UK - Following the launch earlier this year of its radio controlled LED lights, R.A.T. (Music Stands) is extending its suite of radio controlled accessories. Responding to customer demand, and after identifying further unmet needs in the market, the company has developed two new components to add to its RAT Radio System portfolio. These will debut at PLASA 2010.

The Radio Controlled Power Pack consists of a radio controlled socket and a rechargeable battery, enabling completely wireless control over any 24V appliance plugged into the socket. Other voltage outputs are available to order.

The Radio DMX Bridge Receiver eliminates the need for DMX cables when controlling any DMX enabled device. The transmitter and receiver form a wireless bridge between any wired DMX outlet and the DMX input to the device. The only requirement at the device is a mains socket or a battery to power

Germany - With the completion of Lawo's new production facilities, consoles from Innovason, the French manufacturer of digital live systems, will be assembled at the Lawo factory from July 2010. Relocating the final assembly of Eclipse consoles to Rastatt, Germany, is Innovason's response to the growing demand for its latest console, says the company.

According to Innovason's product manager and customer service director, Hervé de Caro, the move offers significant benefits to Innovason customers. "With the increased demand for Eclipse, we had reached the limits of our manufacturing capabilities at our own premises in Plougoumelen. The move to Rastatt will significantly increase both the speed and efficiency of the production process. We will also be able to take advantage of the fact that Lawo actually manufactures many of its own components, which are naturally of t

On The Fringe - The Edinburgh Fringe, the largest arts festival in the world, has begun its three-week run in Scotland's capital. More than 21,000 performers will take part in 2,453 shows at about 250 venues across the city and beyond. Organisers are hoping to build on the 'staycation' success of last year's box office record 1.8m tickets sold. It is the 64th time the city has hosted what Fringe chief executive Kath Mainland calls the "greatest show on earth".

Mainland said ticket sales were strong and she was looking forward to a "successful" festival. She added, "We live in uncertain times. I think the thing about the Fringe is that it is an entirely open access arts festival. We don't decide who should take part in it. We don't decide how big it should be. We don't decide what the make-up should be. It will be interesting to see how it responds

UK - After a year of substantial growth across European markets, TOA Europe has a host of innovative products to demonstrate at PLASA 2010, all of which are being seen at the show for the first time.

Sure to attract attention is the Type H line array loudspeaker, the most compact, aesthetically pleasing and affordable line array TOA has ever built, which barely a year after its release is already finding favour in large, reflective public spaces where intelligibility is difficult to achieve and hanging space is at a premium.

Also on display is TOA's modular audio-mixing system, the D-2000, which can be expanded up to a massive 128 input/output configuration. This makes it suitable for venues such as hotel conference suites, convention centres, sports halls and places of worship, where future expansion in the form of new rooms or extensions need not be at the expense of adding

USA - The largest Optocore single ring network ever installed is currently in use in the Cirque du Soleil's Viva ELVIS production at the Aria Resort & Casino in Las Vegas.

Optocore's president, Marc Brunke, and North American director, Bill Coons, originally demonstrated the Optocore system to Cirque du Soleil sound designer Jonathan Deans and Matthew Ezold, Auerbach Pollock Friedlander's audio video systems consultant for Viva ELVIS. Based on feedback given during the demonstration, Optocore accelerated development of a server-based topology allowing simultaneous control from multiple client operators. As a result, "Optocore's flexibility and control options allowed us to consolidate multiple primary and backup switching matrices into a single routing engine," said Ezold

"We're the first to use client-servers," says the show's assistant head

UK - Network Rail, which runs, develops and maintains rail tracks, signaling and other infrastructure such as tunnels and bridges - together with18 of the country's biggest and busiest stations - has chosen fire telephones and induction loop systems produced by Current Thinking for inclusion in its St Pancras Thameslink Box project.

Many rail stations on the East Coast Main line are already equipped with fire telephones and induction loop systems produced at Current Thinking's Sunderland factory and managing director Tony Smith says Network Rail's (PADS) endorsement follows installation of its products at St Pancras International, as well as Stratford, Ebsfleet and Ashford International stations.

He explains, "We're delighted to have received this recognition from such an important organisation as Network Rail. In fact our equipment is already in use in many different sit

UK - If you are an acoustic consultant, facilities manager, architect or anyone involved in the manufacture, specification or installation of voice alarm systems, you will have heard of EN54 part 16, the new European standard covering voice alarm systems, including control and indicating equipment (VACIE), along with amplifiers, processors and similar hardware, and EN54 Part 24, which covers loudspeakers.

Its introduction is causing headaches - and considerable expense - for the UK and European manufacturing sector. The UK is one of only three of the EU's 27 member states where EN54 is yet to become law, but that will change in April 2011.

The complexity of the EN54 regulations, and the demands it places on manufacturers for testing, are onerous, especially in systems incorporating equipment from different manufacturers.

Norway - First opened in 1878, the Byscenen in Trondheim is as much a part of the cultural landscape of Norway as the fjords are of its coastline. The latest round of refurbishments saw the standing room capacity of the theatre actually reduced from 1,500 to 600.

The sound reinforcement system newly installed by avon a|s: is based around a XLD compact line-array system from Electro-Voice. It features six EV XLD281, 10 EV XLD291 and four EV XCS312 (subs) as well as four Xsubs, driven by 10 EV TG7 amplifiers and controlled using IRISNet software.

"I love the versatility of the XLD," comments Thomas Denstad, Byscenen's technical director. "We have, for example, two flown subs per side. This means that for shows that do not require an immense amount of low-end pressure, I can dispense altogether with the Xsubs. Here, we present virtually all musical genres, from the

UK - Stage Electrics were contracted by Bristol based Conference Connections to assist with a launch event for the 2012 Olympics and Paralympics, which took place in the city.

Stage Electrics video department supplied and installed a 6.9m x 4m (63 Panels) indoor LED video screen. During the event the video screen was used to display a variety of presentations and videos.

Normally LED video screens are vertically flown from trussing or ground stacked. However, this event required the screen to be horizontally displayed, thus showing the video content lying flat projecting towards the different atrium levels.

Assembled carefully in the middle of the ground floor atrium of the building, on specially designed legs, the video screen could be viewed from every angle when looking over the circular first floor balcony. In total 80 legs were attached to the modular screen and levelle

"We purchased the Cryo-Fogs to replace our previous machines, which were becoming expensive to maintain and keep in peak operating condition," says ENB's Dave Richardson. "We had seen Look's machines on the White Light stand at PLASA last year, were impressed with their performance and with the price; we've now switched over to using them entirely."

Cryo-Fog consists of a fog generator, a fan and a cooling chamber plus space for a five litre fluid container all built into a single, compact flightcase. Cryo-Fog uses liquid CO2 to cool the incoming smoke from the machine, ensuring that no smoke is emit

Italy/Sweden - Mid-July saw health & lifestyle products company Herbalife hold four-day Extravaganzas in Italy and Sweden, with up to 13,000 delegates at each. Featuring high production values, Yamaha digital mixing consoles controlled the audio.

Staged as part of the company's lavish 30th anniversary world tour, the events took place in Turin's Palaisozaki Arena and the Stockholm Globe Arena. Each was a mixture of conference, training sessions, team meetings, awards presentations, live entertainment and high profile 'geeing-up' for the delegates, a highlight being the company's own version of Pop Idol. As such, both events required audio rigs which could deliver both clear speech and high quality music to every seat in the house, all at impressive volume levels.

Sussex-based Dimension Audio provided the audio rigs for both shows, with Yamaha digital audio consoles a ce
