USA - Larry Eschelbacher, J. R. Clancymanager of controls engineering, has been promoted to the position of director of engineering.

In his new role, Eschelbacher will supervise both the controls engineering and mechanical engineering departments at Clancy. His responsibilities include both off-the-shelf products and custom jobs for performance spaces of every size.

Eschelbacher came to J. R. Clancy in 1994 to manage the company's controls department. Since his arrival, he has designed controls for more than 1,000 motorised rigging projects, from simple up/down operation to complex systems with more than 300 motors. Some of the projects in Eschelbacher's list include the just-completed Carmel Performing Arts Centre in Indiana, the Winspear Opera House in Dallas, Alice Tully Hall

UK - Pulse is to continue its new product drive in 2011 with the launch of two ranges to cover public address amplification. The MA and SA series from Pulse offer basic public address amplification suitable for a host of venues without requiring large budgets for install, says the company.

The models are all designed within standard 2U rackmount chassis to ensure compatibility with existing installs, the amplifiers also feature the standard mic & line inputs required for a mixture of sources.

USA - Chauvet has added two members to the COLORado line of products, COLORado Range IP and COLORado Ridge IP.

Both indoor/outdoor wash lights feature RGBWA colour mixing. The use of red, green, blue, white and amber LEDs offer more colour mixing and better colour rendering. Additionally, both feature five distinct dimming curves, an ingress protection rating of IP66, a pressure-equalizing Gore valve, colour temperature presets from 3,200 K to 10,000 K, built-in automated programmes, and a durable, heat-dissipating housing. London video and projection services specialists Bluman Associates has used advanced projection mapping techniques to create virtual stage sets for the event.

Produced by Brand Events, Top Gear Live is the live arena show for the award-winning TV programme Top Gear. Featuring stunts, special effects and blockbusting driving sequences, the show packs in pyro, noise and spectacle.

USA - When the resident orchestra at the Carmel Center for the Performing Arts in Carmel, Ind, arrived for its first rehearsals in the Palladium, the players experienced extraordinary sound quality - made possible by acoustical specialists Artec Consultants and the rigging experts at J. R. Clancy.

Artec's plan called for multiple motorised acoustic canopies and acoustic curtains that can be adjusted to change the room's response. Acoustic canopies are usually made of wood, but the Palladium required an unusual material for such an application: large panels of clear glass. The glass keeps the canopy from masking the Palladium's intricately decorated domed ceiling. The glass panels vary in size and thickness, measuring an inch at their thickest points.

USA - Lighting Programmer Seth Robinson selected the Martin M1 console to control the concert and television lighting for Farm Aid, the annual benefit that supports and educates people about the importance of family farm centered agriculture. Lighting design for the event was by Stan Crocker with Bandit Lites again supporting as lighting vendor.

"I started using Martin consoles in 2004 with Sting and have been using them ever since," Robinson commented. "I have programmed nearly every modern lighting console available and there are things I love and hate about all of them. I have found over the years that the Martin consoles consistently match my programming style. Naturally, I went with the M1 because I am familiar with it and because it is a terrific desk for television."

UK - Newly-formed company Light Emissions, which made its debut at the ARC Show 2011 in London yesterday, promises to introduce "new standards in large-scale LED video-based graphics to architects and interior designers".

With the technology already established in the entertainment sector, the new start-up, led by the highly experienced Peter Ed, has optimised its new low- and medium-resolution RGB tile system, known as Art, for the wider commercial markets, including museums, casinos, retail and cruise ships.

Ed, and former G-LEC colleague Sergej Mironov, who spearheads Light Emissions' R&D programme, will also display the new system at ISE 2011 in Amsterdam in early February.

USA - Liberty AV Solutions has appointed Alan Richards as the company's new Eastern director of sales.

Now responsible for overseeing all aspects of sales activity conducted throughout the region, Richards comes to his new post with over 20 years of experience within the AV industry. Formerly with Jerusalem, Israel-based Kramer Electronics, where he served as VP of sales for the US market, Richards will make New Jersey his home base of operations on behalf of Liberty.

Richards effectively replaces Liberty's former Eastern director of sales Dan Reich, who has taken on new responsibilities within the company as its sales operations manager. In this capacity, Reich will assume day-to-day management of all zone managers throughout the US, order entry, and be working closely with internal sales operations revolving around purchasing, marketing, and finance.

The purchases include 300 of the latest Robe moving lights, including the first 60 LED Wash 600s off the production line in the Czech Republic; 100 Robe 600 spots and 100 Robe 600 washes, plus an additional 40 Robin Beam 300 and Beam 700 units; 12 Robert Juliat Lancelot 4K Arena followspots, supplied by Robert Juliat's distributor in the UK, White Light, and 60 Liteware Chrome high output LED up lighters supplied by GDS.

India - The end of November saw a prestigious music conference - Soundbound - held in Mumbai, with a range of live performances for participants to enjoy after the business of the day. The first two nights featured gigs by Shaa'ir + Func, one of India's most successful indie bands, mixed on a DiGiCo SD9, the first to be deployed on the Indian sub-continent.

Soundbound and the associated live shows were sponsored by the British Council. It was part of the long-term SoundPad project, bringing together high profile names from the Indian and British music communities to engage in workshops, where everything from music technology and concert photography to good touring practises were discussed. Entry to the sessions was free and the whole event was enthusiastically received.

Australia - When AV company Scene Change decided to upgrade their radio microphones they opted for the Shure UHF-R series.

"We needed to increase the number of radio microphones and frequency band in the business," said Vicken Hekimian, director of Scene Change Sydney. "We also needed to be able to properly assess available frequencies in real time. The Shure UHF-R series spectrum analysis gave us that ability.

USA - On November 11, 2010, the biggest night in Latin Music, the 11th annual Latin Grammy Awards, aired live to a worldwide audience from the Mandalay Bay Events Centre in Las Vegas. Behind the scenes, lighting designer Carlos Colina created his own technical and artistic achievement through a lighting design using 124 Vari*Lite luminaires from Philips Vari-Lite, all provided by Atomic Lighting.
