Germany - The new L.U.C.A.S Performer is the latest "refinement" of HK Audio's successful L.U.C.A.S line of active sound reinforcement systems aimed at solo entertainers and combos, the company says. The new model is more compact, lighter, and more powerful than its predecessor. Total system weight has been reduced from 60 to 44kg, thanks to the use of digital power amps and neodymium loudspeakers in both the subwoofer and the satellites.

HK Audio claim: "The lean new components not only reduce the system weight, they also give it more muscle, agility and definition. The extended headroom, fast signal processing and excellent pulse response work together to produce a precise yet powerful soundscape that remains full and rich whether the system is operating at minimal levels or is being pushed to the limit."

UK - Cheshire-based rental, sales and installation company VME Ltd has purchased two Allen & Heath GL2800 dual-function live sound consoles, as part of an upgrade to its PA hire stock. VME already owns several Allen & Heath consoles from the ML, WZ, PA and Xone Series, and the 24-channel and 32-channel GL2800 mixers have been added to service the smaller gigs, festivals and events that the company regularly manages.

"The GL2800 is the perfect size for smaller venues, gigs and festivals, which make up a huge portion of our hire business. The mixer's 10 auxes provide plenty of capacity so we are easily able to manage FOH, monitors, and have room left over for effects," comments VME director,Dion Davie. "The GL2800 has a new mic preamp design, which offer great headroom and clean sound, and a brand new 4-band EQ, which is incredibly accurate and musical. All in all,

UK - Dublin based Ballyfermot College of Further Education was in the news recently when the Irish Minister for education and science, Mary Hanafin T.D. opened their new media building. The building, designed to be multifunctional, will be home to the college'sdepartments of animation, television and film, multi-media and games, music performance, management and sound. "Prior to this, all these departments had been scattered around the college campus," said Larry O'Toole, the College's course co-ordinator for the Higher National Diploma in Music Technology. "It was a most unsatisfactory arrangement."

"This building has been on the cards for nearly ten years," said the College's John Moriarty, "and now, at last, we have a purpose built facility for our students." The building is the realisation of a long held dream for Moriarty who was inst

UK - Three DiGiCo D5 Live consoles are being used on the touring musical version of Jeff Wayne's The War of the Worlds: two at front-of-house, routing audio to a full surround Meyer Sound loudspeaker system, with another at the monitor position.

Gary Langan, who has spent a great deal of time deep inside the recording aspect of The War of the Worlds, is in charge of the master FOH console, whilst experienced D5 operator Richard Sharratt controls the other. Robin Fox sits at monitors and Ali Viles is designated the challenging assignment of system technician.

"I think Jeff had been secretly planning this stage show for more than 20 years," says Langan. "But it's only now that technically there's the wherewithal for him to be able to bring some of his ideas to life.

UK - The historic Coronet Cinema in South London's Elephant & Castle has undergone a multi-million pound refurbishment to create a stunning new live music and club venue. The 2,200 capacity Art Deco building, which began its life as a theatre in the early 19th Century before becoming a cinema in 1910, now houses regular live music gigs and club nights, with a newly-installed EV XLC line-array sound reinforcement system.

The team behind the Coronet re-launch includes Simon Parkes, the man who rescued the derelict Brixton Academy in the 1980s. Unsurprisingly, he has put live music at the core of the Coronet's new business plan, and wants to put the venue firmly on the touring circuit. So far, the club has hosted Franz Ferdinand, The Orb and Macy Gray, and is nurturing a commitment to showcasing new bands and avant-garde events.

UK - South London based PA company Systems Etc is the first in the UK to embrace Electro-Voice's new X-Line XLE compact line array system, supplied by Shuttlesound. Company owner Bernard Mani has customised the XLE system with EV's new 2x 15" subs, nominally part of the XLC range, and a perfect match for Systems Etc's dance music clients.

Last year, Systems Etc invested in an EV XLC system, which has been used for mainstream events for up to 30,000 people. Mani has bumped up his XLC inventory as well this month, encouraged by the mix-and-match quality of the two systems. "The XLE is really tiny, compact and user-friendly, and apart from the obvious advantages of its size, the other thing that impresses is its clarity. We're tailoring the system to our own needs, using the new XLC 215 subs which are a perfect fit. And we're just waiting for the new grid adaptors, which

Liechtenstein - One year after Neutrik was named 'Pick Hit' winner by Broadcast Engineering magazine, the award was presented once again to the Liechtenstein connector manufacturer for technological innovation. This time, the award was given to Neutrik AG on the occasion of the NAB 2006 in Las Vegas (24-27 April 2006).

