UK - Part of the Merlin family who operate predominantly in the South-West, the 500-capacity Regal Theatre in Redruth occupies a 1930s art deco building, doubling between cinema and live events.

Local contractors, TruCru, were brought in recently to overhaul the theatre PA, replacing an archaic system with a Martin Audio FlexPoint solution. As a community facility, the new PA needed to demonstrate the versatility to cater for a wide variety of shows – ranging from am dram, touring tribute acts, operatic societies and nationally recognised stand-up comedians, with a high SPL. Most importantly, it needed to banish the pre-existing hotspotting that was evident in a challenging building with a balcony tier and an acoustically difficult ‘stepped’ ceiling above.

France - Val Thorens' renowned nightclub, Malaysia, has undergone a €2.5m transformation to become Malaysia 2.0, all thanks to a video installation overhaul featuring Smode’s real-time compositing and media server platform.

Perched at an altitude of 2,310m, The Malaysia club, established by Jean-Pierre Roux in 1985, is open seven days a week for the entire winter season. Dubbed the biggest dance floor in the Alps, it attracts around 700,000 people per season, hosting over 2,000 partygoers every night for live concerts and DJ sets. After almost four decades, the venue needed a ‘facelift’ to create an identity using digital art to stand out in the après-ski scene.

UK - MT Helmets MSI, 2024 Moto2 team championship winners, wanted its new dual-truck hospitality suite to hold pole position in the MotoGP paddock, so approached Audio-Technica, who recommended Optimal Audio and its commercial audio ecosystem.

Denmark - In the autumn of 2023, Det Musiske Hus, a notable cultural venue in the northern Danish city of Frederikshavn, initiated a project to improve its conventional front and house lighting systems.

UK - Situated in the garden village of Port Sunlight on the Wirral, the historic Gladstone Theatre began life as an assembly and recreation hall with a platform stage for entertainment. The half-timbered and red-brick structure was opened by Prime Minister William Gladstone in 1891 and saw a proscenium stage added in the 1920s. Converted to a theatre in the 1950s, the Gladstone continues to stage a diverse range of commercial productions from an eclectic range of artists.

UK - This autumn saw Cube Studio once again push the limits of storytelling and creative technology, creating beyond the ordinary to bring South Asian director Arvind Jay’s latest sci-fi short, Afterglow, to life. Using Cube Studio’s Virtual Production stage in Berkshire and powered by Brompton Technology’s advanced LED processing, Jay was able to craft an immersive space environment essential to the film’s vision.

Afterglow is a deeply personal project for Jay, a Singapore-born director now residing in the UK. The film mirrors his concerns about leaving a legacy, both in his work and his family life. “My parents worked hard to send me to the UK,” Jay explains, “and I want them to understand and appreciate my work.”

USA - At The Caverns, part of an 8,000ft underground cave passage located a little over 80 miles south of Nashville, designers like Justin Casey have to contend with a lack of level surfaces.

"Nothing there is level," Casey, owner of Helm Projects said of the venue. "That's the first challenge. We have done so many shows at this place, so we know it takes some time and thought to come up with a design that's right for it – but once you do, it's well worth it."

Casey and his team recently created a stunning design for electronica star LSDream's two-day Rave Cave event at the Cavern that played off the venue's intricately craggy features to create looks that flowed seamlessly with the captivating vibe of the performances on stage.

The Netherlands - After over a decade of excavation, preparation, and research, five dinosaurs are now on display together for the first time at the Naturalis Biodiversity Center in Leiden. Among them is the majestic herbivore Triceratops, renowned for its large frill and three horns – a true icon of the dinosaur era.

This exhibition has been brought to life through a lighting design by Tom Verheijen, with equipment and custom solutions provided by Lichtpunt Theatertechniek.

To illuminate the dinosaurs and their surroundings, various Prolights fixtures were used, including the EclProfile FWTU and EclMini CC, which were instrumental in creating a visually stunning experience. Italy - The organisers of Afterlife invited fans to embark on “a captivating sensory journey and unique immersive experience” when promoting their show at the Snai Hippodrome in San Siro, Milan.

The one-day techno event delivered a multi-sensory mix of music and visuals that enveloped fans in a transformative blend of sensations.

