Stage automation specialist Stage Technologies' latest news includes an interesting installation at the new Leicester Performing Arts Centre, in which the stage and backstage areas are visible to the street outside. The company provided complete automated power flying, including BigTow winches and a MaxisID control system operated by Nomad control consoles.

Hidden away down in the basement of Lindley Hall was a multitude of smaller stands, and a perhaps surprising amount of passing trade, given the location. At a reduced rate, this area allows smaller companies the chance to have a presence at the show - and by all accounts it was proving very worthwhile.

RWCMD (Royal Welsh College of Music and drama) had taken a stand, and gone even further by sponsoring the purple lanyards that adorned the necks of show visitors. Stage managment lecturer Antonia Collins said: "This downstairs area has really grown. It's great because it means we can be part of the show and let people know about the different courses we have on offer. It is definately worth us exhibiting and we hope to get more of the students involved next year in the stand, but they are always so busy!"

Following his participation in the US last year with the Long Beach Long Riders charity motorbike ride, Triple E's David Edelstein was shortly to set off on another, longer charity ride across the US, this time taking his young son with him on the back of his Harley! The company was this year exhibiting its range of products for the theatre market, including the 3Way track system, launched at ABTT last year.

Lighting rental company HSL has attached increasing importance to theatre and live performance markets recently, and has seen significant growth in its operation. The company was using ABTT to promote its theatre experience and wide equipment inventory. Currently supplying touring productions of This is Elvis (LD Ben P Cracknell) and Blood Brothers (LD Nick Richings), HSL was, importantly, also supplying another vital need of the theatre market by sponsoring the bar at the show.

UK - XL Video is the first UK company to purchase the Lightengine Patch 560 - a 75mm pixel-pitch LED display system which can serve as a dynamic, low resolution 'curtain', set or scenic element. XL's system has gone straight out on ITV4's regular live late night World Cuppa chat-show programme, which ran for the duration of the World Cup.

The Lightengine was specified by video and projection specialist Dick Straker of Mesmer (pictured), working with photographer Marcus Tate. Producer Joe Talbot wanted a theatrical mood to the show, and he, Tate and Straker, opted for a large, abstract image, constantly changing on camera. Lightengine seemed an ideal solution, as Straker needed some visual tools to make the set adaptable and changeable - the antithesis of more conventional plasma screen studio looks.

Talbot says: "Every new television show needs its own unique, visual look

The Netherlands - Rotterdam's premier concert and congress hall complex, de Doelen, has undergone a redevelopment programme to take them through to 2009, and they approached the first phase of the technical upgrade with an unprecedented attention to detail . . .

Built in 1966, de Doelen today operates as a foundation and is considered acoustically to be one of the world's finest modern concert halls. With the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra also resident, the pressure on head technicians Frank van Donkersgoed and Bram Ruitenbeek to remain sensitive to the building parameters while specifying the system that would best meet the requirements of an expanding programme, was paramount.

The main concert hall seats 2,200 people in an auditorium measuring 60m x 30m, while the 700-seat congress centre is housed in a new section of the building constructed in 1997. The management wante

White Light brought together leading manufacturers of tungsten washlightsfor a comparison at the Royal Opera House's Linbury Theatre. Chris Henry reports . . .

UK - It was all guns blazing down at the Opera House, as manufacturers pitched their wares against each other in the tungsten wash shoot-out that the theatre world had long been waiting for. As the lights were fired up, the atmosphere on the battlefield was surprisingly relaxed as competitors called a truce for the test, paving the way for an open and frank discussion.

Hosted by lighting supplier White Light, and organised in conjunction with the Royal Opera House, a steady stream of invited lighting designers, production electricians and venue technicians passed through the ROH's Linbury Theatre to cast a critical eye, and ear to the proceedings.

So what was in the firing line? Well, in alphabetical order, Clay Paky'
