USA - NAB has announced the cancellation of the upcoming NAB Show 2021, which was due to take place in Las Vegas from 9-13 October. The annual convention/exhibition, which in 2019 reported attendance of 91,000, is one of the largest events on the calendar for broadcasters and their technology providers. In recent weeks, the show had suffered exhibitor withdrawals - including Sony and Canon - due to the spread of the delta variant of COVID in the US, with the organisers opting to scrap the in-person event in favour of offering select virtual sessions through its Amplify portal.
“For more than a year, we have worked tirelessly to bring our industry together safely in Las Vegas at NAB Show," say the organisers in a statement. "Unfortunately, the pandemic and surge of the delta variant has presented unexpected and insurmountable challenges for our global community.

UK - Moving and LED lighting manufacturer Robe enjoyed the energy and enthusiasm of industry professionals reconnecting in person at the 2021 PLASA Show in London Olympia last week.
Robe took the opportunity to showcase a raft of recently-launched products, returning to the show as the headline sponsor as in previous years. This underlined the brand’s confidence in the UK market moving forward and ramping up generally, and in PLASA Show as a strategic point of convergence for key players. The Robe stand comprised a large meeting area out front and a substantial demo area ‘back-of-house’ proved a streamlined hub for meeting, networking, and in-depth product-related discussions and demonstrations.
A timecoded lightshow utilising the newest products was based on a mixtape of West End production numbers. There was a heavy emphasis on the previewed T11 Profile fixtur

UK - With 4,500 miles clocked up on the rental van and 350 engineers, end users, customers and rental companies seen in 29 days across 27 locations, the 2021 DiGiCo and KLANG roadshow has completed its run.

“When our world slowly started to come back, we began to get an increasing number of requests from engineers to pop into our HQ in Surrey for some refresher training, so we thought ‘why don’t we come to them instead?’, which is

Insurance Fears - Further guidance about the government’s recently announced insurance scheme for live events has been released, which experts have warned “confirms all the worst fears producers had”. The scheme, which will run until September next year, has been criticised for being too narrow in scope to apply to most theatre productions as well as prohibitively expensive.
The Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport has published an outline of the rules for the £750m scheme, prompting concerns that it will not help most theatre producers, who face ongoing risks of disruption, cancellation and closure. The guidance confirms that productions are protected only when they have been forced to cancel, abandon, relocate or postpone as a "direct result" of the introduction of new or amended COVID-19 laws.
This means that cancellations caused by self-isolation

UK - On Saturday 4 September, a cohort of industry professionals cycled from SFL in Reading to PLASA Show at Olympia London to raise money for Backup, the technical entertainment charity and mark the return of PLASA Show.
Fourteen cyclists made the journey, representing Autograph, Avolites, Backup, Collaborative creations, Creative Technologies, Event Decision, PLASA, SFL, SLX, TSL and White Light. One team cycled 40 miles direct to London, while the other traversed the challenging Surrey Hills - together they have so far raised over £1,300, with donations still coming in.
BikeFest follows several industry bike rides in recent years coinciding with PLASA Show, which have all raised funds while promoting mental health and support. In the wake of the COVID lockdowns, the 2021 cycle felt more pertinent than ever.
PLASA’s managing director Peter Heath, comments:

UK - The PLASA Show returned to Olympia London from 5-7 September, receiving high acclaim and marking a return to normality following the 18-month closure of the live events sector.
As the first entertainment technology tradeshow in two years, the PLASA Show 2021 co-located with the ABTT Theatre Show and succeeded in reuniting the industry for three high-spirited and productive days in Olympia’s Grand Hall.
Even though the number of attendees was reduced this year, they remained top quality and similar to previous years: 2/10 were company owners or directors and half were specifiers or final decision-makers. Theatre and touring were most prominent with one third of those attending working in production or venues.
Anticipation was high as the doors opened, with a steady stream of visitors keen to check out the next generation of products and catch up with colle

USA - On the outskirts of Cincinnati, the city of Blue Ash came to life this summer with the sounds of Carmen, Tosca, and The Barber of Seville reimagined for Cincinnati Opera’s Summer at Summit series, held outdoors from 11 July to 1 August at Summit Park. It featured singing and music from internationally renowned guest artists, the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra and the Cincinnati Opera Chorus. The outdoor setting, a choice driven by the Covid pandemic, allowed for an under-the-stars experience, yet with all the grandeur of grand opera theatre sound, thanks to the use of L-ISA immersive technology provided by L-Acoustics.
A system co-designed by Jonathan Burke, who directs the sound design programme in the School of Theatre, Film and Television at UCLA, incorporated L-Acoustics’ broad range of technologies. Sixty Kara II enclosures were conf

Australia - The Melbourne Recital Hall on the corner of Southbank Boulevard, with its steel and glass lattice façade resembling a honeycomb, and playfully designed white frame defying rigid conventions, attracts much interest.
Inside, the multi-award-winning venue, the aesthetics are just as impressive, only now with a more serious bent. The walls of its shoe box shaped main theatre, for example, are covered with routed timber. The 3D textured panelling isn’t only stunning visually, as it also optimizes acoustics.
In 2021, the 12-year-old music venue’s lighting system was upgraded, when it had Showtools International install a collection of Chauvet Professional Rogue and Maverick fixtures.
This move was the culmination of a quest by the Melbourne Recital Centre’s lighting team, led by head of operations Jasja van Andel, to find products that would enhance

Europe - The debate over what LED system produces the best white is a difficult one to resolve. Is crisp brightness and power most important? Or the ability to create a variety of shades and deeper colours? In the end, it all depends on your needs.
Alistair Smyth and Frederik Afif on the 9 September Elation Coffee Break will scrutinize the Fuze Spot and Fuze Profile with framing, versatile LED moving heads with RGBMA colour mixing systems that can mix any shade of white a designer desires, or just as easily mix deep saturates or soft-field pastels.
The Fuze Spot and Fuze Profile’s carefully tuned RGBMA LEDs and high CRI (92) ensure accurate color mixing and color rendering while delivering a powerful white output of over 10,000 lumens. Shades can be fine-tuned to match the environment in a variety of ways - virtual colour wheel, virtual color temperature, magenta/gr

More than 40 installations and artworks will be on show including a large-scale replica of the Earth by artist Luke Jerram and an illumination of lightning bolts on the front of Leeds Civic Hall by artist Seb Lee-Delisle, the city council said.
Last year a considerably slimmed-down festival saw lasers mounted on seven city centre buildings because of coronavirus and social distancing rules. Organisers say this year's event "will mark a return to a more familiar format" but the prog
