UK - The King Arthur Film Premier took place at the Empire in Leicester Sq, with Utopium lighting up the façade of the cinema and the event. Afterwards the cast partied 'old style' at the Guildhall - done out in full Medieval regalia, including imitation forest and banquet hall lit with 48 x S/4 profiles, 36 x Fresnels, 60 x Birdies, 60 x Par64 Floor cans and a large High End Systems rig of Studio Spots, Studio Colours and Studio PC Beams run from a collection of Whole Hog II's.

Two days earlier Spiderman 2 was premiered across the Square at The Odeon with McFly performing on the balcony of the cinema. The after show party, at Billingsgate Old Market, hosted seven areas - the Spider Web Dance Floor and the City Scape being the largest. The curved trussing from two Orbit stages were used to provide 'spiders legs' coming down from the roof - lined with Pixeline. On both these eve

USA - Lighting designer Graeme Nicol specified nearly 50 Vari*Lite automated luminaires for the lighting rig on Sarah McLachlan's current North American tour, but plans to use movement with caution: "Just because they're moving lights, doesn't mean they have to move," Nicol says. Sticking with that basic fundamental principle, Nicol made use of the smooth pan and tilt, the soft colour-fade capability and the fixtures' CYM colour-mixing system, rather than the fast strobe functions, the quick-snap colour changing or the fast movement. "There's a bit of movement, but it's not unnecessary movement," Nicol explains. "If there's no point in making the fixture move, I don't do it."

The automated lighting rig consists of 23 VL3000 Spot luminaires, 12 VL1000TS ellipsoidal reflector spotlight units and 14 VL5 fixtures. All of the Vari*Lites were provided by

UK - Following the release of the Quick Start DVD, DiGiCo has now released the full version of its D5 Live user manual giving users individual tuition wherever and whenever required. The D5 Live is an intuitive, simple-to-use console and engineers have found that they can go out and use after minimal tuition, according to DiGiCo. However, the company says there are a multitude of features within the D5 that may not be so immediately obvious.

The D5 Live User Manual DVD gives users their very own DiGiCo workshop, always at hand in a format that is less bulky than a traditional printed manual. The information is divided into seven logically defined sections that are fully navigable, allowing instant access to any chapter. There is also an offline version of the DiGiCo website, so if the DVD is played on a PC or Mac, information about other products is available, or access to a pd

UK - Bandit Lites UK has continued its busy summer season, which includes supplying UK lighting designer Jonny Gaskell with equipment for recent shows by Orbital. The band announced - before the release of their latest Blue Album - that they would split after 15 years of musical innovation at the forefront of the UK dance scene.

Their last regular UK gigs were two shows at Brixton Academy - for which Gaskell designed a lightshow that could also be taken in to various festival situations - including a headline slot on Glastonbury's Other Stage - for the band's final UK appearances. These were undertaken prior to a farewell European festival tour that's currently underway.

Gaskell wanted to ensure the band ended their groundbreaking career in a blaze of visual glory. The use of 53 James Thomas Pixelline LED battens was integral to his design. He framed the upstage area with 12 r

UK - The Liverpool Culture Company staged the largest ever firework display in the city to celebrate the Centenary of its famous Anglican Cathedral, described as "one of the greatest buildings In the world" by John Betjeman. The awesome 20-minute display - designed by Ian Woodroof of Fantastic Fireworks - is the largest fired off a single building so far this year in Europe.

The display, which was free to anyone within sight of the Cathedral on the Sunday night, broke new technological grounds with the live broadcast of the specially-composed soundtrack by Liverpool City Council's local radio media partner, 96.7 FM Radio City. This meant the show was enjoyed not just by a traditionally placed audience close to site, but by anyone tuning in to the radio and able to see the Cathedral - with the sonic advantages of no time delays! The innovative staging idea opened the ev

UK - Le Maitre's new Cryo Jets were put to the test at the recent premiere of the new Thunderbirds movie at the Empire cinema in London's Leicester Square. The Cryo Jet is a CO2 system which shoots out powerful jets of dry ice. Le Maitre's chief pyrotechnician, Mark Thomas, designed the show, using six Cryo Jets and a barrage of Line Rockets to escort the celebrity guests up the red carpet and into the cinema, creating a spectacular effect.

32 of the three-second Line Rockets from Le Maitre's Prostage II range of professional pyrotechnics were used, running on 190ft lines across the front of the Empire. Line Rockets travel at high speed along a wire, emitting a loud whistling sound and creating a tail of brightly-coloured sparks. They were fired in volleys of eight and four, at 10-minute intervals. The doors of the première opened at 1.00pm and the guests were inside for 2.00p

UK - White Light Events recently continued its long-standing relationship with event producer The European Group, providing lighting and electrical services for the summer season of events at the Honourable Artillery Company in the City of London.

Designed along the theme of 'Latin Quarter', the events took place in and around a series of marquee structures spanning over 100m x 50m and capable of housing up to 1,500 seated guests. White Light Events' lighting designer Jason Larcombe specified a dynamic system that lit both the exterior and interior of the marquees. A sophisticated nightclub lighting installation formed the central focus of the venue, designed to support both live bands and DJs and work alongside a complex audio-visual system. Larcombe dressed the rest of the venue with projections across the floor and ceilings, achieving a hot and vibrant atmosphere.

USA - 2004 marks a 10-year anniversary at Martin Professional for Eric Loader, sales director of the company's top subsidiary sales department based in Florida. Loader's career started in a DJ supply store in the San Francisco bay area, followed by stints in Los Angeles with Towards 2000 (T2k) and American DJ Supply. In 1994 he was hired by Martin Professional to open a sales office in LA to serve the entire west coast. Three years later, he transferred to the Florida office to assume his current role of sales director.

