UK - When software licensing company Symbian held their two-day Exposium 03 at London’s ExCeL Centre to preview Symbian OS v7.0s, their latest operating system release for advanced mobile phones, they wanted to create a dynamic environment for keynote speeches and technology workshops, while providing a forum for over 70 exhibitors.

To achieve their goal they utilized two of ExCeL’s vast halls - N1, for exhibitions and workshops and N2 as a 1,200 seat auditorium - and asked integrated technology providers MCL to create a flexible production infrastructure. A division of Creative Technology (CT), MCL London equipped the main theatre and five breakout rooms with projection, lighting and sound, with a rapid turnaround to accommodate a gala dinner at the end of the first day.

The main backdrop consisted of a 20m wide cyclorama, backlit top and bottom using Vari*Lite VL

Combining the roles of museum, climate-controlled storage space and public exhibition venue, the polygonal-sh

UK - E//T//C UK is supplying a Pani 2k Tungsten Halogen projector with AMD-32 slide changer for David Mamet’s classic 1974 comedy Sexual Perversity In Chicago, which has opened at the Comedy Theatre in London’s West End to rave reviews. The large format projection specialists were approached by the show’s production manager John Dalston and set and costume designer Jeremy Herbert, both seeking a rapid method of scene-changing to recreate the work’s hectic, cinematic narrative style.

With 32 different scenes in the high-action, 88-minute, one-act performance, some lasting no more than 10 seconds, and all leaping between disparate locations like bars, libraries, bedrooms and the streets of Chicago, conventional scenery changes were out of the question! Instead, they thought laterally and turned to projection to create the location and ambience for ea

UK - George Gilbert, one of the UK's leading video projection experts, has died at the age of 79. In the 1950s and 60s he was one of just a handful of projection specialists in the UK with the skills to set up and operate the Eidophor and GE Talaria projectors. Video projection technology in this period was cutting-edge but, at the same time, temperamental. The light valve at the heart o

Patrick Hill is thrilled with the company’s latest achievement. "Everything about AVC Productions is developed with service in mind. UK - Paradigm Audio Visual has successfully achieved their ISO 9001:2000 certification at the first attempt. Managing director Greg Jeffreys describes this as an important development for the Bedford-based company, which distributes dnp high resolution screens, in addition to manufacturing its own rear projection rigs (and bespoke solutions).

This, says Jeffreys, is the culmination of Paradigm’s programme to bring more substance to its infrastructure. Last year the company recruited Paul Wood MBA as general manager and set out a much more aggressive business plan. "Part of the rationale in increasing our business as a manufacturer was to improve our capacity in a controlled way, and ISO was a useful exercise in that it gave us the chance to review our business and highlight some areas where we needed to make improvements," said Jeffreys. "The other reason fo

UK - British audio and speech technology company, NXT, has announced the launch, by 3M, of a rear projection screen using SoundVu technology. The ‘Vikuiti XRVS-120 extended resolution video screen with sound enhancement, which is part of 3M Optical Systems Division's suite of Vikuiti display enhancement products, was unveiled yesterday at the annual InfoComm exhibition in Florida.

The Vikuiti XRVS-120 is a result of a recently reached in-principle agreement for 3M to exclusively provide SoundVu technology to the professional rear projection screen market. NXT's SoundVu technology turns the projection screen itself into a Distributed Mode Loudspeaker (DML) by using actuators positioned at the 'invisible' edge to vibrate the screen, locking sound and vision as one. NXT's SoundVu technology works without adding depth or size to the unit and, by using the screen, eliminates th

UK - BT eGovernment's Innovation Centre, in Westminster's Queen Anne's Gate, is a demonstration and discussion venue, which uses available and emerging technologies to illustrate innovative electronic solutions across the public sector and with other businesses.

The Centre was originally opened in 2000, but just over three years ago the Government started to review ways in which it could restructure in order to have all its services online by 2005. It wanted to transform the way it did business internally, and at the same time improve dialogue - and so it turned to its nearby resource, BT Stepchange, who created the Innovation Centre, with environments that were more theatrical, virtual and dynamic, and with a reception area that would have high visual impact.

