A worldwide launch for the InnovaSON Sy48 mix console, the main features of this new digital desk are more inputs than its predecessor the Sy40 (now up to 64), but in the same chassis. The desk also features more busses (32), more in/outs, and greatly increased DSP processing power, giving 64 input patch (48 mic/line+ 16 line), phantom and phase inversion, low cut 20-500Hz sliding frequencies, noise gate and comp/limiter (both five parameters), four-band EQ with notch filters, and up to 100msec delay on inputs.

SSE now does a brisk trade in sales, not least its touring equipment packaging division: SSE also sells Nexo, and was promoting the new dedicated EtherSound network card for Nexo systems. It also showed the ProSight - an inclinometer system which offers fast and easy installation of speaker systems, particularly line array variants - and drew praise from the judges in the Awards for Innovation.

Plenty of news from Projected Image Digital: a reduced feature set version of the RADlite image server, the MYRAD package, which will run on a standard PC, although for optimum performance a dual processor machine is recommended. As the preferred UK partner of Element Labs, PID had the VersaTILE LED modules on show, plus from D-TEK Industries the large screen D-TFT40W LCD display. Highlighting the company's growth in the audio/video convergence market was the D-Mix Series of video mixing and matrixing tools. PID also showed its Beacon, EpOk and Amorphous royalty-free digital content libraries.

Another new radio mic system, the ATW 1600 is one of three introductions from Audio-Technica. A UHF system with 16 switchable frequencies, this system requires the manual selection of handheld mic channel, neatly hidden in a tamper-proof section of the mic handle. A new capsule and simple two-colour LED battery power indicators complete this MI and semi-pro targeted unit. The entry-level Midnight Blues range includes two vocal and two instrument mics. All feature a MagnaLock soft on/off switch. In the Pro series, the 242 has been re-vamped, as have the 41 and 61, with improvements to frequency response and dynamic range.

The Classic Frame from G-Lec has now been taken a step further: Light Frame is essentially a lower cost version, sacrificing individual pixel control for tile sections, but losing nothing in terms of brightness. More significantly, Phantom Frame is every set designer's dream (for LED screens); four times brighter than Classic, the structural wrapper of the frame is very slim: units weigh just 6.5kg per sq.m.

Strand Lighting launched a range of new products this year including its 2.8.5 console software for the 300 and 500 series desks. Making its debut was the SLD Sinewave dimmer model suitable for any SLD series rack. The company reports it has recently signed some major US contracts for its Sinewave dimmers.

CCT Lighting showed its new LED strip aluminium bar, aimed at the architectural market, available in any length or shape with a variety of beam angles. An added advantage is that additional instruments can be hung on it as well.

Computer music specialist Rolec - now a fully owned subsidiary of Image Sound - is also getting into video. PLASA featured two new Rolec video hard drive players, the VHD2 and the VHD3. Facilities include on-screen texting and advertising scheduling. Rolec claims its machines are still up to a third more cost-effective than other comparables.

The latest console from Zero 88's Frog range; Frog 2, previewed this year. This is a big step forward for Zero 88 and will be its flagship control product. Zero was also gathering feedback before heading back to the design table to fine-tune Frog 2 before its future launch.

Total Solutions Group seemed upbeat, having used the PLASA Show to highlight its recent re-branding. The 'Group' now serves as an umbrella for the familiar brands - Total Fabrications, Slick, T2, new wave truss and the company's training initiative, Total Training.

Picking up on the increasing convergence between lighting and visual mediums and the need for integrated control, Numark launched its DVD Vision Mixer and AV DJ Mixer. The AVM01 offers audio and visual mixing via the one interface including crossfaders for both types on inputs. It has four video channels for composites and two for S-video. Numark had another first with its HDCD1 MP3/twin CD player, complete with 80Gb hard drive, enough to store 40,000 3.5 minute MP3 clips.

As a main dealer for Sony, pride of place was given to the UWP wireless mic system on the Total Audio Solutions stand; it offers six system packages, including the flagship modular half-unit rackmount system which can contain up to six UWP tuner modules, with 192 selectable frequencies. Main components are lavalier mic and body pack, a uni-directional handheld mic with built-in antenna, and the tuner module. It's aimed at corporate events, lecture, TV and broadcast applications.

5 Star Systems from Holland featured products from a new intelligent lighting manufacturer in Budapest, including a 250W wash fixture. Also showing was a prototype 38-LED moving light, using 3W blue and green LEDs and 1W reds.

Taiwanese company Acme Effects launched the iSoloution range of lighting products in association with UK partner Pro Light Concepts. With no Western backing, the company has worked hard to ensure its products are distributed worldwide.

Alongside its ranges of control options, coloured fluorescent tube specialists Anytronics were showing new additions to the outstation options for its Anylight systems, the new DP804 dimming pack and its enhanced range of T5 fluorescent fixtures.

Swedish company Beacon AB was showing its comprehensive gobo catalogue with over 350 new gobo designs. Still attracting strong interest was its Blackline range of gobos launched at PL

Klaus Weber has recently been appointed as regional manager, Germany, Austria and Switzerland for Columbus McKinnon and was with the team at PLASA for the first time. The Hurricane manual chain hoist designed for inverted and regular use made its UK debut.

Cee Norm UK enjoyed its first PLASA show with its own stand and was pleased to welcome lots of visitors to view its range of custom-built power distribution products. New products included the plug and socket-outlet terminal housing form the Quick Connect range.

American Audio, the sound side of American DJ, featured its new Q Series mixers, now available in black; complete with new PCB design, new mic inputs, stream flow LEDs and aux inputs. The machine's knobs have been upgraded to be more tactile and easier to handle, and all mixer LEDs now sit inside their relevant buttons. On the rear is a limiter for mobile DJs, to prevent speaker damage.

Coolux presented the LED Kachel, a backlight solution to space problems. Based on a tiny single-chip RGB high intensity LED, it comes in two forms - 20sq.cm (16 LEDs) and 10sq.cm (9 LEDs). It offers three channels of DMX, individual address to each square, soft patch and daisy chain connection. Also from Coolux, and reported previously in L&SI, Pandora's Box is a media server with nine layers of control.

The A.C. Lighting stand saw two key products launched. The Jands Vista lighting console (shown last year as a prototype) was demoed extensively this year and a number of sales made. Also launched was the Chroma-Q DB4 Colour Block: using technology licensed from Color Kinetics, this modular LED fixture can be arrayed in various configurations. Also new, was the Chroma-Q 4Play self-healing, four-way DMX buffer.

Litec Srl had plenty of new products, with the debut of the EXE brand, a dedicated range of electric control equipment for electric motors and hoists. The Litecad for final packaging and a new collection of riggers' technical clothing were also launched.
