UK - XL Video supplied a completely integrated video package to the 2009 Download Festival at Donnington Park, Derby.

This year XL's brief included 72 hours of live internet streaming, a broadcast spec, HD camera system and screens package for Stage 1. Other services facilitated by XL included an HD record for Live Nation TV and VH1, MMS/SMS relay to screen, plus a standard definition camera/PPU package for Stage 2.

XL's project manager Chris Saunders - working on his sixth Download - led the video crew of 34. In recent years, Download's requirement for video/IT entertainment services has expanded voraciously - in line with the demands of its info-hungry audience.

France - The municipality of Berre l'Étang, 30k northwest of Marseilles, is dominated by a a 155 sqm lake, and was once home to an important naval air station. Occupying the air station site is a contemporary urban park that hosts a lighting project aimed at recreating the area's bygone era. The large public space encompasses the banks of the pond, walking paths, roads and a large open field.

Pierre Nègre of L'Atelier Lumière has created the special lighting concept for the shores of the park. The concept, which proposes various lighting perspectives that are 'readable' from multiple vantage points, is meant to impart a feeling of comfort and guidance. Discrete lighting gently exposes the pathways and road areas while more dynamic illumination washes the esplanade in colour according to the speed and direction of the wind.

UK - grandMA lighting consoles continue to make their mark in the UK theatre world, with a grandMA touring on the new version of the musical We Will Rock You, produced by Phil McIntyre Entertainment.

Lighting designer and video director is Willie Williams. The console was specified and programmed for the tour by Dave Sadler and is being operated on the road by chief LX Simon Sherriff. The lighting was initially programmed at Three Mills Studios, London ahead of the first UK date at the Manchester Palace Theatre by Sadler and Associate lighting designer Richard Pacholski using the new grandMA 3D visualiser.

USA - Milos QuickTruss showed how to overcome the challenges and engineering requirements of temporary structures for recent roof projects at two major baseball stadiums - Washington DC's Nationals Park and Baltimore's Oriole Park at Camden Yard.

The temporary structures served as television broadcasting booths complete with lighting, a complex map of cabling and electrical wires, and a weather-proof canopy to keep commentators dry during rainy innings.

The bespoke broadcasting booths were designed by Creative Dimensions, a full service exhibition and sign specialist based in Cheshire, Connecticut. Doug Carabillo, their director of business development, needed to cover all bases when assembling experts from many different industries. UK - Yorkshire County Cricket Club (YCCC) will host the fourth npower Ashes Test starting on 7 August 2009. All the action will be replayed on Headingley Carnegie Cricket Ground's new giant 102m2 digiLED Ld10S screen. The 16m (w) x 6.4m (h) screen replaces the previous scoreboard and is the largest LED video display in a UK sports venue.

The displayLED team completed installation of the digiLED screen just in time for the first Nat West One Day International between England & West Indies earlier this year. Since then, the screen has been in use for professional cricket events in the Liverpool Victoria County Championship, The Friends Provident Trophy, The Twenty20 Cup and the Nat West Pro40. In addition the screen has been used to add value to grass roots cricket events such as the Drax Cup for Under 9's.

UK - The Manchester International Festival, which ran from 2 to 19 July this year, hailed itself as "the world's first international festival of original, new work and special events". Events included a collaboration between Manchester's symphony orchestra The Hallé, Mancunian composer Joe Duddell and one of the city's favourite rock bands, Elbow.

In keeping with the local talent theme, Elbow front of house engineer Danny Evans worked with Manchester-based sound solutions provider Audio Alliance, who supplied all audio and communications requirements for the show at Bridgewater Hall, as well as for a relay to Manchester's waterside Castlefield area.

UK - Following the success of the 2007 Beautiful World tour, Brilliant Stages were again chosen to bring to life the imaginative and dramatic stage designs for Take That's Circus Live Tour 2009.

The combined creative talents of show producer, Kim Gavin and set designer, Es Devlin devised a circus-themed set for which Brilliant Stages created a total of 5 stages, in addition to several pieces of staging wizardry, for the 20 UK stadium dates.

The main Performer stage, 18m wide x 17.8m deep with tech tunnels beneath and access steps on either side, incorporated six lifts: a piano lift, two double band lifts and a puppet lift for the show finale.

