Following a long battle with cancer, Antony Bridges passed away at Trinity Hospice in Clapham on Tuesday 20 December 2005.

Born and bred in Ipswich, Antony moved to London in 1982 to study Physics at Imperial College in South Kensington. He rapidly immersed himself in the Drama Society there and within a year was one of the main "techies". His involvement with Dramsoc resulted in an 'unplanned' gap year during his course which he spent working for Theatre Projects Lighting, then at Blundell Street. He ultimately returned to Imperial to finish off his degree before re-joining TP for a further 18 months.

From there he joined Strand Lighting's service department in 1990, spending the next five years travelling the world, commissioning new installations or servicing existing installations of Galaxy, Gemini, EC90 and LP90. His expertise in LP90s resulted in a two-year stint at S

Chauvet had the Intimidator 2.0 five-channel intelligent scanner, the Insignia 2.0 five-channel intelligent barrel scanner, and the Intimidator 1.0 four-channel DMX intelligent scanner, plus the DMx-55, DMX-44, and DMX-7 universal DMX-512 controllers.

Applied Electronics showed Australian manufacturer LSC Lighting's maXim series of lighting control consoles. Features include 32-bit processing power, resistive touch-screen editing, system "brown-out" protection, universal power supply, onboard self-diagnostics, pop-up status windows on the video display, and full text-labelling. Also shown was the I-Beam truss, round-tube aluminum truss with an internal I-beam inside the tubing to increase structural strength, the 6 x 1200W Dimmer Bar, and the Pelican case, for easy transport on wheels.

Link showed the latest enhancements to its eurocable ETN line of Cat 5e cables, especially designed for the live entertainment industry. According to managing director Craig Beyrooti, they were developed in response to requests for DMX and Ethernet transmission solutions.

Scharff Weisberg showed G-LEC's LightFrame, another version of its LED frame products. This one is lighter and less expensive, making it available to designers of smaller events who are looking for a unique lighting/graphic effect.

Avolites showed a number of product developments for the first time in the US. These included its mDMX mains/DMX distribution system, and the P2P, a point-to-point narrow band transmission device for streaming DMX over long distances. Both systems integrate with eDMX, Avo's wireless DMX system, all of which together offer a complete toolkit for getting DMX from A to B and beyond.

Seen previously at PLASA, the ArtDC dimmer is a clever stand-alone unit which works from a DC battery supply. Wireless and eDMX enabled, it offers an ideal solution for dimming in remote, inaccessible places. Incidentally, Avo's Rik Salzedo reports good growth in dimming markets in the UK: ART2000 dimming is enjoying success in the film world, having been used on the Harry Potter films, as well as Tomb Raider, Bridget Jones, Die Another Day, The Italian Job and Charlie and the Ch

Hong Kong - Back in March 2004, L&SI reported on the completion of the first phase of Hong Kong Harbour's ambitious sound and light show plans. At that time, the Symphony of Lights spectacle included 18 high profile buildings around Victoria Harbour. Now, the project has grown into the Circle of Light - and has been confirmed by the Guinness Book of Records as the world's largest permanent light and sound show.

The final show has taken over three years to complete. Since 23 December 2005, 31 buildings located on either side of Victoria Harbour, have blossomed nightly into a dazzling display of visual firepower. The 11-minute show of 2004 has now become a 17-minute performance, with a kaleidoscope of effects including almost 15,000 dynamic lighting fixtures, Stella Ray YAGS producing thousands of high powered laser beams, world class pyrotechnics and a sound

AVR showed the full Ledion range of LED units, including Ledion Ultra LU1, a single-color LED fixture; the Ultra LU3 and Ultra LU6, both universal MR16 fittings; the Ultra LU12, a multi-purpose up- or downlight fitting; and the Ultra LU5 range of optical and non-optical linear strips, available in 400, 800, and 1,200mm lengths.

The news from JBL was that that the company now offers networked versions of its VerTec DP Series. These integrated audio systems, compatible with the HiQnet System Architect Software, feature JBL DrivePack technology with extensive remote control and monitoring capabilities.

UK - The acclaimed live venue and club, the Leadmill in Sheffield, celebrated its silver anniversary in 2005. The former flour mill has seen many transformations over the last quarter-century. A huge number of bands has passed through its doors, many of whom have gone on to become household names, and the club regularly plays host to some of the UK's hottest DJs. Some of the more recent transformations include a complete sound system upgrade in the Leadmill's multi-purpose Steel Stage room, which now boasts the UK's first AX loudspeaker system from EAW. The system was supplied by Stage Electrics and installed by Tega, a systems contractor based in Hull.

As the room is used for both live bands and club nights, the brief was for a versatile and compact system that was capable of handling a wide variety of music. It also had to offer very precise pattern control, as the previous sy

TMB showed several new products; one was the Enlux LED Floodlight, an Edison screw-based LED fixture that produces an 80° field, consumes 22W of power, has a 50,000 hour life and is available in 24 different colours. A Kupo DMX512 tester, shown at PLASA, was adopted by TMB in time for LDI as the ProTester. This small, brushed-aluminum diagnostic tool, with built-in LED flashlight, is a neat little unit with enough features to make it a worthwhile addition to most tool boxes.