"Neutrik is proud to receive the Pick Hit Award again and eager to continue research, development and production of innovative connector systems for the entertainment industry," say the company. The winners of the Pick Hit Award were selected by an anonymous group of judges from the broadcast, postproduction, network or satellite industries and were neither known by the editors nor by the publisher of Broadcast Engineering in advance.

UK - Dartford's Orchard Theatre is a well-established venue in one of the most heavily populated areas of England. From orchestras to tribute bands, comedy to lectures, plays to pantomimes, the Orchard attracts a diverse audience from a wide catchment area throughout south and east London, Kent and Essex.

When the theatre wanted to upgrade the audio system of its Circle Bar, the speakers needed to be able to broadcast a diversity of content with uniform high quality. So specialist AV installers Whitwam turned to Turbosound. "The Circle Bar is designed for use as a stand alone meeting / seminar space and for holding varying workshops and small shows. At those times the speakers need to deliver standalone high quality foreground music and sound reinforcement," says Whitwam's senior engineer, Andy Pymm. "When the bar isn't being used as a separate area, the speakers

Germany - After decades of experience in designing power amps for the international touring business, Electro-Voice has introduced its Tour Grade amplifiers. The models TG7 and TG5 are state-of-the-art power amplifiers based on three-stage class H Grounded Bridge design and intelligent switching power supply technology, say the company. In only a 2U housing with less than 15kg weight, they provide astounding 2 x 3500W (TG7) and 2 x 1900W (TG5). UK - Adlib Audio supplied a powerful sound system whilst sister company Adlib Lighting supplied the illumination for cult New York rockers, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, on their recent whirlwind UK tour. The three back-to-back dates - Glasgow Barrowlands plus Manchester and Birmingham Academies - are all gigs that Adlib know really well, explained FOH babysitter and systems tech Steve Pattison. This helped enormously in terms of familiarity with the sonic parameters they knew would work - with no production rehearsals, a good knowledge of the rooms was a Godsend.

Adlib's ability to offer a combined sound and lighting package won them the business, as it meant that the band's production manager, Roger Carne, only had to deal with one company for all technical requirements, while Adlib could offer good value and the same streamlined service for both departments.

The Netherlands - Three Soundcraft mixing desks have been specified and installed in a new, purpose-built concert venue in Eindhoven. Designed by architects MVRDV and developed by Ove Arup & Partners at a cost of €6.9m, the highly-designed De Effenaar replaces the former single-room venue on the same site that has been demolished to make way.

Trading on two floors, the complex incorporates a café/restaurant, a large concert venue (for 1200 people), a secondary 400-capacity room (with balcony) and a small studio theatre.De Effenaar, which has quickly become one of the most significant 'circuit' venues in the south of Holland, selected 40- and 32-channel Soundcraft MH3 dual-mode consoles for use in the FOH and foldback positions of the smaller venue, and a 48-channel SM20 for monitor duties in the large concert space.

Mexico - MC2 has appointed Hi Tech Audio as its distributor for Mexico. Based in Tlalpan, on the southern edge of Mexico City, the company specialises in a wide range of leading professional audio brands including DiGiCo, Yamaha and HK Audio. The company needed a range of high quality amplifiers to complement its other products and MC2 amplifiers are the ideal choice.

"We are very excited to have been appointed the MC2 distributor for Mexico," says Hi Tech Audio's Antonio Martínez Benita. "Our company specialises in high quality brands and MC2 is the perfect addition to our portfolio."

MC2's Ian McCarthy adds: "The pro audio market in Mexico is expanding rapidly, as witnessed by the number of leading brands that are regularly seen on the country's productions. We are very pleased that our products will now be helping to provide the high quality audio

Australia - Situated on Sydney's Darling Harbour, Australia's leading superclub, Home, plays host to some of the world's most respected DJs and has recently branched into live music. A key component of this move was a technical refit, which included the installation of a state of the art audio system comprising exclusively Allen & Heath mixers, and a 16-cabinet JBL line-array.

"I have a passion for both live and club music and I am very excited by the emerging genre that combines elements of both," comments Simon Page, owner of Home. "We had very clear demands from both local and international artists to choose Allen & Heath DJ consoles, so it was an easy step for us to go with Allen & Heath for the live requirements as well."

The club is on three levels, with a maximum capacity close to 2500. There are four function rooms, outdoor balconies, numerous bars,

UK - "This is a first for the band," said John Tinline of Encore. "For the first time ever this is not going to be a synth' show - Erasure will all use real musical instruments." Encore has been providing sound services to Erasure for the last few years so Tinline should know. "Funny thing is, as the band go analog we've gone completely digital. Once the signal goes into the stage box it stays digital right through the desk and out into the d&b audiotechnik D12 amplifiers."

