Denmark - DPA Microphones continued its sponsorship of the annual Copenhagen Jazz Festival this summer, working as acoustic consultants and providing technical support throughout the festival, particularly at multipurpose venues not primarily designed for music. DPA also provided a large quantity of microphones including IMK 4061 instrument miking kits, 3521 compact stereo kits, 4066 omnidirectional headband mics, 4011 cardioids, 4022 and 4023 compact cardioids, 4006 omnidirectionals and a selection of mounting accessories.

France - MPM Light and Sound based in Woippy, France, has tripled their inventory of Adamson Y18's, to bring the count to 72 cabinets in total. The French company's founder, Marc Morosini, commented, "We have 1200 shows to provide PA's over the coming year so this purchase has been in the pipeline for some time. We couldn't be happier, DV2 and Adamson have shown us incredible support since our first Yaxis purchase in 2001. The product has served us very well.

USA - For the sold-out Diverse City Worldwide Tour - featuring the multi-award winning combination of Audio Adrenaline and tobyMac - lighting designers Jeff Lava and Matt Waldner had to develop a unified lighting design that would be effective for both performances. Utilizing a complete lighting package from Bandit Lites, the two worked together to bring this inspirational tour to life.

"Matt and I had to put our heads together and come up with a design that would work for the both of us," said Audio Adrenaline LD Jeff Lava. "We had to pack everything in one truck, so we were very limited, but the fun part of it is we had to think outside the box."

UK - EuroJam was the biggest Scouting and Guiding event held in Europe for ten years. Held on the V Festival site at Hylands Park near Chelmsford in Essex, EuroJam welcomed over 12,000 people on site every day for 12 days from 29 July to 10 August. Participants came from 67 countries including 40 European nations, but also from as far away as Mexico and Australia.

PA rental specialists, Concert Sound furnished a significant EAW KF760 line array system for the main stage and a number of smaller systems for the other stages plus three engineers for the duration of the event. At the same time, on the other side of the Atlantic, rental company RCS Corporation of Cleveland, Ohio, supplied a massive KF760 system for the US National Scout jamboree at Fort AP Hill in Virginia, which welcomed over 30,000 scouts from all over the US and beyond.

USA - Coldplay's video Speed of Sound is up for four of MTV's Video Music Awards this year, including Video of the Year, Best Cinematography, Best Editing, and Best Special Effects - for which production designer Michael Keeling of Project X is honoured. In an unprecedented application, nearly the entire video shoot was done with LED lights from a total of 700 Versa TUBEs, which Keeling commissioned from Element Labs.

The production team, including director Mark Romanek, producer Arif McGarry, and production companies Anonymous Content and A52, filmed the band on a massive sound stage in front of a half crescent back wall composed of 640 Versa TUBEs placed on approximately 6" centres. Since the TUBEs were used without diffusion sleeves and the surrounding structure is quite minimal, the lights appear to be suspended in midair.

UK / USA - Richmond Studios, the Richmond Upon Thames-based multimedia recording, design and authoring house, won two top honours at the prestigious DVD Association Awards ceremony, presented in New York recently, and saw its client, Cirque du Soleil, also pick up an award for a Richmond-authored DVD.

Richmond Studios was presented with the Video Encoding Quality Excellence Award - for The Charlatans' Live At Last DVD. This, the band's first ever DVD release, was recorded live at Brixton Academy. The DVD was designed and authored by Richmond Studios.

USA - US progressive house DJ D:Fuse recently recorded a live set for his new double-disc album 'People_3' using Allen & Heath mixers. Recorded at the renowned San Francisco club, Mighty, D:Fuse performed with a full electronic percussion set-up accompanied by instrumentalist/DJ/producer Mike Hiratzka and MC Flint, using Allen & Heath's Xone:62 professional DJ mixer, a pair of Xone VF-1 analogue filter units, and a 24-channel GL2400 mixer.

"The show and the recording went flawlessly," reports D:Fuse from his project studio in Austin, Texas where he is recording and mixing the chill disc that will accompany the live performance set on the two-CD album. The album is due for released in September on Moist Music, through Sony's RED distribution wing.

UK - Sound Division has installed a compact background music system into the newly opened Quadruples café bar and eatery in Finchley, North London. According to Sound Division's David Graham, the brief was straightforward. "The client was looking for a high quality background music system but he was working within a very tight budget. Nevertheless he definitely wanted something professional rather than an off-the-shelf consumer system from a high street retailer.