TMB also showed three impressive and increasingly successful UK-made systems: the Hippotizer media server from Green Hippo; the excellent K2 motion control system from Kinesys, which was demonstrated by a moving truss arrangement above TMB's ever-busy seating area (see Clouseau, pages 52-53, for more of the K2); and the award-winning Pharos LPC. Pharos was also promoting its moving light data service to lighting c

New from L-Acoustics were two self-powered two-way coaxial loudspeakers, the 108P and 112P, both combining the advantages of the company's coaxial point-source technology with the convenience of self-powered performance and onboard digital signal processing.

UK - At this year's PLASA Show, lantern manufacturer Robert Juliat launched a number of new products and upgraded a number of established lines. All of these, including the Lutin and the Super Korrigan, are now on-demo at Juliat's UK distributor, White Light - and a number of the products have already been snapped up by end users.

Leading the new products at PLASA was the Lutin - a 1kW tungsten washlight which, through interchangeable lenses, can be a fresnel, a plano-convex or a pebble-convex unit to provide the precise beam edge quality to suit any wash application. Ideally suited to rep theatres or rental companies, Lutin offers the maximum possible versatility from a much smaller investment than would be required to purchase separate lanterns of each type; the specially developed cable connection concealed within Lutin's rear handle also ensures that the luminaire is easy to

UK - XL Video was poised to supply the NEC's largest ever sit-down meal event ('Thomson's Festive Fiesta' for 5, 800 people) with full video, audio and lighting production and technical services on 14 December - when the Buncefield fuel storage depot in Hemel Hempstead exploded at 6:03a.m. on Sunday 11 December. Injuring 43 people but miraculously with no loss of life, this triggered the UK's largest peacetime inferno, which raged for three days.

XL's warehouse, located just 600m from the epicentre of the explosion, was damaged in the blast, and the entire area was sealed off, including the truck-full of gear destined for the Thomson event. This was due to depart XL that day for a 6 a.m. Monday get-in at the NEC - ready for a 10 a.m. show start on Wednesday. XL project manager Phil Goddard, who lives 22 miles away, was awoken by the blast. Shortly after, he received a call from

Australia - Hoyts Cinemas has recently opened two new, world-class cinema complexes - one at Melbourne Central and the other at Sydney's Blacktown - which intend to demonstrate to the rest of the market just how it is done. Both cinemas are being promoted as 'Australia's premier entertainment destination.' A big statement, but one that Hoyts has every intention of proving accurate.

Hoyts wanted their foyer areas to be unique, colourful and most of all dynamic. They turned to Michael Trudgeon and David Poulton of Crowd Productions, the chief architects of Hoyts' public spaces, to design an environment that reflected the ever-changing nature of the cinema world. Their idea was to install colour-changing panels and lighting right through out the foyer and surrounding entrance areas.

Trudgeon and Poulton approached Lightmoves to transform this complex idea into reality. Lightmoves

USA - Chandler, a US-based innovator in LED technology, has announced its new patented R30 LED theatrical coloured floodlight series, which the company says provides the equivalent of 200W of light output while using just 22W. This is due to the enLux patented LED light engine, says the company.

Chandler claims that its strong light output and low heat and energy use make the new enLux floodlights ideal for applications including theatres, nightclubs, casinos and restaurants. Remote locations where power is limited, such as in tents, will greatly benefit, and can use more of the enLux units than would be possible with traditional floodlights. There are 23 theatrical-designed colours, as well as a UV LED black light.

The R30 can be used in Par-style medium screw based fixtures, R40 Striplights, as well as architectural downlights and track fixtures. Models are available for use

Japan - Osaka's Theatre Brava! opened its doors in March 2005 and has hardly seen a dark night since. The former Osaka MBS Theatre has undergone a substantial renovation, including new décor, revamped lighting, and a new state-of-the-art sound system featuring Meyer Sound self-powered loudspeakers.

The diversity of presentations was a prime consideration in the theatre's redesign and renovation. The stage was designed as a flexible, movable structure that is capable of adjusting to various models, depending on the production needs. The theatre seats just over 1,100, with slightly more than 700 seated on the orchestra level and an additional 400 in the balcony.

Osaka-based Native Audio Company provided the audio system, which is based around eight M1D ultra-compact curvilinear array loudspeakers suspended at the centre of the proscenium and two CQ-2 narrow coverage main

USA - Production Resource Group (PRG) announced today that it is providing a full lighting package, controlled by its Virtuoso console and powered by the PRG Series 400 system, for the Sprint Super Bowl XL Halftime Show, to be held next month at Detroit's Ford Field.

The Rolling Stones, currently on tour around the world with lighting supplied by PRG, will headline the halftime extravaganza. Produced by Don Mischer Productions, with lighting designed by Bob Dickinson and Patrick Woodroffe, Super Bowl XL will be televised live on 5 February, on ABC to over 100 million viewers.
