European Guidance - National Campaign for the Arts has launched a guidance document about the sector and its relationship to the European Union. Chair Samuel West said he hoped it would "stimulate debate and encourage deeper thinking". It comes as Arts Council England has also published guidance outlining how funding for the arts can be connected to the European Union.

NCA's document covers areas including funding, artistic exchange and export, and talent development. Because of its charitable status, it cannot express a view on whether the UK remains in the EU or leaves.

But West said, "We do think there are questions that need to be considered carefully by those who care about the arts. For example, if the UK were to leave the EU, how could our arts organisations continue to attract and retain world-class talent? How might our own artists benefit from opportunities to wo

China - The 1500-capacity Tangshan Grand Theatre, situated within Tangshan's World Park Expo in China's Hebei Province, has installed a TiMax SoundHub-S32 audio showcontrol and spatial sound processor, whose first job was to bring a historic war drama very boldly to life.

The production required dynamic surround sound effects of the cacophony of war, including thunder and rain alongside the bullets, bombers and explosions.

The theatre management were impressed with the quality and realism of the effects, reporting that audiences had been shocked by the sound effects, and that some theatre-goers felt as if they had been transported back to the war zone itself.

The TiMax was fed into a main PA system front left and right with rear left and right surrounds as well as ceiling speakers to deliver 3D sound effects to maximum dramatic impact, reinforcing the sound from above.

UK - Proving that 'science isn't just for geeks', It's not Rocket Science launched on ITV in February, with each of the six episodes packed with thrilling large scale experiments.

Fronted by actor Ben Miller, stand-up comedian Romesh Ranganthan and presenter Rachel Riley, the fast paced series succeeded in bringing science to life. ITV's Kalpna Patel-Knight said, "To really captivate the audience, we planned some large scale experiments in an aircraft hangar - and each one had rather complex rigging requirements. Unusual Rigging was known to ITV as they handle all the large scale rigs on Ant and Dec's Saturday Night Takeawa

Sweden - Nearly 100 Robe BMFLs - 88 x BMFL Blades and six BMFL Spots - proved invaluable to Fredrik Jonsson's lighting design for the 2016 Eurovision Song Contest which was staged in the Globe Arena, Stockholm with a capacity live audience of around 10,000 plus an estimated 180m television viewers worldwide.

Fredrik was lighting his second ESC in three years, having also been LD for the 2013 edition in Malmo. He was also the lighting operator for the last ESC staged at the Globe Arena in 2000.

Significantly, the BMFLs were an essential tool for lighting the show properly. "I needed a high intensity spot with good colour rendering and a framing shutter system that enabled proper key-light from long throws," explained Fredrik. "The BFML Blade fit that specification to the mark, hence their presence on the rig."

UK - Former X Factor winners Little Mix are currently promoting their third album, Get Weird, with a major tour of Europe, Oceania and Asia. Playing largely arenas and summer festival dates, a pair of DiGiCo consoles are adding some black magic to the mix.

Monitor engineer Craig Pryde has used DiGiCo consoles since 2008 and has worked with Little Mix since they won the X Factor three years later. "The SD10 sounds great. It's extremely flexible in its set up and having so many output busses available makes it really easy to provide all the extra mixes required for this kind of show, including underst

"When they bought the building they opted to rent a system to get a better handle on what worked best in the space," explains Brandon Rinas, sales engineer for Sound Image. "The room is very wide, not very deep and has a low ceiling, so they definitely needed something that could provide focused energy. At the same time the church was interested in stereo coverage with every seat getting the same audio experience."

The review/demonstration process was fairly rigorous with the church evaluating a number of sound reinforcement systems before making a decision. Fortunately, James Hurley, the new