"He doesn't have a large area to cover, so we supplied a system comprising a total of six JBL Control 23 compact loudspeakers, a Pioneer PD-M603 6-disc multi-play CD player and a Harman Kardon HK3480 amplifier with an integral FM."

UK - UK installer, Clarity in Sound Light & Vision, recently carried out a major upgrade to the main hall sound system at St Michael's Catholic Grammar School in Finchley, North London, selecting Allen & Heath's iDR-4 DSP mixer at the heart of the new system. The Hall is used for various events in the School's calendar including theatrical productions, music concerts, assemblies, and church services, so the sound system needed to be adaptable.

UK - Mojo Barriers will launch its Mojo BLMS (Barrier Load Monitor System) at PLASA 2005. The BLMS is a new system designed to measure the pressure applied to a section of barrier by a crowd at an event and represents a significant step forwards in health and safety of crowds attending live events, claims Mojo.

The system has been in field trails for over a year and has been identified as a useful tool to predict and control audience situations before they get to a dangerous state. It comprises an innovative system of pressure sensors, built in to the load bearing arms of the barriers, linked via ethernet to an Apple computer. The whole system is totally unobtrusive to personnel working in the pit and has been carefully designed to be practical in a concert or festival environment, adds Mojo.

Based in Oxnard, Ortiz is now assisting Freudenberg with all aspects of L-Acoustics' domestic sales and marketing efforts. Among her current responsibilities are the execution of marketing initiatives, planning trade show activities and events, maintaining the company's inventory and sales databases, handling literature requests, arranging travel, aiding the accounting department, and other related duties.

UK - Pearce Hire provided the lighting and power for five open-air forest sites this summer, for concerts by Ian Brown, The Beautiful South, Madness, Daniel Bedingfield and Jools Holland. The Forestry Commission organised Forest Tour has been growing in popularity over the last four years while still maintaining its relaxed atmosphere. Pearce Hire provided the site power and lighting for High Lodge, Thetford Forest, Bedgebury Pinetum, Westonbirt Arboretum, Delamere Forest and Dalby Forest in the North Yorkshire Moors.

Each concert has a specially installed temporary infrastructure among the trees in the forest, and attracts crowds from 3,000 to 5,000 people. Pearce ran the stage power from a pair of synchronised 200kVA generators. Power distribution was installed to the dressing rooms, bar areas, catering and at Westonbirt, hospitality area.

UK - Two of London's longest established recording facilities - Phoenix and Gateway - have merged to create a new orchestral recording facility at Pinewood Studios. The facility will be known as Phoenix Two, representing both the re-emergence of Phoenix Sound from the ashes of the Wembley development and the alliance of the two studios. The Gateway studio at Kingston has now closed following the ending of the 20-year relationship with Kingston University.

The new studio will accommodate up to thirty musicians and aims to provide for the classical, jazz, commercial and contemporary music recording that Gateway and Phoenix have become recognised for. Tie lines to the enormous, and adjacent, F Stage at Pinewood will make full orchestral recording available in the future. A location recording facility will also soon be available. USA - Color Kinetics Inc has announced that the US District Court for the District of Massachusetts has granted all of its motions for summary judgment against Super Vision International Inc with respect to the validity and infringement of Color Kinetics' patents and inequitable conduct.

By granting summary judgment for Color Kinetics, the Court determined that there was no genuine dispute of material fact and that Color Kinetics was entitled to judgment as a matter of law against Super Vision on Super Vision's claims of invalidity of Color Kinetics' patents, and that the patents are infringed by Super Vision. The Court also found that Color Kinetics was not guilty of inequitable conduct regarding its actions with the US Patent and Trademark Office, as alleged by Super Vision. As such, no trial will be held on these issues.

UK - The sixth series of Big Brother, filmed at the specially constructed Big Brother House in Elstree Studios, London, came to a dramatic close recently. The show's creators, Endemol, built an outdoor eviction area, which was the site of the nail-biting live evictions on the final night which attracted nearly 8 million TV viewers.

Production manager Lynette Woods-Reynolds managed the area for the 11 weekly evictions, which was expanded for the finalé episode when the last four contestants were evicted in front of the live audience. Woods-Reynolds explained: "We brought in a brilliant team of suppliers, who worked really well together to create a live event that looked great on television, which was what most of the people around us were concerned with. USA - New Jersey based Circuit Lighting Inc has been busy supplying Robe moving lights to a series of high profile televised sporting events including a recent Showtime Boxing HBO pay-per-view broadcast from Washington DC.
