The first intake recently completed a six-month pilot, making use of the existing workforce at Lighthouse to gain creative, hands-on learning experiences.

"It was a unique and fulfilling experience that you don't get in many other places," said one Young Technician. Another added: "The best part was the freedom and opportunity to put what we had been learning into practice, it allowed us to test ourselves and

UK - An Allen & Heath dLive mixing system was recently installed at Zion Christian Centre in Halesowen after a major fire gutted the church's auditorium and destroyed the existing PA system and console in August 2015.

Supplied by Wigwam Acoustics and installed by Midlands-based AV company Centrepiece Productions (whose MD Gareth Davies is a member of Zion Christian Centre), the dLive system consists of a S7000 console and DM48 MixRack supplemented with eight Allen & Heath ME-1 personal monitoring mixers and a ME-U hub.

"Wigwam initially supplied us an Allen & Heath QU-32 digital mixer to get us up and running after the fire in August," explains Davies, "and I and the other sound team volunteers - none of whom are professional engineers - took to it very quickly.

"So when it came to investing in our permanent system it made sense to stick to the Allen & Heath brand and

USA - When Meytal Cohen, the drummer for and founding member of the heavy metal band Meytal, set out on her US tour, she wanted to go big and provide fans with superior audio quality at each venue. In order to achieve the huge sound she was looking for, Cohen turned to DPA Microphones' d:vote 4099D Instrument Microphones to amplify her drum set.

In 2009 at the age of 20, Cohen moved to Los Angeles and studied percussion at the Los Angeles Music Academy. That year, Cohen and some friends recorded a metal violin cover on video of System of a Down's Toxicity, which she then posted on YouTube. A few months later, the video had three million views and Cohen decided she was going to shoot and post 100 more drum covers to see what happened next. Five years later she has more than 120 videos, 140m views and 900,000 subscribers on YouTube, and more than 1.4m likes on Facebook.

Japan - Nexo's STM modular line array has been chosen by one of Japan's most distinguished sound rental companies as its new flagship PA system. The long-established N & N rental house in Tokyo has expanded its extensive inventory of Nexo products in a move they describe as "inevitable".

Based in Ota-ku, Tokyo, N & N has been supplying sound for a wide variety of special events and concerts in a range of venues for over 40 years. Long-term Nexo users, they have regularly updated their systems, from the Alpha Series and PS Series to the Geo S12 Series line arrays. With the release of the STM M28 compact omnipurpose cabinet, the decision was taken to invest in the new modular line arrays capable of handling large venues (2000+ people) and to market this as N & N's flagship system.

N & N's representative director Mr Sato explains, "The timing was right - when the STM M28 was

Switzerland - The summer of 2016 marks a major milestone for both Montreux Jazz Festival and Meyer Sound. When the Festival kicks off its 50th anniversary edition on 1 July, Meyer Sound celebrates 30 years of collaboration with what many consider the world's most illustrious and eclectic annual celebration of popular music.

"Sound really mattered to Claude Nobs," said Meyer Sound CEO John Meyer, recalling the festival's late founder. "I remember distinctly when he came to me and asked how we could make the festival sound better. He had a curiosity about sound and a real desire to create unique and extraordinary experience for artists and audiences."

The 2016 MJF line-up features a host of luminaries across a spectrum of genres, including Muse, Herbie Hancock, Neil Young, Santana, Quincy Jones, Robben Ford, Slayer and others.

UK - The 21st century revival of the legendary Isle of Wight Festival once again launched Europe's season of summer celebrations, with this year's edition benefiting from relatively hospitable weather and the auspicious debut of a new Meyer Sound Leo Family system at the main stage.

Supplied by Wigwam Acoustics of Heywood, the new system effortlessly powered performances by headliners like The Who, Faithless, Stereophonics, and Queen + Adam Lambert for crowds of up to 60,000. Equally important, the linear characteristics of the system coupled with precise directional control kept the festival grounds rocking while significantly reducing bleed into nearby residential areas.

The Leo Family system's control and apparent loudness was appreciated by Vanguardia Consulting, responsible for assuring adherence to festival license conditions. "Isle of Wight has been quite tough over

USA - Danley Sound Labs introduced the TH-50 subwoofer in 2007, and its low-end performance quickly earned it the respect and love of home- and commercial-theatre enthusiasts. Unfortunately, Danley had to suspend production of the TH-50 in 2011 due to supplier issues. Now, happily, those issues have been resolved and thus Danley is resuming production of the TH-50.

"Audiophiles continue to revere the TH-50, and we have had innumerable requests to get it back into production," said Mike Hedden, president and CEO of Danley Sound Labs. "Tom Danley's patented Tapped Horn [TH] subwoofer design seems to compel the laws of physics to do magical things, and the TH-50 seems to leverage the Tapped Horn design for maximum effect. It's a beautiful (and incredibly powerful) subwoofer, plain and simple. We're proud to have the TH-50 back in production."

Italy - Summer is here and with it sun-seekers are heading to beaches across Europe. The location and open-plan layout of beach bars and restaurants can make it a challenge to entertain those who want to drink and dance while keeping other patrons - and the neighbours - happy. But at Italy's Bazzano Beach, a Yamaha audio system has solved the problem.

Located in the tourist resort of Sperlonga, between Roma and Napoli, Bazzano Beach is a bar and restaurant located on the beach of the same name. Founded 12 years ago, it is a popular destination for those wanting to relax by the sea with good food and good music.

Its audio system comprises two main elements - fixed loudspeakers for the venue's restaurant, terrace and the beach in front of the building, plus a movable dance system which covers a bigger area of the beach for the summer weekend events Spiaggia Italiana, which f

Germany - Allen & Heath's dLive digital mixing system has been out on tour with German band, Brings, culminating in a gig staged at the 50,000 capacity Cologne football stadium.

