Australia - The first orders for the new Minim lighting control desk from Australian lighting equipment manufacturer, LSC Lighting Systems, will leave the factory in June. The Minim has been specifically designed to compliment the maXim range, filling a void for the entry level user both in features and price. Attractively styled and utilising the familiar programming and playback system popular on all LSC desks, the Minim delivers a very easy to use platform with quick access buttons to all major functions - no menu driven systems.

Based on a typical theatrical style layout with 2 presets of 12 faders that can be used in a manual control level or a memory recall mode, the Minim comes into its own by switching the lower bank of preset faders between 'wide' preset - a further extension of the first 12 faders to a total of 24; and 'Playback' masters. The Playback masters can concu

Russia - The year 2003 heralds the 300th anniversary of the city of St. Petersburg in Russia, and the historic Mariinsky Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre, home of the world-famous Kirov Opera and Ballet, is celebrating with the installation of new Selecon Pacific zoomspot ballet booms!

The promise of performances by such prestigious ballet companies as the Royal Ballet, London; the New York City Ballet and the Hamburg Ballet as part of the festivities, provided the push that Vladimir Lukasevich, the Mariinsky's renowned resident lighting designer had been looking for. With support from his colleagues from the visiting ballet companies the funding to replace the old, ill-equipped ballet booms was granted. As with most venues the ability to multi-task is vital and as the booms would have to be multi-purpose - Opera as well as the Ballet - and the Pacific zoomspots fit the bill in

UK - CP Sound, the Staines-based sound and lighting installation specialist, has designed and fitted its latest installation with the first of an innovative new concept in LED lighting technology, which has been under development for the last few months.

The fixture is a screen encased in a custom aluminium extrusion, supplied as a 10mm thick panel, capable of unobtrusive integration into any environment. It’s made from laser-etched acrylic material and side-lit by DMX controllable LED strips that criss-cross the light across the screen surface. When the light is caught in the etchings, a prism effect directs it evenly across the panel fascia.

The first installation of this new technology has just been completed by CP Sound in the chill-out area of the exclusive Eclipse wine bar and bistro in Brompton Road, London. CP Sound was approached by entrepreneur Mike Filpy, owne

UK - Despite slightly inclement weather, which somewhat hampered the charity fund-raising hot-air balloon rides which were due to take place, White Light's recent Open Day proved a huge success with all who attended.

Originally intended as a chance for visitors to catch up with the latest products and services offered by the various members of The White Light Group, the Open Day expanded into something of a mini-trade-show with many of the companies whose equipment White Light hire or sell, attending to demonstrate their latest products. Visitors to the Open Day could therefore make side-by-side, hands-on comparisons between, for example, ETC's Emphasis, the Strand range, High End's Wholehog III, the MA Lighting grandMA, the Compulite Vector and Martin's Maxxyz lighting controller.

Beyond the battle of the lighting controllers there was plenty to see: the many companies repres

The collaboration between the IRAD and JTE teams has resulted in Pixeldrive - the RADlite control system being applied to JTE’s revolutionary Pixel Range of LED fixtures.

The new control system allows the synchronization of digital media to JTE’s high brig

UK - PSD Electronics have carried out a full sound and lighting installation in a converted cinema in Brierley Hill, West Midlands.

When Derek Bater purchased the former 1000-capacity Eclipse nightclub with partner Edwin Amor he immediately contacted his old friend Phil Soltys at PSD. One of Soltys’ first jobs had been at the famous Tall Trees in Newquay many years ago when Bater had been the owner - and the two men have remained lifelong friends. The previous owner had taken it out of its reincarnation as a bingo hall, and when Messrs Bater and Amor inherited the venue - which they’ve renamed ‘The Club’ - they recarpeted and refitted the place. Taking advantage of the extra custom introduced to the Dudley area by the nearby Merryhill Shopping Centre, they are now presenting a full sound and lighting spec in a venue that hosts four bars.

UK - Electric Fly Productions, run by Nick Jevons and Philip Winward, was denied the opportunity to completely rerig a two-day live event when the rain washed away the opening day of BBC Radio 1’s One Big Weekend at Heaton Park, Manchester, recently. The pair had been looking forward to combining festival experience with the tools Jevons was first exposed to by Screenco at their Illuminated Video Workshop in autumn 2000.

Radio 1 had stepped up its One Big Sunday events from last summer to include two entirely different production platforms. In the 10,000-capacity Kayam theatre tent, Jevons’ crew was ready to break down the projected Saturday night ‘in-the-round’ 3D dance production format overnight and replace it with a conventional stage (and three-plane video backdrop) for a rock concert on Sunday - until rain forced the cancellation of the Saturday sho

Big screen specialists Screenco meanwhile, joined forces with Nocturne Productions - the tour’s contracted video production company - to provide an inventory of 25mm LED displays, which were staggered down the Via dei Fori Imperiale in front of the famous landmark.

The former Beatle played for almost three hours, and for the majority in the audience, their main contact with the legendary performer was via the five 18sq.m screens, the stage action being relayed to the Screenco displays via Nocturne’s production
