UK - The first ever Nordic Music Awards was held recently in Oslo, Norway and rental company Audio One was the chosen live audio supplier for the event. The show, which was held in Oslo Spektrum and broadcast live on Scandinavian television, featured top international artists such as Robbie Williams, Tina Turner, Kylie Minogue, Westlife and Brian McFadden.

The Nordic Music Awards is to be an annual event for Norway, Sweden and Denmark, where national and international artists are chosen in different categories, such as Best International Female Artist, Best Nordic Band, etc.

USA - Super Vision International Inc, the Florida-based manufacturer of fibre optic and LED lighting systems, has announced that Advanced Lighting Systems Inc of Sauk Centre, Minnesota, has signed a license to Super Vision's 'Variable Color Lighting System' 1990 patent developed in 1988 by Richard Belliveau of High End Systems. This follows the announcement in October that Canada-based Spectrum Manufacturing had signed a license to the '687' patent.

Super Vision purchased this patent from High End Systems to provide open access to the industry for intellectual property rights in the production and sale of colour-changing LED systems. Advanced Lighting specializes in the manufacture of fibre optic and LED lighting products for the architectural and entertainment industry.

UK - Automation and movement specialists Kinesys has designed and built an automation and control system for the new Clear Channel Entertainment production of Starlight Express.

This starts its UK tour at Manchester Opera House in November, following a lengthy and successful stint in the US. Kinesys initially supplied the production two years ago at the start of its US tour - providing six Elevation 1+ variable speed chain hoist controllers, an Array PD-ES power and Emergency Stop distribution unit plus a computer system, complete with proprietary Vector software. This was used to move the lighting trusses quickly and safely during the show, greatly enhancing the visual dynamics and flexibility of the touring rig.

USA - Entertainment lighting manufacturer High End Systems Inc has announced the immediate availability of three new versions of software-only Catalyst packages. The three versions are priced for any sized application or budget and enable customers to easily upgrade from one version of the product to the next.

Catalyst effectively combines lighting effects with digital media content to create virtual scenery. It allows lighting designers to integrate graphics and video and drive output devices such as High End Systems' Digital Light products (DL1 and DL2) as well as video screens and LED arrays. Previous to software-only versions, Catalyst was packaged with a complete media server system, which included an Apple G5 computer and related accessories.

UK - West Molesey based Sound Associates, the UK's largest supplier and installer of high quality cinema projection and sound systems, has just taken delivery of 16 D.A.S. DS-112A active loudspeakers and 16 Sennheiser evolution G2 300-IEM wireless monitor systems. The equipment make up the sound reinforcement system for eight portable cinema systems that Sound Associates is supplying to Film London, part of the Government-backed strategic agency, the UK Film Council. As part of the Digital Fund for Non Theatrical Exhibition, Film London required eight portable cinema systems that could be used in a wide range of multi-purpose venues including schools, colleges, and local halls.

Denmark - Bico Professionel A/S, the Danish dealer for Italian manufacturer LDR, has recently specified and installed a batch of Suono F250 MSD luminaries to illuminate the new Alfa Romeo showroom in Birkeroed close to Copenhagen, Demnark. A total of 19 of the units of the units, in silver, were used to light the interiors of the building and to highlight the new Alfa Romeo cars.

The fixtures were specified by Mogens Gewecke from Bico, who says: "I took the project through from start to finish, so we had to interact with all the involved contractors. The ability to interact with the internal fittings design and to project an even beam of light with low maintenance were all top priorities when it came to choosing the lights."

Belgium - Night of The Proms is a high profile music and entertainment spectacular, currently celebrating its 20th anniversary, with 18 sold-out nights in Belgium's largest arena, the 15,000 capacity Antwerp Sportpaleis, before touring to Holland, Germany and France. Belgian production company EML is supplying lighting, sound - and via E/T/C UK - large format projection.

