UK - Following the initial unveiling of the CV 20 concept at PLASA 2006, the 2007 trade show sees the very first production model of Crest's flagship live sound analogue console, bearing the serial number 001.

More features have been added since its first public appearance, the most significant being an A/D and D/A NexSys module option. Any number of analogue audio outputs per module can be converted to digital EtherSound and CobraNet protocols, with support for other protocols to be added in the near future. This will allow for a digital snake to interface directly into the CV 20. The module can also covert digital audio into analog, thus making the CV 20 an ideal back-up partner for digital consoles. One NexSys module will allow for up to 16 channels of A/D and D/A conversion. Multiple modules can be plugged into the console back frame.

UK - 5th September saw DiGiCo unveil its concept of the future, the SD7, in front of 120 of its distributors, sound engineers, designers and rental companies who were invited to an exclusive party held at London's Tower Bridge. The company then unveiled the SD7 in front of members of the pro audio press on the opening day of the PLASA Show in London.

The SD7 is based around a new technology developed at DiGiCo, called "Stealth digital processing", and could ultimately bring a whole new dimension to digital mixing, the company says.

"The party was mainly to celebrate our MBO," says DiGiCo marketing director David Webster. "But it also gave us the chance to let our guests have a sneak preview of what we're working towards. The SD7 is purely a concept, but who knows what the real possibilities could be."

UK - OmniLine is a versatile, micro-line array designed for installation in a wide variety of architectural environments. Its modular approach and scalability extend its use from foreground applications to sound reinforcement in large acoustic spaces. Intelligent software enables an array to be configured to deliver sound precisely over any vertical angle to fit the venue profile without spilling onto surfaces where sound is not required. Additionally, elimination of high-frequency side-lobes gives OmniLine the advantage over currently available DSP steered columns, making it suitable for high quality music reproduction as well as speech in large, reverberant spaces, says the company.

Each OmniLine array is constructed by connecting together multiple array modules. Up to 32 modules can be connected where both high output and vertical focussing down to low/mid frequencies are req

Austria - Audio rental company Audioservices and Design recently provided the live sound system for DJ Tiësto's Elements of Life tour throughout Europe, including a recent live concert at the Pyramide in Vienna.

Because of the consistent high energy of DJ Tiësto's concerts, there existed a need for a line array capable of handling high sound pressure levels on a continual basis, as DJ Tiësto takes very few breaks during performances. Additionally, Audioservices and Design needed a lightweight line array system with no sacrifice in power. To that end, the company deployed a touring system for European dates based upon JBL Vertec VT4889 large-format line array elements, with JBL VRX932s in use for additional fill speakers.

"In standard rock and roll setups the music allows for a lot of pauses for the equipment to rest momentarily, but with an environmental dance-m

USA - Metric Halo has developed a Jensen Transformer-based front-end option for the ULN-2 stereo mic pre.

According to Joe Buchalter, president of Metric Halo: "The ULN-2 is an incredibly good mic pre, but sometimes you want something that isn't quite 'so pristine' - a certain amount of low-order harmonic distortion has a way of adding depth and sheen to everything that passes through it, thus the high regard applied to classic transformer coupled preamps.

"With the transformer option installed, the ULN-2 acquires that classic character. A second benefit is that the transformer completely electrically isolates the preamp from the source, raising the common mode rejection above its already excellent performance, and providing a measure of confidence when dealing with the unknowns of location sound."

UK - In the world of high-fashion retail, Abercrombie & Fitch has remained a frontrunner with its popular, youthful brand of casual apparel. When the successful retail and catalogue operation decided to create a new class of flagship stores, they opted for Meyer Sound systems.

Each of the three locations selected for the new stores - on New York's Fifth Avenue, at Los Angeles' The Grove shopping centre, and in London's Mayfair - has been designed for maximum audio and visual impact. "The vision for these stores was to design a retail environment that is as much about fashion as it is entertainment," says David Schwartz, Abercrombie & Fitch's director of audio/video technology. "We wanted to design an audio system that could deliver the impact of a full-blown theatre experience."

For the London location, Schwartz designed a distributed system that includes 5

UK - The Swansea Bay Summer Festival is one of the UK's biggest carnival events watched by crowds of over 35,000. Celebrating 200 years since the abolition of slavery, this multi-cultural event builds to a crescendo of samba drums and high energy street dance with the City Streets - Summer Beats concert held on the 26 August.

Total Sound Solutions turned to Harman Pro for the sound system. Company director, Chris Hooke chose a JBL VerTec VT4887 compact line array set-up for the job. He reports: "This was right on the edge of a residential area in Swansea so obviously we had to be very careful with the sound. We were able to use JBL's Line Array Calculator software to tell us exactly what angles to use to get the exact coverage without sound over-spilling into the residential area. There were two hotels literally about 20m past where we wanted to fire so the main adva

UK - Martin Audio has incorporated a number of "significant improvements" throughout its Blackline Series of loudspeakers.

Drivers and crossover networks have been improved and all low-frequency drivers used in two-way systems now benefit from the addition of aluminium demodulating rings to minimise the variation in voice coil inductance as the coil moves in the gap. The result is improved midrange clarity and reduced intermodulation distortion at high excursions, ensuring that the sound balance and quality are maintained even at high levels, says the company.

In the development of the Blackline Series special attention has also been given to matching the directivity of the low frequency drivers to the HF horns in the crossover region. This has been achieved by careful choice of LF cone profiles, together with improvements in crossover design.

The new design ethos

Belgium - AED Rent has become the first European customer for QSC Audio's new PowerLight 3 Class D amplifier. The Belgian company this month confirmed an initial investment in 80 top-of-the-range PL380's as it upgrades its rental stock.

AED Rent specialises in providing dry-rental support to production and rental companies (rather than end users); although sharing its early history with QSC's territorial distributors, AED bvba, the two companies today operate independently, though co-operatively, under separate ownership.

Managing director of AED Rent, Eddy van Nuffel, says that the new amplifier was earmarked for purchase as soon as it was announced, and they began beta-testing back in March. "We conducted listening tests and the amplifier sounded extremely musical, with impressive Class D efficiency right across the frequency spectrum," Eddy van Nuffield reports.
