Meyer Sound offered the PLASA debut of the M'elodie high-power curvilinear array. Part of the MILO range of loudspeakers, it is named after the grand-daughter of company founders John and Helen Meyer. A small unit, it nevertheless offers a maximum peak output of 131dB SPL. Also shown was the new MJF-212, a self-powered stage monitor designed for use as a main vocal monitor, high-output drum or keyboard monitor, or as a side-fill monitor in small- to medium-scale systems. The Phoenix range from ElectroVoice on the Telex/Shuttlesound stand sees a return to point source PA systems. Using EV's manifold technology with dual compression drivers, the Phoenix system produces the highest SPL of anything in the EV range, the company reports - 141dB peak from the Sub, 139dB from the top box.

X-Line E, the ultra-compact version of EV's line array range, contains a single 8" and 1" as used in the X-Line D, and has its own dedicated 2 x 12" sub. The sub is designed to be flown behind the mid/high line array from its own hanging frame; the two elements then connect to a master beam above which allows correct angling of the more critical mid/high line.

Whotz Hot were exhibiting at their third PLASA Show, demonstrating their Super Wrench, a replacement for the ubiquitous adjustable spanner, developed by farmers in New Zealand. Available in five different sizes and capable of turning over 1,000 different types of fitting, the Super Wrench can replace approximately £600 worth of tools with four wrenches.

One of the most impressive was the Safety Ring Switch network backup device, which can recover a link in 35ms using any network protocol and which has recently been validated for use on EtherSound networks. Also on show was the LumiNet Monitor V2 software, allowing monitoring and management of the network and any units attached to it.

For the fourth consecutive year, Amelia NV covered the back wall of Earls Court with a ShowLED curtain - this year the brand new ShowLED Animation system. Measuring 12m in height by 39m in width, and offering individual pixel control of its denser, but still randomly-spaced LEDs, the curtain drew excellent responses from visitors. The system works in conjunction with the Arkaos media software system to offer clients the possibility to instantly turn their starcloth into a backdrop with medium-resolution still images, video loops and flash animations. From October to December, an Animation curtain will tour with the Night of the Proms shows in Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany. The curtain will even be bigger then the one seen at PLASA - 15m by 36m, or 540sq.m.

Crown (Harman Pro) exhibited three new products at PLASA this year. The CDi installation amplifier comes in two flavours: the CDi 1 provides 500W per channel into 4ohms, while the CDi2 boasts 700W per channel. The amps are also switchable to 70V output and a front panel LCD enables fast and easy setup.Doing light and efficient, Crown also showed the XTi range, incorporating the 1000, 2000 and 4000 models, providing 500W, 700W and 1200W per channel into 4ohms. The new line also provides connectivity either via USB or Harman Pro's HiQnet software. Finally, the XLS series is a lower power range providing between 300W and 800W per channel across four models.

The Volex V-Lock positive lock connector is one of those simple yet brilliant ideas. Nothing works without power of course, and Volex, having recognised a need in the entertainment industry for secure IEC power connections, invented the V-Lock, which has a locking feature with a simple push-release button to secure the connector with its mating inlet. The company is offering the product in various IEC standard configurations.

Omni Color D system will be introduced by Syncrolite in approximately three months time. A three-scroller, dichroic film colour mix system (CMY and RGB) will include thin film lensing technology on the third scroll which - as well as enabling anamorphic images - will produce more homogenised colour mixing with a resultant completely flat field. Users can also expect hue and saturation controls early '07.

In production now is a new 2kW model that replaces the MX3000 (the original is also 2kW but with a '3kW' output). The new model eliminates the green caste of the original. The super-sized 10kW fixture, produced asa limited run, is now a permanent part of Syncrolite's catalogue.

UK - Northern Light was responsible for the complete production lighting and sound and communications at London's legendary Young Vic - which is due to reopen on 11 October following a major renovation managed by architects Haworth Tompkins.

After winning the tender to provide their expertise in ensuring that the technical aspects of the production lighting and sound were installed to the highest standards possible, Northern Light went on site in January 2006.

In addition to the efforts of Northern Light's drawing office, project management and technical staff, the company's manufacturing division had a tough challenge to face on this project. Due to the performance space and very nature of the Young Vic's artistic direction, Northern Light was called upon to custom make various aspects of the technical requirements.

Color Kinetics was very much entertainment focused this year. Popular product Colorblast has been given a rubber coat, XLR connection, changeable lenses and a C-Clamp for ease of rigging, making it more robust for the touring market. CK also introduced a prototype UV LED fixture - ironic given that one of LED fixtures' USPs is they output no UV! The fixture, however, was impressively effective. Finally, CK's Flexstring, with individually addressable nodes, now comes in white.

The combined MixMash and Pioneer stand featured Pioneer's latest DJ products, the DVJ1000 DVD turntable and the DJM 800 mixer. MixMash has the biggest range of classic video compilations on DVD in Europe, and had some brand new stuff available for the first time at the show. They were concentrating on ambient visuals which has been a massive growth area, with five current titles available.