Two satellite stages with weather-proof tech bunkers beneath were linked by ramps to the main stage and housed sound kit and instruments. A 6m-deep C stage, also with tech bunkers, was located at the front of the performer

UK - The Yamaha LS9 digital console continues to be a success in regional theatres across Europe. One of the latest UK venues to adopt it is Scotland's Adam Smith Theatre.

Located in Kirkcaldy, on the north bank of the Firth of Forth, the Adam Smith Theatre serves a wide catchment area which ranges as far afield as Edinburgh, Stirling and Aberdeen. Previously a council-run venue, it is now run by the Arts & Theatres Trust Fife, along with the Rothes Halls (Glenrothes), Lochgelly Centre (Lochgelly) and Carnegie Hall (Dunfermline, not New York - although both were founded by the same philanthropist).

Austria - On 2 May, the Tyrolean ski resort of Ischgl marked the end of the winter season with its annual Top of the Mountain concert. This year it was the turn of Kylie Minogue to entertain an audience of 18,000 in the open air at an altitude of 2,320mamid the spectacular mountain scenery of the Idalp, whilst Global Bright Media of Vienna was commissioned by the Poznau Tourist Association to provide media equipment for the event.

The audiovisual service provider from Vienna flew a total of 70 Lighthouse R16 modules to create a backdrop for the headline event. The Global Bright Team transported the equipment in 45 cases with gondolas to the intermediate station before using snowmobiles to ferry them the rest of the way to the stage. After the show, the process was reversed, though this time there was an extremely heavy snow fall to complicate matters.

UK - The newly constructed Microsoft campus at Redmond, WA includes an interactive experience: Each major building lobby features a 12ft wide x 27ft high curveLED transparent video display, driven by custom Mode Studios interactive software, with Hippotizer media servers as an integral part of the control system.

The installation was designed and specified by Callison Architects of Seattle, in conjunction with Mode Studios' Bob Bonniol. Scott Bokowski, the project producer, headed up installation and system integration along with Larry Darling of Epic Production Technologies. Show Control systems, control racks and audio systems were designed and provided by Electrosonic and include four Hippotizer Stage media servers. Custom media content and live, real-time interactive control was provided by Mode Studios.

UK - Adlib Audio sent out two Soundcraft Vi6 digital mixing consoles - and two sound technicians to babysit the systems - when they took over the production of feature stages at this month's Latitude Festival.

In charge of the Uncut Arena was the experienced Walter Jaquiss, while simultaneously the same furious schedule, with back-to-back changeovers, was taking place in the Sunrise Arena, where Otto Kroymann was based.

While bands were turning round within 15 minutes at the stage end, sound engineers were setting up their patches with equal alacrity at front of house. In each case a Soundcraft Vi6 digital mixing console awaited them alongside their two mentors.

UK - Pearce Hire successfully completed the first of a four year contract this July, supplying the lighting and power to all 23 shows across seven stunning forest sites. Artists including Paul Weller, The Doves and Simply Red were among the sold out headliners.

The Forestry Tour requested standardised production at each of the sites to make it easier and more effective for the artists touring between them over a six week period. To achieve this the company added to its ever growing stock of lighting equipment by investing in Avolites 24-channel ART 2000 dimmer racks and expanded its already large rental stock of Adam Hall cable ramp. All generators were well maintained to deliver constant event power and all power circuits were tested to give the highest level of safety and reliability.

Once in a Lifetime - Acts including U2 and Aretha Franklin are to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the US Rock and Roll Hall of Fame at two concerts. The gigs, set to take place in New York in October, will also feature inductees including Bruce Springsteen, Eric Clapton and Metallica. Both Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel and rock trio Crosby, Stills and Nash are lined up to perform together. The concerts have been billed as "once in a lifetime" events. Jan Wenner, chairman of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation, said they are "designed to celebrate the artists and their music".

The proceeds from the concerts will go towards permanent funding for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation and Museum, established in 1984 by Atlantic Records founder Ahmet Ertegun who died in 2006.

USA - For U2's current tour, designer Mark Fisher created a gigantic claw shaped truss, lighting designer Willie Williams specified nearly 200 PRG Bad Boys for one of the largest sets ever built for a touring rock show, and City Theatrical's SHoW DMX helped it all happen by transmitting wireless DMX to the far corners of the stadium.

