UK - Rock Solid Ethernet is a new book by Artistic Licence managing director, Wayne Howell. Ethernet technology is becoming commonplace in entertainment technology. This means that end users, specifiers, designers and engineers need to know the rules: What can you do? What can't you do? So what can you get away with?Rock Solid Ethernet is split into three sections, discussing the technology from the perspective of end users and specifiers, system installers and manufacturers and designers. Subjects covered range from making an RJ45 cable through network topology to the use of radio links. This book is laid out in a style that allows the reader to quickly find the answers to their questions.

Howell commented: "Over the past few years I have looked for a concise reference on the subject of Ethernet. Somewhat to my surprise I was unable to find what I wanted! There are many go

Greece - Creative Technology London were contracted by Jack Morton Worldwide to provide a turnkey video solution for the spectacular Opening Ceremony of the 2004 Olympics in Athens.

Andrew Hawker, CT's technical director, worked on the project for a year, and was responsible for designing and installing the projection system. Using eight Barco XLM25HD video projectors, images were projected onto eight floating 'rock fragments' during the 'Allegory' section of the opening ceremony, played out to a narrative and soundtrack of Mahler's 3rd Symphony.

'Allegory' was the most technically-challenging part of the ceremony, and took the audience on a journey through landmark periods of Greek history - spanning thousands of years - using sculpture as a metaphor.

When the galaxy of floating rocks surrounding the central feature of a cube rose into the air, the faces of the rock fragmen

UK - DHA Lighting, specialists in entertainment and architectural lighting, will introduce the Derksen Lightbrush colour-mixing architectural washlight system at this year's PLASA Show.

Lightbrush is a modular, colour-mixing system that uses three coloured (red/green/blue), energy-efficient fluorescent tubes to allow the creation of 16.7 million colours. Available in lengths from 636mm up to 1546mm, they are all housed in lightweight, rugged aluminium cases and designed for indoor or outdoor use. Cube and tower configurations are also available. Lightbrush units are controlled by Lightbrush controller modules, which may be programmed using the Lightbrush hand-held remote unit or controlled via the DMX512 lighting protocol.

USA - Originally called 'The Palace', Avalon has some serious history in Hollywood, having played host to everyone from Charlie Chaplin in the 20s to the Beatles, Culture Club, Nirvana and many others. It was made most famous by Jerry Lewis who produced his TV show from the venue for many years. Basically a theatre, it lends itself very well to staging productions, the high ceilings providing a great canvas for a light show, and still has the original hemp pulley system.

As Richie Worboys, who was commissioned to refit the club said: "When I was commissioned I picked ShowCAD Artist for the venue as my experience with it for the last seven years has been fantastic. The software approach makes it the ideal choice for a nightclub installation - not to mention the price and flexibility."

This flexibility extends to allowing users to build their own front-end control surf

Spain - Since its launch, the Aero line array system is rapidly becoming the choice of an increasing number of sound engineers worldwide. The Aero system has seen action in concerts and live events in Korea, El Salvador, Ecuador, Italy, Argentina and the US. Most recently, the stage was in Mongolia, one of the world's most exotic travel destinations.

Mr Orgoin Bayar, owner of the leisure centre 'UB Palace', the largest in the capital of Ulaan Baatar, was impressed with the performance of the Aero systems he had seen at the Frankfurt Pro Light and Sound show. After comparing the D.A.S. system with many others, he decided on acquiring the first line array system in Mongolia, buying 20 x Aero 48 large format line array modules and 12 x Aero-218 Sub low frequency systems. On 10 July the system debuted at the 'Naadam Festival', the largest live event in Mongolia. The outdoor event wa

UK - CP Sound, Staines-based creative lighting and sound specialists, has completed the second stage of an installation at the popular Waxy O'Connor's concept bar in Birmingham.

UK - Beyma will present new models at the PLASA 2004 Trade Fair with its solution for Line Array design as the main innovative product. The new items included in the Beyma 2004 catalogue provide a response to the growing demand for very light and powerful loudspeakers.

The greatest innovation is the WL5, which Beyma launches to the market as the best solution for the high frequency design of Line Array Systems. This model is composed of two components: A specially designed high frequency compression driver, based in the CP-755/ND but in a much more compact size for optimum assembling, with 108dB and 80 W AES, and a simple but effective wave guide which transforms the circular aperture of the compression driver into a rectangular surface, without excessive angle aperture to provide minimum vertical dispersion to the acoustic wavefront. The design fulfills the curvature requiremen

Germany - Introduced at the ProLight+Sound 2004 exhibition in Frankfurt, the Line 212-SP, with integrated active electronics and the new SW 215E and SW215E-SP subwoofers, are now available, say manufacturer Kling & Freitag.

Like the passive version, the Line 212-SP is available as a 65° and a 90° version. One unique feature of the Line 212 Systems is the patented FLC technology which causes a targeted dispersion pattern which already begins in the lower frequency spectrum. If necessary, the horn-loaded extremely compact full-range system Line 212 can be supplemented with additional subwoofers. The new double 15" subwoofer SW 215E, also available as an SP version (self-powered), is especially well-suited for this. Using stacking foot grooves on the top and the side of the SW 215E, the Line 212 systems can be set up for stand-alone or cluster use. Both systems can be opera

UK - Creative Technology has commissioned its first digital portable production unit. Managing director Mark Elliott says that while this is the first to be developed, the company's intention is to build up to half a dozen of the units over the next 12 months. "We are taking our lead from the broadcast world," he stated. "Although our analogue PPUs still work extremely well, the new system will give us greater functionality in a smaller package, and added portability."

After extensive evaluation, CT decided on the Grass Valley Kayak from Thomson as the hub of the new system. The Kayak DD 1ME (mix/effects) digital vision mixer, he says is proving very popular in the rental staging environment in the US. "Although it has the added whistles and bells, the ergonomics will be familiar to traditionalists - it's a very approachable desk."
