Belgium - L&SI has learned of the recent death of Marc Phlippo, one of the founders, along with his father Jos, of Phlippo Showlights - which grew to become one of the largest lighting production rental companies in Belgium. Marc, who was especially well known in Belgian TV and theatre, died early last week after losing a two-year battle against cancer. His funeral took place on Saturday 21 June.

The system, which is ideal for use in small theatres, schools and amateur dramatics, is based around a simple 2-preset layout making it straightforward to use. China - Asian dealers and distributors of some of Europe's leading pro audio and lighting brands have signed up to participate in the debut Prolight+Sound Shanghai exhibition (15-18 October 2003). For Chinese pro audio and lighting retailers, rental companies, sound system engineers, DJs, broadcasters, event organizers and venue operators, Prolight+Sound Shanghai will offer an alternative sourcing venue right at the heart of China's entertainment capital, and a demonstration of the premium foreign-made equipment that is available for export to China.

Canada - Matt Stoody has joined Fourth Phase, PRG's Toronto subsidiary, as account executive. Working out of PRG's Fourth Phase Toronto location, Stoody will sell and manage all Group services - including lighting, audio, projection and scenery - to new and existing accounts throughout the Northeast United States and Eastern Canada.

Prior to joining PRG, Stoody played key sales and operations roles in projects as diverse as last year's Papal visit to Toronto (World Youth Day 2002), Disney's The Lion King and concert tours by Alabama and Styx.

UK - London-based Light Projects Group has appointed Neil Young as divisional manager for the Australian-manufactured Intralux range of lighting systems. Young has spent the past eight years working for a major lighting manufacturer and Light Projects believes that his expertise and experience will help advance the Intralux name in the UK. His understanding of landscape, architectural, indirect cove and pelmet lighting are also welcomed by the company, which specializes in providing lighting technology and systems to those markets.

Since the two organizations formed an alliance last year, Light Projects reports an overwhelming interest in these high quality and innovative products. The range of luminaires includes the latest Kove family of T5 systems, which range form low-cost base products, through to fully-controlled RGB colour changing systems.

UK - Pro Technical UK recently won the Theme magazine national award for the 'Best use of technology' for their JBL installation at Susumi in Derby. The Theme awards were held at Mezzo's in London on 3 June. Pro Technical designed, installed and commissioned the sound, light and video project using the latest technology, fulfilling the design brief provided by the owner of Susumi, Russell Davidson.

Davidson needed the sound system to have high fidelity reproduction but didn't want it to be so loud that people would have to shout to be heard; the lighting also needed to be unobtrusive. Company director and designer Richard Anderson, who managed the project, says: "For the sound system we chose JBL. The new Control 29AV is a compact unit that can deliver clarity even at high volume."

Denmark - Seelite has supplied lighting, project management and design for The Roskilde Festival's two largest stages - Orange and Arena - for many years, and will return again this year. Metallica, Björk and Iron Maiden will all perform on the Orange stage, for which Seelite will supply the lighting and truss systems, plus two large PA support wings.

The company is also supplying lighting and roofing installations to include more than 35 moving lights and 230 generic lights for The Midtfyns Festival 2003. Among this year's artists are REM, Moloko, Badly Drawn Boy and Swan Lee.

UK - DHA has picked up a design award from the International Association of Lighting Designers (IALD) for its work on the Magna Centre in Rotherham - the redundant steel works which was transformed into a visitor attraction devoted to science. The company created the acclaimed Electric Arc Furnace feature, as well as designing the architectural lighting for the Great Hall at the Centre. Co-director David Robertson accepted the award at the IALD ceremony in New York with joint winner Jonathan Speirs of Speirs & Major.

UK - One of the more interesting developments to come out of this year's Glastonbury Festival was the launch of a UK trade union for road and backstage crew. The formation of the Roadcrew Provident Syndicate (already short-handed to the Roadies Provy) was announced at a special session at Glastonbury on the Left Field Stage on Friday 27 June.

