Pioneering lighting designer Andy Phillips, who was an integral part of the artistic team at the Royal Court Theatre from 1965 - 1972, passed away on September 17 aged 63.

Phillips was famed for his unfussy and uncluttered lighting techniques, believing that if lighting was noticed it was essentially bad lighting. During his time at the Royal Court he was given free reign to experiment with lighting, which ultimately resulted in the famous 'white light' technique where, if colour was used at all it tended to be colour correction reducing the orange cast of tungsten sources. This method aimed to retain the natural skin tone of an actors face and ensure total visual clarity of facial expression. During this period many of the Court's set designers were also dispensing with the artifice of theatre, often removing masking and leaving stage and lighting exposed. John Dexter, speaking of Phi

The transient nature of the event meant that the gantry had to be lightweight for easy transportation, free standing so that it left no trace once removed and of an adjustable width because the finishing line was a different width for each stage.

With the gantry having been so well received on the Tour, Mick Bennett, technical director at the Tour of Britain and also show director of Cycle, The International Cycle Show, chose to use it again as the gateway to the show when it runs from the 23 to 26 September. He said: &

USA - Soundelux is now shipping the E250 cardioid tube condenser microphone, designed to address the inherent problems with the modern practice of close-miking loud vocals. Classic tube condenser microphones were never meant to be placed within six-inches of loud vocalists, yet producers and engineers love the presence, size and low-frequency boost this adds to their artist's sound. However, the proximity effect's low-frequency build up and the upper mid-range/treble tilt of many popular old classic cardioid microphones can also work counter-productively, causing problems requiring extensive outboard signal processing.

Designer David Bock remarks: "I started out designing a more affordable and mellow version of the ELUX 251 while still retaining all the 251's meat and sound. Something you can't get from a 47 or any of the other vintage mics. The E250 is not as bright as the

Screen rental company The Picture Works created a stunning display using Ligh

UK - Ethos made its UK debut at PLASA recently and judging from the positive feedback and initial sales it is proving to be a resounding success, manufacturer Logic System reports. Pro Audio product distributors from around the globe inundated the company's staff with both enquiries and orders, to such an extent that a planned increase to production and a proposed move to larger manufacturing facilities has had to be brought forward to cope with demand.
