5 Star produces the flightcase, of course.

ADB Lighting Technologies unveiled two new luminaires from its award-winning Warp series: The HMI Warp/Daylight - available in motorised and manual versions featuring electronic flicker-free ballasts and light output angles of either 12-30° or 22-50°. The Warp/Ceramic - based on the Philips Ceramic ST 250 HR discharge lamp - offers extremely long lamp-life, has the colour temperature of a tungsten halogen light source and produces the same output as a 1000W tungsten halogen lamp for only 250W power consumption. Two new dimmers were also on show - the Eurodim Sine Wave series and the Erack 50 Plus economy dimmer rack.

Besides its well-known comprehensive range of moving yoke wash and spotlights, SGM now produces three models of LED colour mixing washlight based on high output Luxeon LEDs - Palco3, Palco3 Mobile and Genio Mobile, displayed on the stand of UK distributor, Lightfactor Sales. All use the same combination of RGB LEDs with interchangeable lenses to give 8°, 25° and 40° spread. All three are also available fitted with just white LEDs for simple floodlighting requirements. From Rotterdam, manufacturer and rental company ShowFX launched their FoamMaster and SnowMaster 350 foam and snow machines at PLASA, both of which offer higher output and more efficient operation, plus their new Typhoon fan for inflatables. This is quicker, has confetti and smoke holes in the sides and space for rigging lights to illuminate the inflatable.