The band is based in Cologne, so the home-coming gig was the largest of the tour, supported by three local bands. The setup included two dLives at FOH, several expanders, and digital splits for the monitor console and OB Van for a live stream and recording.

The dLive system comprised S7000 Control Surfaces with DM64 MixRacks and DX32 expander racks. Dante and MADI network cards were fitted in the MixRack, where the Dante card was provided for the support acts, who were using a GLD-80.

"The Allen & Heath dLive system sounds amazing, the design of the surface is perfect, easy to arrange and also to operate. I've always had the impression that everybody at Allen & Heath knows their job and they kn

UK - Situated on the University of Kent's Canterbury Campus, the popular K-Bar recently underwent a major design overhaul, with the addition of a juice and smoothie bar, and boasting a new state-of-the-art AV system, designed and installed by Penguin Media Solutions. This includes end-to-end Martin Audio CDD loudspeakers.

Notes Dylan Thompson, project manager and system specifier, "With the arrival of CDD I don't need to look elsewhere, which is a nice position to be in. CDD has been a revelation - it's well priced, sounds great and I can spec it for just about anything."

Penguin were awarded the contract by Kent Hospitality, which manages all the university's bars and leisure facilities, having worked for them previously. "We met Keith Williams, head of trading at Kent Hospitality a few years ago now, and he really liked our ideas and approach."

UK - Veteran American sound engineer Ken Newman carried on where he left off in the States when Barry Manilow's One Last Time tour arrived in the UK on its trip around the globe - with Martin Audio's premier MLA providing the arena sound.

Making his MLA debut with Delicate Productions' system on the North American leg, the sound engineer was adamant that he wanted the same production rider in the UK - and his first port of call was Martin Audio rental partner, Capital Sound.

Capital supplied the rig, but unlike the previous dates, the 10 UK shows had the advantage of being run digitally. With MLA tech Russ Cunningham and PA/stage tech Nick Cook in support, the main PA comprised 11 x MLA and an MLD Downfill each side, while the side-fill component started with hangs of 12 x MLA Compact per side but increased to 16 for the larger 20,000-capacity O2 Arena in London.

UK - As the Central Church of the Royal Air Force, St Clement Danes Church on The Strand in London is a living memorial to those who have died whilst serving their country, and it has recently been further restored in preparation for the RAF's 100th anniversary celebrations in 2018.

A major part of the restoration was to install an audio system which would allow a full congregation in the main church and on the balcony to hear every word that is spoken, as well as to enjoy both recorded and live music. But in a Grade 1 listed environment, this had to take into consideration the aesthetic requirements of the building, with speakers delivering quality sound without being obtrusive, and cable runs being all but invisible.

Ashdown AV, a Bose pro partner with extensive experience in introducing discreet audio into heritage buildings, were selected to install a system designed b

Switzerland - Acclaimed as the longest and deepest in the world, the new Gotthard rail link tunnel has just officially opened in Switzerland, with extravagant opening ceremonies taking place simultaneously at each end. These involved elaborate dynamic spatialisation sound designs based around TiMax SoundHub audio showcontrol processors plus a TiMax Tracker system, specified by award-winning designer Thomas Strebel and managed by a team of skilled engineers and operators from his resource company audiopool GmbH.

After almost two decades of construction work, the 57km (35-mile) twin-bore Gotthard base tunnel will provide a high-speed rail link under the Swiss Alps for efficient freight transit between northern and southern Europe. At peak capacity it could handle over a third of a million tonnes of goods per day, the equivalent of 15000 shipping containers.

Soundtrack for a Generation - After a gap of 27 years, Carole King returned to the UK stage to play her classic album Tapestry in full as part of the BST festival in London's Hyde Park. The crowd, who had paid up to £249 for the show, seemed to know every word. And the critics were impressed. "King was in London to perform her 1971 classic Tapestry, in full, for the first time, making history with an album that made history," wrote The Telegraph's Neil McCormick. "Tapestry was the first mega selling album ever, a record that every household with a hi-fi had to own. Comparison might be made with the way another female singer songwriter, Adele, rules the contemporary music world but it would be inadequate. For her moment in the early 70s, Carole King was like Adele, The Beatles and Elvis rolled into one gentle, intimate, heartfelt, feminine package." The Evening S

UK - Studio Two at Abbey Road has been enhanced with cable and assemblies supplied by distributor and manufacturer VDC Trading. Studio Two has been at the heart of popular music since opening in 1931 and was famously home to historic recordings by The Beatles, Pink Floyd, Kate Bush and many more. Its design, warm acoustics and unparalleled history of recording have made it one of the most recognisable and sought after studios in the world.

The purpose of the exercise was to create some isolation booths and a new lounge. This entailed converting a 'technical' room into a large (dividable) room and converting what was the original (1932 - 1957) control room into a smaller 'drums' booth. There has also been a major investment in HD video facilities in studio 2 and throughout the whole building.

UK - Rebound, the new £1m trampoline park in Hull, has been opened by Monkey Bizness, specialists in indoor play centres.

The first in the city, it contains up to 75 trampolines, tumble tracks, foam pits, cafeteria - and a Martin Audio sound system to cover all activities.

Part of a complete integrated audio-visual and lighting package, it was provided and installed by Kent-based Old Barn Audio, who were awarded the contract after carrying out work in previous venues for director, Nick Stevenson.

The brief from the client was clear: that the sound system needed to be as if specified for a nightclub, and should not be bettered by anything else in the area. Therefore OBA had no hesitation in recommending Martin Audio's new patented CDD Coaxial Differential Dispersion installation range.

First, they equipped the ceiling of the large 35m x 40m industrial unit wit
