UK - Ian Herbert has been elected the new Chairman of the Society for Theatre Research. The Society provides a meeting point for all those interested in the history and technique of the British theatre, offering its members annual publications, the journal Theatre Notebook and many other privileges. It also organises an annual series of public lectures, whose speakers last season included David Wood, Oliver Ford Davies and Professor Peter Thomson. It is responsible for a number of research grants, and awards its annual Theatre Book Prize. The Society's president is Timothy West.

Herbert, founder and now consultant editor of Theatre Record, is also President of the International Association of Theatre Critics. He edited the last three editions of Who's Who in the Theatre, and contributed to or edited all but one of the International Theatre Institute's reviews The World of Theatre. A visiting Professor of Mississippi College, he also lectures regularly to institutions such as Birkbeck and Goldsmiths' Colleges, London University, and St Mary's University College. His articles have appeared in scores of theatre journals worldwide.

On his appointment, he said: "I welcome this opportunity to continue the half century and more of tradition that the Society represents. It is my aim to increase the Society's membership by reminding the theatre researchers of the UK just how much we have to offer. I'm also hoping to develop the good relations the Society enjoys with the theatre research community in this country at home and abroad, by establishing closer and more fruitful contact with both individuals and organisations."
