UK - Sunday 11 September sees the opening day of this year's PLASA Show and Pioneer will be kicking things into place with some spectacular DJ sets - from James Zabiela, Eddie Halliwell and Addictive TV.

This year's show is promising to be one of the greatest yet for Pioneer - products being showcased include the Professional DJ Booth range of stunning DVJ-X1s, the new EFX-1000 and DJM-1000 digital mixer. Other products available for you to try include the new CDJ-200 single CD deck. Old favourites will also be making an appearance.

Pioneer will also be unveiling its latest products so visit the stand to find more. From Monday 12 September, other great DJs playing on the Pioneer stand will include Eclectic Method, Phil K and Dan Tait.

UK - One of the keynote sessions at this year's PLASA Show (11-14 September, Earls Court 1, London) will be an audience with American lighting veteran Sonny Sonnenfeld (Tuesday 13 September, 4.30pm). Sonnenfeld has been involved in theatre and architectural lighting for over 60 years: his career started at Century Lighting (now Strand) in 1945, where he became New York sales manager. In 1961, he co-founded Lighting & Electronics, rejoining what had then become Strand Century between 1975-85. In the intervening years, he's also been a sales representative for Colortran, Wybron and ETC.

During his professional career, he has taught lighting, won several awards, written numerous articles and founded the Broadway Lighting Master Classes, making a major contribution to the professional development of many of today's leading architectural and theatre lighting designers. USA - The Crazy Horse Memorial, Black Hills, SD is a very high profile installation. At 563 feet high and 641ft long it's also not just a profile, but a massive three-dimensional sculpture. Chief Crazy Horse, and the mount he rode in on, is being carved and blasted out of mountainside in Rapid City, South Dakota. The project has been a work-in-progress for 57 years - and completion is not in sight.

The memorial to Crazy Horse was the life long work of sculptor Korczak Ziolkowski (1908-1982) who came to the Black Hills at the invitation of Chief Henry Standing Bear of the Oglala Lakota tribe: "My fellow chiefs and I would like the white man to know the red man has great heroes too," said the Chief's invitation. UK - ETC officially launches its powerful Congo lighting-control console at PLASA 2005. Sneak-previewed at last year's PLASA and now shipping worldwide, Congo offers seamless integration of conventional and moving light control, say the company. The first system to combine ETC and Avab expertise and engineering, Congo earned its stripes at the Eurovision Song Contest 2005, where four final beta test boards controlled hundreds of automated and conventional luminaires, 16 media servers, 15,000 channels of lighting effects and 37 universes of DMX. Since then it has found favour throughout Europe, being ordered by and installed in theatres, TV studios and multi-purpose venues alike.

Also new is ETC's IES Matrix Mk II sine wave dimming system, bringing higher density, improved efficiency and an extended choice of channel ratings to the highly successful and reliable Matrix standard.

Switzerland - The Hallenstadion in Zurich reopened on 31 July, with a new sound system from Bose, which the company says is "defining a new benchmark for sound in modern multipurpose arenas". Project 'Hallenstadion 2000 plus', which undertook the complete renovation of the historic multi-purpose arena, was first introduced to the public in 1999. The objective of the extensive redevelopment was the reconstruction of the Hallenstadion to create a new kind of event arena for 13,000 visitors, which would offer even better multifunctional purposes, optimum security, modern conveniences, and excellent acoustics.

The Netherlands - The 2005 Red Bull Air Race World Series is the latest version of the spectacular "slalom-in-the-sky" event that debuted in 2003. The Air Race was conceived in 2001 with the idea of creating a competitive air event involving not only speed, but also aerobatics. To develop the idea, Red Bull tapped Hungary's two-time World Aerobatic champion Peter Besenyei. The Air Race premiered at Red Bull's Air Power 2003 event in Zeltweg, Austria, successfully enough to engender a second 2003 race in Budapest and three more races in 2004.

An upgraded version of its Accu Spot 250 automated moving head, the Accu Spot 250 II has a number of new features that make controlling a light show easier, including Remote DMX Addressing (RDMX), say the company. The new RDMX feature gives users the ability to change the Accu Spot 250 II's DMX values remotely, from any DMX console.

Other features include an improved 4-button menu system that makes accessing and navigating the menu an easier and clearer process. A new glass gobo has also been added to the unit, so that it now comes equipped with two glass gobos instead of one (out of a total of seven gobos plus spot). USA - The government of San Luis Obispo County, California recently moved into its new administration building. The move was the culmination of more than five years of designing and building a facility tailored to its specific and varying needs.

The slow pace of design and construction was a reflection of the desire to get everything correct. This was particularly evident in the increasingly vital area of audio/visual and information technology, according to Joey D'Angelo, principal consultant with Charles M. Salter Associates, Inc., the San Francisco-based consulting firm who designed the facility's A/V system.

For the sound system, Shish has once again called in the services of installation specialists, the Sound Division Group. USA - Northern Sound & Light (NSL) recently received the Outstanding Sales Performance Award for 2004-2005 from dbx/Lexicon Professional Products. The company was chosen from many competitors in the Eastern region of the United States

UK - Event branding specialist Sunbaba will unveil its new 'Digital Austronet' air permeable fabric, at the Showman's Show this year. Sunbaba has been the sole UK supplier for Austronet fabrics since 1996, however the printing process has now been perfected to allow for digital printing, having been under development for the last two years in conjunction with the company's colleagues in Austria.

The new 'Digital Austronet' has been developed for customers who want to create large format, full colour, digitally printed displays on air permeable fabric (suitable for outdoor environments). Being a polyethylene based material, the product offers a more eco-friendly alternative to the traditional PVC based products.
