USA - A compact yet effective lighting rig, comprised exclusively of ADJ fixtures, was deployed for a hometown performance by techno DJ Stacey Pullen. Taking place on the patio outside Detroit’s TV Lounge nightclub, Pullen played a mammoth ‘open to close’ DJ set with dancefloor illumination provided by ADJ Jolt Bar FXIP, Vizi Beam 12RX and Vizi Wash Z19 fixtures.
The longest running nightclub in Detroit, TV Lounge is the spiritual home of electronic music in Motor City. Throughout the summer, the venue’s indoor space is occasionally augmented for special events by transforming its patio into an open-air dance floor with the city skyline providing an impressive backdrop.
The task of carrying out this transformation from a technical perspective falls to ART Visuals, the recently formed lighting arm of well-established Detroit audio production and integration company Audio Rescue Team. ART Visuals was formed following the acquisition by Audio Rescue Team of Ryan Richards Visuals. The latter company’s eponymous owner has joined Audio Rescue Team as lighting & visuals manager and was responsible for designing, programming, and operating the lighting for the Stacey Pullen show at TV Lounge.
At the heart of Ryan’s design was ADJ’s versatile Jolt Bar FXIP linear LED fixture. This IP65-rated luminaire offers huge output as well as the creative potential of brilliant bright white strobe/blinder LEDs combined with multi-zone colour wash LEDs in one versatile unit. It features a central strip of 112 x 5W cool white SMD LEDs, surrounded on both sides by a total of 672 x 0.3W RGB colour mixing SMD LEDs. This allows the same fixture to generate intense white strobing effects as well as vibrant colour washes.
For the Stacey Pullen show, Ryan deployed four fixtures on a front truss, to illuminate the crowd, and an additional two units behind the DJ position to provide back light.
“I love the Jolts, they’re just so bright,” states Ryan. “I use them all the time. You can't beat the bang for the buck they deliver. With the strobe in the centre and RGB on the outside you can do so much with them. You can use them for a strobe effect, a colour wash, for eye candy pixel effects. They're literally one of my favourite fixtures on the market today.”
To create aerial effects for the event, Ryan utilized 10 of ADJ’s Vizi Beam 12RX dedicated beam luminaires. Despite having been recently superseded by the Vizi Beam CMY – a similar fixture but with the added advantage of CMY colour mixing – the Vizi Beam 12RX continues to reliably serve venues and production houses, such as ART Visuals, that chose to invest in it.
“In Detroit, you can tell it’s a Ryan Richards show if there are a lot of Vizi Beam 12RXs, as loads of beams are kinda my thing and the 12RX is my go-to,” comments Ryan. “The output is crazy bright; they really punch through any background wash and create really crisp aerial effects.”
Completing the lighting rig for the event were four Vizi Wash Z19 automated wash-zoom fixtures.
