UK - Several generations of Soundcraft digital and analogue desks featured at Glastonbury this year - spanning a range of locations from the main Pyramid Stage to the Left Field tent, where SSE Audio and SKL respectively fielded their fleet of Soundcraft Vi6 digital consoles.

On the main stage, Russ Tite mixed The Kooks set on one of SSE Audio's four flagship Vi6 digital consoles, while another of their boards was on monitor duty with Kasabian's sound engineer, Mark 'Yogi' Novissimo.

SSE Audio's Pete Russell comments, "Sound engineers like Russ Tite really like the sound of the desk," he says. "One of the real plus points is that it has its own plug-in FX card with its own Lexicon DSP, so you can't run out of processing power. This is not the case with other digital desks, which can run out of DSP if you have lots of idle plug-ins."

USA - The green movement is in full swing at American DJ with the introduction of three new 4.9mW DMX-512 green lasers - the Emerald Sky, Emerald Scan II and Mini Emerald Beam.

"Green lasers are what everyone wants right now - their shorter wavelength makes them appear much brighter than red laser beams and they travel farther," said Scott Davies, general manager of the American DJ Group of Companies. "But unfortunately green lasers are also harder to make than red lasers and require a special diode, which has often put them out of reach price-wise for DJs and smaller clubs.

"American DJ has been constantly working to bring down the cost of green lasers," added Davies. "These new additions to our Emerald series make it more affordable than ever to put on a dazzling green laser show."

Emerald Sky is a twin green laser effect with dual 4.9mW

Norway - Following major technical refurbishments, Det Norske Teatret (The Norwegian Theatre) in Oslo has specified ETC's most technically advanced theatre lighting console, Eos, along with ETC Sensor and Sine Wave dimming and an ETC Unison architectural control system.

Built in 1985, the theatre is the largest performing arts venue in Norway, with three multidisciplinary spaces offering a diverse programme of both in-house and outside productions. Increases in the technical complexity of shows and the changing nature of lighting design have demanded that the theatre replace its entire entertainment, house and work lighting systems with a more flexible network.

UK - A new technical writing service for the professional audio, AV and related industries has been launched by two well known industry figures, Craig Lovell and Mick Boggis.

Based in Milton Keynes, IMS Technical Publications is able to offer a range of document services from simple text generation to full layout, graphic design and publication to print and electronic media. IMS Technical Publications claim that their many years of industry experience allow them to "provide a user's viewpoint of a product, something that many manufacturers have a problem with, especially after a long R&D phase".

According to Lovell and Boggis, the motivation for the new venture comes from what they see as a need to provide manufacturers with an alternative and more effective solution to generating technical documentation. "A manufacturer will frequently spend much time and effor

UK - Academy Music Group's long-term A/V system suppliers, Marquee Audio, has taken an inventive approach to the installation at its latest Carling Academy venue in Oxford, scheduled to open in September.

Formerly The Zodiac on Cowley Road, AMG is investing £2m into the refurbishment programme and increasing the overall building capacity to 1,350, creating three, production-complete performance spaces.

Marquee Audio carried out a site survey and identified where they could overhaul and upgrade some of the existing equipment, re-cabling each room to allow them to be used as part of a site-wide network, for which they are designing an advanced control system.

Marquee Audio's project manager Scott Wakelin said that this installation was not only about what the integrators were able to achieve, but also the forward-thinking approach of Academy Music Group.

Denmark - The LC Series from Martin Professional is a semi-transparent, modular system of lightweight LED panels (40 mm pixel pitch), designed for displaying film, digital images and graphics.

As the LC units are semi-transparent, they can be used in an array of applications and allow the seamless integration of moving images, lighting and set design, says the company. The panels can move through a range of intensity, from a solid wall of images and colour to near-invisibility and allow light, air, and effects to pass through.

The variety and depth of achievable colours in the LC series, combined with a brilliant output, allows the accurate broadcast of digital media, which remains true to the source formatting and the colour and intensity of other lights in the design.

Although useful in a wide variety of applications, the LC series is specially prepared for video and TV ap

UK - As related in a new 15-minute film created by Rob Reiner, director of 1984's This is Spinal Tap, members of the band were located and brought back together for Live Earth at Wembley with the help of documentarian Marty DiBergi (a role played by Reiner in the original movie, as well as in this year's film).

Performing at Live Earth, the original members of Spinal Tap - singer David St. Hubbins (Michael McKean), lead guitarist Nigel Tufnel (Christopher Guest) and bassist Derek Smalls (Harry Shearer) - scorched the stage, startled the horses clear across town in Buckingham Palace's Royal Mews, and shattered eardrums with a set list including the incendiary hit Big Bottom, cult favourite Stonehenge, and a new single written especially for the occasion, Warmer Than Hell. As longstanding Shure endorsers, Tap relied upon a bevy of the company's products

China - Live Earth in Shanghai saw Star Events Group China supply its first full outdoor stage system. The structure was built at the base of the iconic Oriental Pearl Group (OPG) tower, which at 468m is the highest tower in Asia. It is owned by Shanghai Media Group, who provided broadcast facilities and carried the show on their local channels.

Around 3000 attended the event, with estimated television audiences of 800 million in China and two billion worldwide. Promoter for the event was Live Nation in partnership with OPG.

A 15m Orbit Flexidome was chosen as the appropriate stage system, as the site has a shopping mall beneath and no other structure could provide the rigging capacity combined with low self weight and point loads. Working on the roof of the shopping mall also meant the use of any cranes, pickers or forklifts was not allowed, so the whole system had to be hand

Italy - Two complete XL8 live performance systems have joined forces on front of house and monitors for a new, large-scale Italian musical production.

Actor Dei is based on the history of Saint Pio from Pietrelcina, an Italian priest who became famous for his piety as well as alleged supernatural events including the appearance of stigmata. The systems have been provided by Italy's leading PA rental company Agora which purchased them from local Midas distributor Texim.

Long-time Midas aficionado Claudio Venturelli is sound designer and chief sound engineer for the show. "As soon as I was told about the availability of two complete systems from Agora, I immediately migrated to the new Midas platform," he explains. "There was only one reason for my choice: I had absolute confidence in its sound quality, and the XL8 didn't disappoint me.
