KAM has launched 71 new products over the last 18 months. PLASA saw the first showing of the IMS Pro series of speakers, a versatile injection-moulded mobile DJ rig with three passive full-range enclosures and two active ones and the choice of two different subs.

Lighting Innovation showed its latest SuperBeam beam light, with 1.2K/80V tungsten lightsource, which doubles the output of the classic beam light. The lamp also lasts three times as long as a traditional beam light source and contains two mirrors to optimize the output and direct the beam between 3-12°.

Catering for a wide range of PA requirements, Cerwin Vega launched its Intense portable system, comprising three cabinets, all with titanium compression drivers, plywood cabinets and HighRoad horns. Also on show were the now-shipping ProStax, Structural Design Series and top-of-the-range Vision lines.

A stunning four-minute laser show featuring 24 pre-programmed lasers was a highlight of the Spectrum (UK) Lasers stand. Nigel Williams said the company was the first to introduce affordable three-colour lasers that offer yellow. Spectrum is the exclusive distributor of Actor Mate products from Taiwan.

Buster Cases was showing no new products this year, but the company reports that it looks forward to the positive benefits of PLASA for at least six months after the show.

Two new effects projectors from Clay Paky: Alpha Spot and Alpha Spot HPE, and an Alpha Wash to go with. All are based on a 575W discharge lamp, on full articulation moving yoke. Also from Clay Paky, GoldenScan 4 brings this moving mirror veteran up to date with the addition of a fixed gobo wheel and all-new electronics.

LDR's Lisa Papi said the company was having an excellent show, meeting up with its dealers and also attracting new customers. New for 2004 is the XPress colour scroller available in three models and handling between 2-16 colours. Also new is a PC discharge luminaire.

USA - Prelite has broadened its arsenal of pre-visualization capabilities by offering ESP Vision Studio Version software. ESP Vision, with an extensive luminaire database, has an unprecedented ability to realistically simulate all performance aspects of both automated and conventional luminaries, say Prelite. The Studio Version provides additional functionality and support options not available in the standard package. Prelite's arrangement with ESP Vision to deploy this version of software is unique.

A compact steerable line array, Target U16 from Duran Audio builds on this company's extensive experience in using DSP time manipulation to affect dispersion pattern on its speaker products. U16 is a scaleable self-powered mini line array containing a pair of 6.5" and a single 1" driver per cabinet capable of delivering 123dB at 1m. Tell the DDA unit where you want to hit, and at what SPL and the unit will calculate the rest. U16 is designed to be used with Duran's existing B215 sub. Duran also showed the AXYS Intellivox-V90 - a compact, passively steered vertical column loudspeaker designed for use in 70V/100V PA and VA systems. The quirky-looking Intellidisc was also on preview. Resembling a hexagonal satellite dish, the unit, at approximately 1m diameter, houses multiple drivers and, it's claimed, has a completely reconfigurable dispersion, both horizontally and vertically.

Advanced Fiber Optics from Barcelona has over 60 distributors and operates in research, architectural, entertainment and leisure sectors. A large off-the-shelf range includes the new MicroBraid side-emitting fibre and a variety of DMX-controlled light sources.

Andolite displayed its comprehensive range of products designed for the installation of audio and lighting systems. New were its white light bars, now fitted with white ABS sockets. Recent projects have included installation work on His Majesty's Theatre in Aberdeen.

Apollo Design's new Smart Color scroller is described as "everything you need in one package," and is available in three models, each with pre-installed Apollo Gel Heat Shield, increasing a normal gel string life by three times. The Smart Move gobo rotator was on show, usable without a control board due to its integrated microprocessor.

Shure Distribution showed Shure's new SLX4 install range radio mic system. Simple and effective, the SLX has automatic channel scan for available frequencies, and subsequent microphone grab (interrogation and setting of the mic's transmitter to match) when held in front of the unit. On the same stand, but from QSC, comes the Modular Design series, two-way cabinets based on either 12" or 15" drivers with three horn variants (60°x40°, 90°x40° and 120°x40°); all in the same size box. The RMX 5050 amplifier is the latest addition to the range: 5kW per channel, it has all the limiters and filters QSC users will expect.

At the Loud Technologies camp, the AX speaker is a general-purpose speaker cabinet from EAW with wide dispersion, while the Element Series of compact weatherproof speakers was also launched. Attracting interest from Macie was the Onyx range of new analogue live sound mixers, from 12 to 48 channels. Big Knob is a control room master section, giving all the connectivity required, while TT24 is a live sound digital mixer, the main feature of which is turbo touch - the ability to access any function on the desk within two button pushes. Tapco is the new brand name from Mackie, offering the S5 self-powered active studio monitor, Tweek 31 a 31-band graphic, and Squeeze a comp/limiter with an 'air' feature to retain transients when using heavy compression.

Two new 200W units in the ever-expanding Chroma range from Pulsar: the Batten 200 and the Flood 200 are what the name suggests - the batten is 1200mm, the flood approx' 200mm square. Both fixtures are rated IP65 for outdoor use, and both work on 100-240V power, with DMX control for RGB colour mixing. The new ChromaStrip2 has a reversible diffuser cover giving 20° or 90° output.

Clock Audio's bespoke audio systems have spawned the CS series, a conference microphone designed to minimize the number of units used, but maximize audio quality. The MR-88 automatic microphone mixer uses DSP technology to provide an expandable but easily controllable system.

Inition, a company specializing in 3D imagery, used their PLASA debut to launch new large-scale autostereoscopic plasma screens which show 3D images without requiring the viewer to wear 3D glasses. Early generations of autostereoscopic screens had a very narrow viewing angle, whereas the new types can be viewed from virtually any angle. Each screen is retro-fitted with a filter which creates the illusion of a 3D image.

General manager of Swan Flight, Sean Dodds said the company was having a "fantastic" first show at PLASA. The company manufactures purpose-built flightcases and was showing the new Pioneer range for front-loading CD players with 'butterfly door', which was eliciting good reactions from DJs.

Several new 100V line install speakers from IC Audio: a 6W wall-mount unit conforming to BS 5839, a new ceiling speaker with ceramic cable clamp and thermal fuse, and a new pre-amp, the O6, a 5-channel rack-mount unit. All IC amps have built-in 24V DC power supplies for coverage during mains power loss. The new MX-120E is an economy amp with quarter-inch outs. The MX-Amp 480 is a powerful amplifier for the larger install, offering two zones of control.

One of the most interesting products belonged to debut exhibitor Infinium Technologies, launching its optical, contact-free faders with adjustable torque control. Three years in development, it could have a significant impact on a wide range of control surfaces.

Advanced Rigging Motion Pro is the latest product from German company SET (Scenic Event Technology). Designed typically to control any motion control equipment, chain hoists, electric fly bars, wire winches, the most attractive feature of this Windows-based software is the communications system for relaying data and commands to the various devices - namely Ethernet via Cat 5 cable, which greatly affects costs. The system complies with the latest German safety regulations DIN 56921 and 56925 as well as DIN-V-19250.
