Peavey focused attention on a new live sound desk made in Australia - the Smart Console. Really, it's a work surface designed to be used with products such as Peavey's Nion (now we see their logic). The control surface comes in three formats - 48-, 72- and 96-channel, each topped by a sweeping arc bridge which exemplifies the innovative approach taken by the Smart Console. Besides being a meter bridge, the arc gives the operator instant access to any channel by sweeping a finger along the touch-sensitive strip below the channel linear meters. A simple scribble strip beneath each channel is read by character recognition software from below and transferred onto the digital display above the channel faders on the main work surface below.

Highly intuitive, but radically unconventional, the Smart Console is intended as a universal control surface to work with ultimately any engine. Besides

Adding to its existing Mood Light product line, Traxon launched the 64PXL DMX at PLASA.The 64-pixel / LED light source tile measures 500 x 500 x 60 mm, and each pixel can be controlled via DMX512.

UK - It goes without saying that behind every reliable and efficient contractor there is an equally reliable and efficient supplier. Rope Assemblies equips a diverse selection of markets with an ever-expanding catalogue of wire ropes, rigging, PPE (personal protective equipment) and safety products and, to remain competitive, constantly expands its stock in line with customer demand.

With UK distributors including White Light, Stage Electrics and TMB, plus European distributors in Italy, Austria, Sweden, Denmark, Holland, Portugal and Iceland (all of which deals were agreed at PLASA shows over the last few years), it's amazing to think that the theatre and entertainment industry still only accounts for 50% of Rope Assemblies' business.

MD Siobhan Hitchen prides herself on the family-owned business that considers its customer's and its staff needs and safety as paramount. The company

Sharing a stand with MA Lighting, Rainbow Colour Changers announced a new "advanced electronics system" retrofitable to the classic line of colour scrollers. The new electronics system adds a number of new features including a 'special colour mode' to avoid burning through low transmission colours, lower voltage tolerance, over-voltage protection and the adjustment of control parameters.

Probably one of the most useful products at the show is the new Samson USB microphone, the C01U. The condenser mic plus directly into a USB port on either a PC or Mac allowing direct digital recording into the machine. The A/D converters are placed as close to the capsule as physically possible and were designed specifically for the microphone.

As we reported last issue, Australia's State Automation (formerly Bytecraft) has launched a joint venture with Robert Juliat, forming Paris-based State Automation Europe. Pride of place on the stand was the state-of-the-art SANET fibre optic lighting control network. The modular system comprises a range of components, including a 90-channel sine wave dimming module, offline editor software, tablet PC, mobile phone monitoring interface and many more. Based on TCP/IP technology, the system can transmit up to 32,768 DMX channels. International sales manager Bertrand Dauphant reported much interest from visitors.

Most production professionals, musicians and DJs need at least one travel-worthy case for their equipment. Buster Cases takes this to the next level by offering a completely bespoke service, designing and building cases to your precise requirements. New for PLASA were self-contained gig boxes and DJ consoles which can be adapted to any requirement, while a wide selection of other sample cases were on show. Having built cases for clients including Oasis, Jamiroquai, Allen & Heath and Roland UK, the company was fielding a range of enquiries.

UK - This autumn, the Children's Theatre Company opens its Cargill Stage to the theatre going public. The new stage provides an additional performance space for the Minneapolis theatre company with flexible seating for up to 300. Patrons will enjoy state of the art productions, thanks in part to Tomcat equipment.

When designing the new facility, Children's Theatre Company wanted the lighting options to be as flexible as the seating. Working with the Tomcat design team, they could accomplish just that. The order included 65 pieces of medium duty truss (45 x 15ft sections, 12 x 5ft sections and 8 x 4ft sections) with asexual spigots. These truss sections can be configured in a number of ways; however, additional flexibility is provided by the corner blocks, designed with custom-made, spigoted truss attachment brackets (TABs). In addition to the truss, the order included 36 Columbus

Utilizing Alcons' own 18" ribbon tweeter, the new Q-Series is a true flat line array in the purest sense of the name. Highly directive Q comes in 1m modules with frequency control in the lower ranges increasing as you add modules, potentially down to 80Hz if you like a line that tall. With 90° horizontal dispersion and the high claimed power of the ribbon driver, a single module makes for a very powerful cabinet.Alcons' Ultra Compact Line Array comprises two cabinets, the LR14 and LR14B (bass). It can be flown (including the sub), or groundstacked, and uniquely with the mid/high boxes pole-mounted (up to three boxes) in a yoke-style harness, adjustments can still be made to the arraying intervals between the cabinets. All with on-board amps and DSP.

The Apollo Design stand featured a vast selection of gobos that included some of the 60-100 new gobos that the Indiana-based company introduces each year. In addition to gobos, Apollo also showed off its Smart Color scrollers and its Smart Move gobo rotators.

K2 from Kinesys is an entirely new piece of software from this innovative motion control specialist. In essence, K2 looks at moving objects as a whole, rather than as an abstract lifted and moved by multiple hoists - making the whole movement programming process much simpler. Create an object on screen, drag it to the desired new/next position (a process that can be viewed and worked in 2D or 3D) and then the software will calculate the movements needed by each of the lifting devices. Once a sequence has been completed the programmer can run it on screen and if it looks as desired, the data will then transfer to run actual hoists.

An added bonus of this software is its flexibility: if, for example, a designer adds extra equipment to an object - such as more lights to a truss structure - which may require the addition of an extra hoist to cope with the increased weight, the programmer d

Surely one of the most eye-catching stands at th show was that of Pulsar, with its LED-adorned canopy. The company showed several new models, including ChromaBatten100 (available in 600 and 1200mm widths) and the compact ChromaFlood100. All units are IP65-rated and are powered directly from 100-240V. They have full remote DMX control of RGB levels for colour mixing, and internal sequences provide operation without a separate control system.

Another addition to the ChromaBatten range is the ChromaBatten50 - a 300mm wide, IP65-rated fixture, powered and controlled from the ChromaZone. Also new is the ChromaStripX3 high power LED strip, offering three times the power of the existing ChromaStrip2. Finished in sleek extruded aluminium and available in 300, 600 and 900mm lengths, the ChromaStripX3 is IP65-rated and are powered for the established ChromaZone technology.Pulsar also updated its

LTM - Lift Turn Move started as it meant to go on by serving champagne and cake within half an hour of PLASA 2005 opening! Celebrating both the company's first birthday and the 50th birthday of the infamous Columbus McKinnon Lodestar hoist, LTM's John Jones gave out colour reproductions of the original Lodestar brochure. Suggestions that LTM should offer Lodestars at the original price at PLASA 2005 fell on deaf, if amused, ears. Commenting on their first year of trading, Jones said: "I wish I'd done it years ago."

The Mach CW 115 is the newest subwoofer in Mach's new C-Range of installation speakers. The powerful reflex-loaded sub is designed for heavy-duty use in professional environments, say Mach. Like all speakers in the Mach C-Range, the CW 115 is designed to fit unobtrusively into any install environment and features the same flying point principles used on the C-Range top boxes. The Mach C-Range also includes the CI Series of molded speakers for in-fill applications, and the first in a series of white CI Series moulded speakers, the CI 6, also featured at PLASA.

The Rigging Partnership gave a show debut to its Flywire 3D automated flying system, which is designed to fly products, objects, cameras and performers within a three-dimensional flying envelope.