The show's central claw shaped truss has a centre spire that rises over 50m above the show deck. Around the stadium are truss towers that contain follow spots and PRG Bad Boy moving lights.

One of the many challenges the tour faced was to reliably get data to the towers without having to run kilometres of cable around the stadium. Wireless DMX with a proven track record of high data fidelity, minimum radio footprint, and system reliability was needed, and since the tour travels across the globe in outdoor arenas and stadiums it needed to be intern

Germany - The theatre performances of the Vorpommersche Landesbühne Anklam on the Ostsee-Bühne (Baltic Sea Stage) Zinnowitz have become a popular tradition during the holiday season. The content of the plays is the history of the town Vineta which is, according to the legend, sunken into the sea of the island Usedom. The performances, a mixture of acting, dancing and music, are strikingly supported by light, pyrotechnics and laser effects.

Germany - Since the beginning of this year, Monty Python's Spamalot has been staged in Cologne, having previously played New York, London and Las Vegas.

Hugh Vanstone, who was responsible for the lighting design in London, also delivered the design for the show playing at the Musical Dome in Cologne, which was programmed by associate lighting designer Stuart Porter. For this task Porter relied on a grandMA system solution.

During production two grandMA full-size and a grandMA ultra-light were used, with one grandMA full-size left in control of the show. "Working with the grandMA was a breeze, especially because of its networking capabilities," reported programmer Marcus Krömer. "This also enabled the in-house programmer to learn the desk while I was programming."

UK - For the fourth consecutive year, Adlib Audio supplied a sound system and crew to the King Tut's Wah Wah Tent at T in The Park Festival at Balado, Kinross-shire, Scotland.

The line-up included Daniel Merriweather, Jason Mraz, The Pet Shop Boys, the Noisettes, Friendly Fires, Jamie T, The Saturdays and many more over the three days.

James Neale led the Adlib team of five and also oversaw the FOH operation. With Ben Booker keeping monitor world in check, the omnipresent Richy Nicholson looked after the stage & patch, assisted by Otto Kroyman and Michael Flaherty. The operation was project managed in the Adlib offices by Dave Jones.

This year, the length of the King Tut's Wah Wah tent was extended by about 30m, making the tent approximately 120m long, which needed additional PA and delay stacks to ensure an even sound all around.

UK - For the third year running, ETC is supplying lighting control systems to Universal Arts in three of the Edinburgh Festival Fringe's leading venues.

In previous years, Universal Arts has used ETC's Congo lighting control desks. However, at PLASA Focus in April, ETC launched Element. This new desk caught the attention of Universal Arts production manager, Anthony Newton, who approached ETC's Jeremy Roberts to explore the possibility of using Element to light all the shows in the Universal Arts Festival of international theatre.

Newton says: "Element seemed like the perfect desk for Fringe venue application. It has the software of the successful Eos and Ion range with simplified features to ease user control, making the basic functions easier to navigate with greater hands on fader control. It's a much friendlier looking desk to the inexperienced or unfamiliar operator.

UK Nearly 600 drummers got their chance to be in the global spotlight on 13 July 2009, as they raised funds for a leading UK multiple sclerosis charity, setting a new world record into the bargain. And helping to keep them all in time was a Yamaha M7CL console.

Part of the National Rock and Pop festival, which also incorporated the Guitarfestand Drumfest trade shows, the Stick It To MS world record attempt was hosted by comedian and actor John 'Jazz Club' Thomson - himself a drummer - and saw a total of 582 drummers in Birmingham's National Indoor Arena attempt to achieve a new world record of tub-thumpers playing in the same place at the same time.

UK - The iTunes Festival relocated to The Roundhouse in North London this year, with over 60 artists playing live at this free event, which runs throughout July.

With bands ranging from Oasis, Kasabian, Franz Ferdinand and Snow Patrol at the commercial end to acoustic performers like Newton Faulkner, quirky performance artists with wide dynamic ranges (like Bat for Lashes' Natasha Khan), leavened with some good old fashioned hard house and R&B it was important that the event's experienced sound engineers, Dave Roden at FOH (here deployed as system tech) and Will King down at the stage had digital mixing environments on which incoming engineers could hit the ground running.