The union will be a branch of the GMB, one of the UK's biggest trade unions, and will provide financial advice and support to its members, as well the usual union benefits. You can read a full report on this in the July issue of Lighting&Sound International - out next week.

USA - Lighting Designer Jeff Ravitz has been nominated for an Emmy Award by the Pacific Southwest chapter of the National Television Academy, and has also been honoured with a 'Platinum Best of Show' Aurora Award.

The Emmy nomination, Ravitz's third, is for his work on the Christmas special, Carols By Candlelight, presented by Channel 4 San Diego and carried by the Cox Cable Network. The Aurora Award was presented for the lighting design created for Univision's El Grito, the Mexican Independence Day special broadcast live from the steps of the Los Angeles City Hall.

Ravitz, a partner in the LA design firm, Visual Terrain Inc, previously received a Primetime Emmy for his work on the Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band's HBO special.

UK - A few years ago The Cabinet War Rooms (CWR) in London were opened to the public. These are the rooms, in a former government storage basement, from which Churchill and his ministers continued the work of government during the bombing raids of World War II.

A team of specialists, including the Imperial War Museum (of which CWR is a part), architects HOK and managing contractors Bovis Lend Lease, recently opened up additional areas that have been hidden since the war - a move which also paved the way for an extension of the education facilities and the creation of a new conference and meeting area.

All eyes were on Nashville, Tennessee, for the celebrations where Bandit Lites provided the lighting for several events, including the concert by ZZ Top on Saturday June 28th. UK - DHA Lighting may be best known for its gobos, however it's the company's fibre optic effects which are in use on the new smash-hit musical Jerry Springer - The Opera at the National Theatre.

DHA supplied six harnesses, with 405 fibre tails and six DHA Lightsource Mark 2 light sources, which were specified by set designer Julian Crouch in collaboration with lighting designer Rick Fisher and the Lyttelton Theatre's chief lighting technician Paul McLeish.

Switzerland - Situated in idyllic surroundings at the edge of Lake Geneva and with breathtaking views of the Alps, the town of Montreux in Switzerland is a destination guaranteed to draw visitors in their masses. But while its offerings of vineyards and skiing are crowd-pullers in themselves, the famous jazz festival, held in the Montreux Centre de Congrès for two weeks each July, is one of the most popular events on the town's calendar.

While the festival features predominantly in its annual schedule, the Montreux Centre also hosts a diverse range of other events, from conferences and exhibitions, to product launches and various other concerts and festivals. Consisting of two main buildings, the older of the two recently underwent an extensive refurbishment with ETC brought on board to provide the lighting and dimming control systems.

USA - Celine Dion's spectacular new show has opened at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas. Designed by Franco Dragone, creator of some of Cirque du Soleil's most critically-acclaimed shows, A New Day is the showcase production of The Colosseum, a newly-built 4,000-seat theatre attached to Caesars Palace, which took two years to build and cost $95 million.The new show will run five days a week, 40 weeks a year, for three years.

France - For the first time in its 110-year history, the Eiffel Tower has become a permanently illuminated landmark on the Paris skyline, following the success of the New Year's Eve Millennium celebrations in 2000.

Paris Mayor Bertrand Delanoë was guest of honour at the inaugural event on the 21 June, timed to coincide with a popular music festival in the Champs de Mars gardens surrounding the tower. At the stroke of midnight, the 500,000-strong local festival audience, together with viewers of the live broadcast from television station France 2, watched as the 1000s of light bulbs that make up the installation were turned on. The Eiffel Tower shimmered in blues and golds behind the festival stage, where the new Vari*Lite Series 3000 luminaires, mounted on a circular truss, were focused to shine on the tower, adding dynamic colour for the impressive ceremony.

Holm joins Martin from Dentact, a Danish dental products firm, where he was responsible for development, sales and marketing of new dental products internationally.