The musical switch has brought some controversial changes "The band are playing a Country & Western style show; they've re-written, and re-arranged every song," said Tinline. Erasure's front-of-house engineer was a little more circumspect: "All the songs are recognisable but completely different as you would imagine, being acoustic now," said Matt West. "

UK - Bristol-based PA company Sonix Audio has purchased four of Klark-Teknik's new DN9848E system controllers, one of the key components of the new Show Command integrated system, which provides full control over loudspeaker management and/or in-ear monitoring using Ethernet technology.

Part of the Helix suite of products, the DN9848E processors give Sonix engineers the freedom to roam around their venues, controlling delay times and EQ settings from a wi-fi enabled tablet using the new ELGAR plug-in based remote control software.

The DN9848Es were supplied, along with six KT DN370s graphic equalisers for general inventory top-up, by Shuttlesound. Sonix Audio's Paul Goold says: "It was a two-way choice between different brands, but we felt that the Klark-Teknik unit was ultimately more future-proof than the alternative."

USA - As part of an extensive renovation project, the sanctuary at Immanuel Baptist Church in Baltimore, Maryland features a new sound reinforcement system driven by Inter-M L Series power amplifiers. Audio-Video Group, a design-build system integrator based in Frederick, Maryland, provided the design of the new sound system in addition to heading up its installation. The company chose to go with a distributed, mono approach to insure complete coverage throughout the 300-capacity room, which is wider than it is deep.

"This new system represents a big improvement over the 15-year-old version it replaced," says Charles Cassell of Audio-Video Group. "We've all been quite pleased with the sonic upgrade in every aspect of reinforcement at services and other events held in the sanctuary." Four Inter-M power amplifiers (two model L1800 and two model L2400) are rack-

UK - Leading staging company Stagecraft Theatre Services recently completed the design and installation of a new theatre system at the award-winning Mossbourne Academy in London. Mossbourne, which recently won the RIBA Award for Design Excellence, is one of the new flag-ship community academy schools in London, opened by Prime Minister Tony Blair in 2005.

"Working with the team at Mossbourne, we have created a lighting and sound system which is equal to that of many professional theatres. The lighting is rigged onto a flown truss to give the school complete flexibility and we have installed a variety of lanterns to ensure that every angle of the stage is covered. Likewise, the sound system includes sound desks which give direct access and control of the CD/DVD players, the mics and radio mics, to allow students to move around the theatre without losing sound quality,"

As the world waits for his main tour to kick off, Robbie Williams gave fans a hint of great things to come ina series of 'warm up' shows. L&SI's Chris Henry caught up with the crew in Dubai . . .UAE - It's official, the Robbie Williams machine is rolling back into action (following a well-deserved post-Knebworth rest) and boy, is it a slick operation. As the technical teams head to Belgium for more rehearsals and test builds, following a three-week stint at Northern Studios in Wakefield, the tour proper finally kicks off on 9 June at Croke Park in Dublin.

Billed as the 'spring leg' of the tour, Robbie's three South African shows and one in Dubai, with his 'B rig' have been and gone. L&SI met up with the brains behind the scenes, and asked what treats lie in store on the main show, and how on earth do you top KnebworthΩ

Dubai - The fourth annual PALME 2006 show took place on 23-25 of April in Dubai's World Trade Centre. The show's organisers claimed a 30% increase in visitor numbers after the event, so were the exhibitors' palms crossed with goldΩ

The exhibition comprised three individual sector shows, Install, Event 360 and MUSAC. Install unsurprisingly focussed on the installation market, Event 360 targeted those with event and production needs, and MUSAC catered for the musical instrument market. The tiny town of Culdaff boasts a live music venue which is one of the Irish Tourist Board's rising stars. L&SI reports . . .

Ireland - Far up on the craggy, northernmost coast of the Republic of Ireland lies a small and pretty village with two treasures it can call its own. Culdaff (pop. 200), in Inishowen, County Donegal, boasts both one of Europe's top-rated Blue Flag beaches, a perfect golden strand, and, these past few years, one of the island of Ireland's most enterprising live music ventures, the Backroom at McGrory's.

The Backroom, whose seated capacity neatly equals the village's population, is the main reason McGrory's is one of the Irish Tourist Board's rising stars. It's complemented by a 70-covers restaurant with an enviable reputation for fresh locally-sourced cuisine, while the atmospheric main bar serves up yet more food and live music.
