UK - Following on from the success of last year's series of Theatre Lighting Workshops, Selecon UK has announced further sessions for 2005. These technical lighting workshops, organized especially for professional theatre technicians and lighting designers, offer a hands-on experience and the opportunity to have a closer look at Selecon's unique range of Award-winning theatre luminaries.

Venues and Dates for 2005 are: 21 March at the ADC Theatre, Cambridge; 24 March at the Tyne Theatre, Newcastle; and 5 April at the Clywd Theatre, Mold, North Wales. The sessions will last from 10.30am to 3pm, with lunch included. The workshops are free to all theatre technicians and lighting designers.

Canada - An Adamson SpekTrix compact line array system has been permanently installed at the new Cats Theatre in Tokyo, Japan. The Andrew Lloyd Webber musical Cats has enjoyed successful theatrical stagings across the globe, and although the Broadway and London productions have completed their extended, record-breaking runs, the popularity of Cats in Japan has never faded.

Running in the country since 1983, Cats, performed in Japanese by the Shiki Theatre Company, has been presented in a number of major cities including Osaka, Nagoya, Fukuoka, Sapporo, Shizuoka, Hiroshima and Sendai. Pulling in more than 5.7 million people over the course of almost 6,000 performances in Japan, the musical has returned to the city of Tokyo after an absence of eight years.

UK - International dance music magazine iDJ has announced what it calls "the biggest interactive DJ show to ever take place in the UK". Aimed at producers, VJs, promoters, and DJs of the bedroom or professional varieties, iDJ Live 05 will fill two halls at the Wembley Complex into the "ultimate DJ and dance music paradise" on 3-4 June, say the organizers.

The event will combine music from dance music's superstar DJs, industry workshops, a record fair and a main exhibition showcasing the latest DJ equipment from the market's leading brands. Visitors will be able to try out the latest DJ technology and sound and light systems.

USA - At the Las Vegas Hilton, High End Systems products have been installed at the new Barry Manilow Theatre - which opens on 24 February - for his year-long engagement, Barry Manilow: The Music and Passion. PRG Las Vegas is supplying the equipment, which includes six DL1 digital light fixtures, four Catalyst Pro media servers, 19 x.Spot and 24 Studio Color 575 moving lights, and control from a Wholehog 3 console.

UK - Once again it was standing room only at some of the five seminars during this year's ISCEx 2005 event in Watford Tuesday 22 February, according to the event's organizers, the Institute of Sound and Communication Engieneers (ISCE). The 23 specialist companies exhibiting their latest products and services reported good business from around 200 visitors, say the organizers, who also reveal that ISCEx 2006 is already planned for 28 February 2006.

USA - The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) - the organization which awards the famous Oscars each year - plays a much wider role in the day-to-day workings of Hollywood. As a large organization holding many meetings and conferences, the Academy recently undertook an expansion and modernization of its main Los Angeles conference room, which includes the installation of Sennheiser' ME36 condenser microphone.

UK - The official opening of Shearer's Bar at Newcastle United's St James Park ground on 12 February was marked in grand Geordie style with guitar legend Mark Knopfler, with fellow Dire Straits member Alan Clark on keyboards, played a live version of Knopfler's 'Local Hero' film theme to a very enthusiastic home crowd. The 'Local Hero' connection comes from the fact that the song is played at every Newcastle United home game as the players take to the pitch. After agreeing to help out, Knopfler needed a PA system to enhance his own backline. USA - The latest move in the ongoing LED patent dispute between Super Vision Inc and Color Kinetics Inc was the filing this week by Super Vision of a motion for summary judgement against Color Kinetics. The motion, which includes nine affidavits from witnesses against Color Kinetics, alleges that the founders of Color Kinetics, George Mueller and Ihor Llys, were aware of the existence of prior art relating to their LED products before they filed their own patent applications. Among the nine witnesses against the company is Jerry Laidman, the Nevada-based lighting innovator who created the Saturn colour-changing LED effects in the late 1970s, and of whose products Mueller and Llys were allegedly aware (see L&SI November 2004 to read more on the background to the controversy). UK - To celebrate its 25th year in business, Walthamstow-based specialist lighting manufacturer Light Engineering is organizing an unusual prize draw: 5,000 of their customers have been invited to enter to win a giant 30" mirror ball, which includes around 27,500 individual mirror pieces. UK - One of the first feature-packed Denon DN-D6000 dual CD/MP3 players has been fitted into the high-profile Bar M near Piccadilly Circus, by Ed Manwaring of EM Communications. Owned by Glendola Leisure, Bar M acts as an annexe champagne lounge to CC-Club - on the site of the former Alien War at the Trocadero. EM Communications won the contract to fit the sound, based on their past knowledge of the site, knowing that the bar had to be open for midweek daytime trading, reverting to a dance venue in its own right Thursdays through Saturdays. USA - A High End Systems (HES) Catalyst Pro media server is kickstarting the heart of Motley Crue's Red, White & Crue: Better Live Than Dead 2005 world tour. The two-hour show, featuring classics and new numbers, reunites after six years all four original members of the band Nikki Sixx, Vince Neil, Mick Mars and Tommy Lee.

The lighting team includes LD Justin Collie of Artfag, lighting director Kevin Cauley and programmer Nathan Wilson, with extra pre-tour assistance from HES programmers Brad Schiller and Nicholas Militello. Czech Republic - Summit Steel has finished an ambitious rigging project in Prague, working for production company Jigzaw, which involved design and build of a substantial rigging infrastructure and supply of equipment and crew, for the European Sales Meeting of Stryker Corporation - one of world's largest multinational medical device companies.

The event took place over three days and across five venues in the city, with Summit working in two locations - the Industrial Trade Fair Palace - a beautiful art nouveau exhibition centre dating from 1891, and the more contemporary Hilton Congress Centre. It was Summit's first event for Jigzaw; production manager Chris Venn asked them onboard after working with Summit on the 'Music on Fire' classical spectacular event at Sandhurst Military Academy in summer 2004.
