USA - Video panels frequently serve as fascia in shows on the Vegas Strip. That's one reason why Michael Smalley and Gabe Fraboni of Twin Designs opted notto use them this way in their standout design for Pitbull's Time Of Our Lives Tour at The Axis in Planet Hollywood.

"Video panels are great, and we use them all the time," said Fraboni. "But the opportunity to design a show for an artist of Pitbull's calibre in Vegas requires us to do something different. He's dynamic and the dancers are amazing, so we needed to give them an area to perform on that could convey the sleek, sexy, and sophisticated theme of the show while giving us lots of options to experiment with."

The two designers found what they were looking for in the Nexus 4x4 COB LED panel from Chauvet Professional. "The Nexus panels really reminded us of all the old-school Vegas hotel facades and sig

USA - Aerosmith's Steven Tyler played a special high profile concert in the David Geffen Hall at New York City's Lincoln Centre called Out On a Limb, in support of Janie's Fund, his new philanthropic initiative to serve abused and neglected girls. Lighting the show was LD Nathan Alves, who used 12 Robe BMFL Spots to produce most of the major signature looks.

It was Nathan's first work with Tyler and the focus was on emphasizing the intimate environment and the delicate subject matter inspiring Janie's Fund and the launch concert. So all the production was centred around the star as he related the narrative of who he is and his personal journey to where he is now.

"Everything I did lighting-wise was designed to be unobtrusive - hiding the technology and highlighting Steven," explained Nathan.

European Guidance - National Campaign for the Arts has launched a guidance document about the sector and its relationship to the European Union. Chair Samuel West said he hoped it would "stimulate debate and encourage deeper thinking". It comes as Arts Council England has also published guidance outlining how funding for the arts can be connected to the European Union.

NCA's document covers areas including funding, artistic exchange and export, and talent development. Because of its charitable status, it cannot express a view on whether the UK remains in the EU or leaves.

But West said, "We do think there are questions that need to be considered carefully by those who care about the arts. For example, if the UK were to leave the EU, how could our arts organisations continue to attract and retain world-class talent? How might our own artists benefit from opportunities to wo

Sweden - Nearly 100 Robe BMFLs - 88 x BMFL Blades and six BMFL Spots - proved invaluable to Fredrik Jonsson's lighting design for the 2016 Eurovision Song Contest which was staged in the Globe Arena, Stockholm with a capacity live audience of around 10,000 plus an estimated 180m television viewers worldwide.

Fredrik was lighting his second ESC in three years, having also been LD for the 2013 edition in Malmo. He was also the lighting operator for the last ESC staged at the Globe Arena in 2000.

Significantly, the BMFLs were an essential tool for lighting the show properly. "I needed a high intensity spot with good colour rendering and a framing shutter system that enabled proper key-light from long throws," explained Fredrik. "The BFML Blade fit that specification to the mark, hence their presence on the rig."

Fredrik's production lighting design was crafted together wi

Jonsson, a freelance LD with a vast fund of experience in lighting the highest profile live TV shows, worked with a team of four lighting programmers utilising eight grandMA2 light consoles. USA - Great fashion, as the designer Christian Dior once observed, requires a happy balance between accents and a base. So too does great fashion show lighting. LD Daniel Thibault of Alpha Production Group demonstrated this point recently by blending the warm white light of the Ovation E-190WW with the rich colours of the Rogue R2 Wash at Art 2 Wear, an annual fashion show that celebrates the work of North Carolina State Design School students.

Thibault used the Chauvet Professional fixtures to create complementing and contrasting looks on the fashion show's runway. "I wanted the warm white light from the Ovations with no colour gels, because I felt this gave us the kind of natural look that worked best for most of the fashion designs," he said. "When I needed something cooler for the harder edged styles, I used the Rogues to overlay light on top of the Ovation light. The two