The show is a fusion of popular and classical music, featuring a 72 piece orchestra and 50-strong choir, conducted by Robert Groslot, plus a series of soloists and special guests. The 2004 Antwerp line up includes Joe Cocker, Shaggy, John Miles and James Brown plus a four-piece 'house' electric band and three backing vocalists.

This year several important production changes were made, the main ones being the introduction of the additional visual component of projection and a new layout for the stage. LD

Starting at London's Brixton Academy the band visit five venues in France and four in Germany before returning to their home city of Glasgow for two nights at the SECC on the 18 and 19 December. Originally only one night was planned for Glasgow but tickets sold-out so fast that a second date was added.

The eye-catching lighting effects created on the exterior of the 25-storey Indosat building are vivid and sharp, even from many miles away, and has set it apart from the rest of its neighbours dotting the skyline.

Indosat is the primary provider of international telecommunication services in Indonesia and is involved in all forms of satellite and communication media. It wanted a facility that truly reflected its technologically advanced nature and drive for innovation not only in the interior environment but also projected on the exterior.

UK - Ed Pagett, the well-known general manager of VLPS Lighting Services which merged with PRG recently, has left the company following an internal reorganization which sees David Keighley of LSD-Fourth Phase take over at the head of the newly-formed PRG Lighting division. It is understood that Pagett left the company in mid-October, although no official statement had been issued by PRG at the time of going to press.

USA - Recent weeks have seen a ground-swell of opinion among LED lighting manufacturers following the granting of US patent 6,788,011 to Boston-based manufacturer, Color Kinetics. The patent appears to give Color Kinetics ownership in the US market of any control of two or more colour-changing LEDs for illumination purposes - something which has caused great concern among lighting professionals.

In a meeting organized by Super Vision International and Artistic Licence (UK) Ltd in October, over 30 lighting manufacturers pledged their support to this group, which calls itself 'The LED Alliance' and is calling upon all interested parties to submit any related prior art on the subject of colour mixing. Specifically, the call is for prior art information dating prior to August 1997 on the following applications:

UK - A demonstration of the latest in LED lighting production technology was given by MCL-NEC on the Suzuki stand at this year's International Motor Cycle and Scooter Show. Held at the NEC, it formed the centrepiece of an integrated sound, lighting and video package provided by the turnkey service company.

Working for production company Big Blue Media Ltd., LD Rob Merrilees designed the stand around MCL-NEC's new inventory of Color Kinetics ColorBlaze 48's and ColorBlast 12's, using 18 of the former and 24 of the latter.

UK - Katie Melua's 2004 UK tour has seen some experimentation that led to permanent changes in what the Georgian-born songstress hears every night from her monitor system.

Russell Sladek has the responsibility for Katie's and the band's stage sound. "On this tour, we have been working with new JBL floor monitors," says Sladek. "The speaker processing that came with the system sounded OK on Katie's monitors, but we tried out an XTA on them and the sound just opened up. It was a night-and-day comparison. "We though it was worth trying and it proved correct. I have used XTAs before and love them. I have done a lot of work with their GQ600 graphic EQ at home in Finland and these are the best."

Italy / China - At the end of September 2004, the HQ of Chinese multinational company 'Neo-Neon' hosted a demonstration of the Butterfly line array system from Italian manufacturer, Outline. The demo was attended by 50 of the country's top rental companies, as well as contractors, dealers, sound engineers and professors of acoustics. The rig installed, which was sold after the demo, consisted in 12 CDH483 high-packs, plus four CDL1815 low-packs and six subs per side and was powered by the company's Series T amplifiers and controlled by Genius 6 processors. The vast area chosen for the demo enabled the team to calibrate the Butterfly setup for even coverage from 20m to 120m, and allowed a listening distance of over 200m. Outline's powerful V.I.P. aiming and simulation software was used.

Screened on prime time TV on BBC 1 and BBC 3, the eight programme series offers practical advice and raises the nation's awareness of the issues of obesity.