"The idea," said outgoing centre manager Joe Crofts, "was to move people's mindsets away from their da

One of Brisbane's oldest taverns, St Paul's was recently rescued from being nothing but a dust trap, and has been refurbished into an outstanding venue for live jazz and blues, as well as for private functions. UK - The 224th Epsom Derby presented an opportunity for ARB to demonstrate the diversity of its services and equipment. This is the eighth year ARB has worked at the Derby, working both for the racecourse and for production company Net Production to provide a wide variety of equipment for the weekend.

ARB’s project co-ordinator Gaynor Molyneux managed the team on site throughout the event. As part of the company’s overall remit, ARB was the key temporary power supplier to the Epsom racecourse, with 16 generators on site for the Derby ranging from 30 to 320Kva, utilizing three miles of distribution cables and distro boxes all installed by specialist engineers to ensure the safe distribution of electricity. The company’s generators powered various hospitality areas including the Vodafone and Classic Marquees.

UK - Castle Donington, often referred to as the 'spiritual home' of rock in the UK, played host to nearly 50,000 metal fans who turned out for the first ever Download festival. Fifty bands from across Europe and the United States, including of Marilyn Manson, Iron Maiden, Audioslave and a surprise appearance from rock gods Metallica, roared their way through the two-day festival, ably supplied with PA equipment supplied to Clear Channel Entertainment by SSE Hire, with a little help from ML Executives.

Every console at the event was a Midas one, resulting in an impressive total of eight XL3s, three Heritage 3000s and a Heritage 1000, accompanied by a fair complement of Klark Teknik signal processing equipment. SSE employed its standard 'flip-flop' festival system for FOH across both stages. Three Heritage 3000s with an XL3 sidecar graced FOH for the main stage, while a further tw

UK - James Thomas Engineering is launching Pixeldrive at this week’s ABTT Show. Pixeldrive is an innovative new video software-based control system for the company’s Pixel fixtures - further fuelling the control integration between varying visual media.

For this development, James Thomas’ R&D department has collaborated with IRAD, developers of the RADlite digital media server. The RADlite system fuses digital media with DMX-driven lighting consoles - for example, Avolites and WholeHog - giving DMX control of visual images via a familiar set of attributes - similar to programming a moving light. The collaboration between the IRAD and JTE teams has resulted in Pixeldrive - the RADlite control system being applied to JTE’s revolutionary Pixel Range of LED fixtures.

The new control system allows the synchronization of digital media to JTE’s high brig

UK - Old Trafford’s ‘Theatre of Dreams’ saw as much action off the pitch as on during last month’s UEFA Champions League Final between Juventus and AC Milan. Outside the stands, the home of Manchester United was turned into a giant hospitality village as the major sponsor partners - Sony Computer Entertainment, MasterCard and Amstel - laid on lavish entertainment inside, while fourth sponsor, Ford, turned their nearby showroom into a huge party zone.

Contracted by production company, Denham Technical Services, to provide a complete relay distribution - not only in the giant tented area, but also within some of the permanent function rooms - CT Screenco were in constant action. Their inventory - mostly supplied by CT-NEC - enabled corporate hospitality guests to have a permanent visual reference to the live action and looped highlights of the previous roun

Italy - On 27 May, world-famous tenor Luciano Pavarotti hosted the tenth edition of his annual Pavarotti & Friends charity concert at Novi Sad Park in his home town of Modena. The event was transmitted live and recorded by RAI, Italy’s state TV/radio broadcaster, and this year’s technical news was audio contractor Agorà’s decision to use three recently purchased DiGiCo D5 Live consoles. Daniel Tramontani was designer and head of the complex audio set-up for the entire event - FOH, monitor, recording and broadcast. "This year’s exciting challenge was to use Agorà’s three new DiGiCo D5 consoles at this very important

UK - 1 May saw the launch of LSD/Fourth Phase’s eagerly-awaited M Box. The skies stayed clear, the evening warmed, and as the barbecue was lit and corks pulled, the great and good of creative lighting began to arrive.

What drew them was the appearance of a new video control system which can be accessed live, in real-time, from a lighting desk. So what’s new? "What we’ve done is approach this as a light, not video," explained Mark Hunt who is responsible for all the M Box software. "That’s a crucial difference: to me video is just a secondary thing. Videos, especially movie clips, want to be scaled, rotated, colorized - and yes, you can do all those things, but M Box is not designed just to present video. For a start there’s a huge library of stock images on board - over 2,000. With M Box you’ve also got total video control, and