USA - Goldsboro, North Carolina, is home to the historic Paramount Theatre. Built in 1882 as an office building, its high Victorian Italianate style was noted for its ornamental features such as quoins, arched windows, and cornices. Over the years, the building has been used in many different ways – including a temporary synagogue, vaudeville theatre, and movie house.

In 1993, the renovated building was donated to the City of Goldsboro, and the city managed the theatre for the next 12 years. Early one morning in February 2005, a fire destroyed the Paramount Theatre. The loss of the theatre was personal to many members of the community. However, the theatre was rebuilt and officially reopened in February 2008. The Paramount Theatre’s auditorium has a capacity of 500, with seating for approximately 350 on the lower level and 150 in the balcony.

USA - Custer Road United Methodist Church in Plano, TX, faced a challenge: its sanctuary's traditional architecture and high ceilings, while beautiful, were creating audio issues that prevented the congregation from fully connecting during services. Recognising this, church leadership wanted to improve audio quality to foster a more engaging worship experience.

Namibia - Liefde By Die Nam (LBDN) is a yearly event dedicated to Afrikaans music. 2024’s Liefde By die Nam took place in Windhoek, the capital of Namibia on 21 September, and event production specialists dB Audio Namibia brought the party to life by leveraging groundbreaking audio solutions supplied and supported by Stage Audio Works Namibia.

UK - Unusual Rigging has played a pivotal role in the technical setup for Cameron Mackintosh & Nick Grace’s Les Misérables: The Arena Spectacular World Tour.

Unusual took on the full design of the rigging infrastructure for the entire show, as well as manufacturing and assembling a custom mothergrid, which supports the lighting and scenic elements for this ambitious production.

France - Set along the northern edge of the Pyrenees, Pau is a city in southwestern France located some 85km from the Spanish border. A total population of less than 80,000 enjoys a rich cultural life with a range of theatre and concert venues, among them the Foirail.

A former livestock market, Foirail opened in 2022 and quickly established itself as a vibrant cultural space hosting a varied programme of cinema, jazz and classical music concerts, theatre and dance.

“The Nexo Geo M6 system originally installed at the Foirail was perfect for the venue at the time,” reports technical director Eric Vilchez. “However, the popularity of the theatre grew very quickly, and we soon found ourselves hiring in supplementary sound equipment for larger shows, particularly live music.”

UK - The Rose Theatre Kingston, the largest producing theatre in south-west London, has become the first performing arts venue in the UK to install Martin’s MAC Viper XIP, adding 30 fixtures to its house rig and replacing the theatre’s previous MAC Encores as its principal moving-head fixture.

Emma Sayers, head of lighting & stage at the theatre, first encountered the MAC Viper XIP at a private demonstration at the 2023 PLASA Show. After a direct comparison with the older MAC Encores, she was impressed by the superior performance of the new fixtures. “The colours are so much more saturated, and it does pastel colours nicely too. And because you can do the high contrast colours and the subtle colours it works for what we do here,” Emma says. "It was ticking all of the boxes."

UK - Producer, recording engineer and mixing engineer, Freemonk, has enhanced his nearfield monitoring setup with the addition of a Chord Electronics Alto. Freemonk is using the headphone and nearfield monitor amp to drive the NS-10 monitors at Friary Studios.

The building is highly regarded by the people of Berlin, and to preserve its rich history, it has just undergone an extensive renovation period that’s seen the entire interior transformed. UK - Taking place at The Vaults beneath Waterloo Station, Rhythm and Ruse offered theatregoers an immersive night of magic, music and revelry. Harkening back to the prohibition era, the show took place in a ‘Speakeasy’ and allowed audiences to experience astounding close-up illusions from mere inches away, live music from a four-piece jazz band, a secret society of magicians devised by immersive theatre experts as well as food and drink across the evening.

The show featured a lighting design by up-and-coming designer Skylar Turnbull Hurd, with this being her first time lighting a show of this scale and with a full LX team. With its reputation for both supporting young lighting designers, as well as supplying immersive theatrical productions, White Light (WL), a d&b solutions company, was called upon to provide the show’s lighting fixtures.