Reflecting on his time at Martin Professional, Loader commented: "When I began, the RoboScan 1220 was our top product and DMX was just starting to be offered in our products. Martin was a strong player back then but certainly not a market leader. Then we went into expansion mode with changes in leadership, an expanding product line, reorganizations, lawsuit

Germany - Hundertwasser - The Musical is a theatrical homage to Viennese painter Friedensreich Hundertwasser, from the pen of librettist Rolf Rettberg, with music by Konstantin Wecker. Working on many levels, the episodic drama traces the life story of the painter, architect and artist activist, who died in 2000. Hundertwasser's sailing ship, the Regentag, is both the pivot and central point of the musical. An ocean crossing serves as a metaphor for the life journey of the cosmopolitan artist.

Lighting designer Frank M. Kasch attaches importance to the fact that the lighting design does not develop any direct momentum, but instead acts to support scenes and images and reflects the internal attitude of the participants. As structuring elements, Kasch employs side and backlighting, deep cross-lighting and only a small amount of front lighting.

In total, Kasch deploys jus

UK - Entec Lighting has supplied LD Tony Austin with production for PJ Harvey, who rounded off her recent festival tour with her own show at London's Brixton Academy. It was Austin's first tour with PJ Harvey, the latest in a string of top notch artists on his CV, and he came highly recommended by one of the musicians playing on her album.

Austin's relationship with Entec as an equipment supplier goes back several years: "I really like the independence and great atmosphere at Entec. Your project gets the best service and attention at all times, you can speak directly to the people who are handling the account and nothing's too much trouble," he says, adding that Entec also offers good value. His lighting brief for PJ was challenging - almost the antithesis of what you'd expect from a rock 'n' roll artist - no flashing lights, no smoke, no visible moving lights, no foll

Denmark - The Cyclo 04 DMX Wallwasher is a recessed fluorescent wallwasher with RGB color mixing which generates both white and colored light. Suited to a wide range of retail applications, it also provides an interesting solution for the office environment.

DMX controllable, the Cyclo 04 DMX Wallwasher feature extended color control and excellent white and colored light quality and represents a breakthrough for its ability to successfully compress color-changing technology into an architectural fitting, say the company.A full range of white and colored light is achieved by combining four dimmable T5 fluorescent lamps, the primary colors red, green and blue in a process known as additive color mixing, and an additional neutral white tube of 4000K. When installed at a setback of 1/3 the height of the wall, colored light is distributed extremely evenly and smoothly. Colour distrib

UK - The BBC's The Nation's Favourite Prom at the Royal Albert Hall was screened on BBC1 on Sunday 25 July. Le Maitre provided the specal effects for the finale of the event, the Halle Orchestra's performance of Tschaikovsky's 1812 Overture, conducted by Mark Elder. Le Maitre's Tim Haddon used 16 Giant Theatrical Flashes and 16 Medium Concussions to simulate the firing of the cannons. This was followed by a row of 19 10x12 Stage Gerbs for the final 10 seconds of the piece.

The Halle Orchestra's performance was hugely powerful and the effects thrilled a packed Royal Albert Hall. Haddon used the Pyrodigital system for the absolutely precise timing necessary, and Mark Elder was reported to be exceptionally pleased with the combination of the pyro with the music, and its accuracy.

USA - The Air Zoo in Kalamazoo, Michigan, is a 90,000sq.ft air museum which also incorporates a couple of full-sized carnival rides, advanced flight simulators, a Space Shuttle simulator and a 60-seat, sense-surround 3D theatre which recreates a World War II bombing mission, and the world's largest indoor mural, at 32ft high and more than 1,000 feet long.

Because Air Zoo is a 'living' museum, lighting the hybrid facility was a challenge for lighting designer Bill Hunter of Hunter-Leet & Associates, a Kalamazoo- based lighting design, consulting and contracting firm. With displays that were often moving - only the carnival rides have permanent homes in the museum - Hunter needed a lighting system that was flexible and moveable as well. He couldn't be tied down with a traditional rack-mounted dimming system. Instead, he used 48 six-pack IPS dimmer boxes from Entertainment Technolo

USA Elation's popular Waterfall DMX water-simulation fixture has been upgraded. John Lopez, sales manager for Elation Professional said: "Not only are the Waterfall 250's water-like effects much brighter as a result of a new 250W lamp, but we've also put more controls into the hands of users. This allows you to create a wider variety of visual effects and focus on particular colours to set different moods. Having this greater control makes the Waterfall 250 a much more versatile effect."

Using a DMX controller, operators can now individually control the speed and rotation of the Waterfall 250's two textured glass wheels. Additionally, separate controls determine each wheel's direction of rotation, so users also have the option to independently spin the wheels clockwise or counter-clockwise.

With all of these improvements, the company say that the Waterfall 250 is no

UK - Since its launch this spring, Avolites' eDMX wireless control system has been utilized in a huge variety of projects and locations around the world with great success. AP Services put the system through its paces at the 'Bauma 2004' exhibition in Germany at the Munich Messe convention centre, for a high profile Perkins Engines launch - the first eDMX use outside of the UK.

The show finale revealed the engine itself, mounted on a revolve. There were no spare slip rings available, so getting data to the equipment on the revolve was tricky. As the show was repeated up to 20 times, manual cable management was out of the question - so Avolites' eDMX was an obvious choice. The radio DMX link controlled a mixture of James Thomas Pixelline battens (run in 54-channel mode), Martin MAC 250s and Atomic 3000 Strobes, with the balance of the rig controlled via a conventional, wired, sys
