USA - The Venetian Resort-Hotel-Casino on the Las Vegas Strip is currently undergoing a $250 million expansion project that will soon add over a thousand new suites and 150,000sq.ft of supplementary meeting space to the already palatial complex.

The new meeting facilities, in particular, are comprised of three large boardrooms, 19 meeting rooms and three 14,000sq.ft. ballrooms, each of which may be split into 14 individual meeting rooms. To accommodate the demanding audio DSP and routing requirements for a project of this magnitude, Michael Naylor, systems design engineer for The Venetian, created a system primarily based around BSS Audio's PS-8810C Prosys processor. "The CobraNet-equipped Prosys units are really the heart of our audio system," says Naylor. "By using The Venetian's Ethernet and fibre backbone, we're able to send audio from any of these new meeting

UK - Visitors to this year’s Daily Mail Ideal Homes Exhibition can’t fail to notice the giant centrepiece of the exhibition, the 16m high ‘Tower of Time’. Commissioned by the exhibition’s organizers, and designed by Andy Johnstone of Johnstone Design Partnership, the four-sided mirrored obelisk showpiece was built by exhibition set construction experts ESS.

"The actual construction was extremely complex," said ESS’s Jeff Burke, "as there’s not a single perpendicular truss or right angle in the entire structure. We used 228m of LT Tower Truss and 24 specially designed and fabricated angled frames to allow the truss sections to interact."

"The outer covering was 700gsm blackout fire retardant pvc, printed on one side to a design by Andy Johnstone," said ESS project manager, Rob Smalldon. "The finished p

USA - The Seattle Opera House, home to two of the most prestigious and world-renowned performing arts organizations - Pacific North West Ballet and Seattle Opera - is currently undergoing complete renovation works worth $125million. The dramatic refurbishment commenced in January last year and the newly named Marion Oliver McCaw Hall is due for reopening in June this year.

According to the Opera House’s artistic directors Kent Stowell and Francia Russell, the passage of time and millions of visitors have taken their toll on a building that has received no major repairs to either its mechanical, technical or performance spaces since the late 1920s. The new 2,890-seat auditorium has been redesigned to be an aesthetically stunning and state-of-the-art performance hall worthy of housing Seattle’s world-class performances for years to come.

UK - The Live Floor Show, back for a second series on BBC Scotland with new host Dara O'Briain, is a blend of comedy, music and entertainment recorded in front of a live audience that goes out on Saturday nights. Glasgow-based audio specialists Sound Acoustics were approached to provide the sound requirements, and having invested in a Nexo Geo system last year (supplied by Fuzion), the company’s Tommy Gorman was keen to put it through its paces in a TV recording studio environment.

"Essentially what we're providing is the PA for the audience, so it's like a mini-concert set-up," explained Tommy. "We're flying six Geo S805s with two CD12 subs per side driven by Camco Vortex 6 amplifiers with control from Nexo's NX241 digital controller. It's one of the cleanest-sounding PA systems I've heard, and of course its size gives it a huge advantage in a situation lik

UK - If you want confirmation of how tough the market is, then look no further than the latest findings from industry analysts, Plimsoll Publishing Ltd. Their latest report confirms that zero growth, sliding profits and escalating debts have pushed over a third of the UK audio industry to the brink of failure.

Plimsoll's annual financial health-check of the top 268 companies in the UK sound equipment industry reveals that consolidation will be essential as supply is currently outstripping demand. Plimsoll 'rates' every company in the industry based on its overall financial strength. Ratings are given as Strong, Good, Mediocre, Caution or Danger. Alarmingly, 48% of companies rated have now deteriorated in overall financial strength from last year's ratings. Perhaps even more disturbing is that 58 companies are experiencing their second year with a 'Danger' rating. For these compa

"It also includes hands-on time learning the routines and sequences for measuring and adjusting systems in live situations. There's a lot to learn over the five days, as it's the mostintensive training course Meyer offers.

UK - The Moving Light Company was chosen by the English National Opera at the London Coliseum to supply the automated lighting required for its production of The Handmaid's Tale, which opened this week. This is the first time that moving lights have been used in a production by the English National Opera.

Adapted from the novel by Margaret Atwood, The Handmaid's Tale is set in the America of the future, where the government has been overthrown by a religious dictatorship. The production was premiered in Copenhagen in 2000, where the creative team of director Phyllida Lloyd, designer Peter McKintosh and lighting designer Simon Mills made use of the Royal Danish Opera's automated lighting system. Having decided that the use of moving lights - as movable, high-intensity, colour-changing discharge sources - was essential to the look of the production, talks began with

UK - Entec Sound installed a large d&b system - including the new long-throw C3 speakers - into London’s Royal Albert Hall for last week’s six-night Teenage Cancer Trust event. This was the first time the C3 has been used in this high profile venue. The TCT shows, featuring some of the UK’s top bands and performing artists, were organized by Harvey Goldsmith and a hand-picked production team. The aim was to raise funds and awareness for the charity, which is greatly supported by Roger Daltrey.

Entec’s innovative system design was a collaboration between their own Tristan Johnson and d&b’s Ralph Zuleeg. The pair designed and flew the PA and set up the system, before leaving the running and day-to-day tweaking to Entec’s crew chief Ritchie Gibson. Johnson explains that the RAH was the ideal venue to put the C3 through it’s paces in terms o
